Title: Advice on replacing a carburetor? Post by KazamaSmokers on 07/13/20 at 16:27:00 Pipes glowing red. Bike backfires whenever it is shut off. mechanic at the corner believes I need to replace the carburetor. Suzuki carb is very expensive for my teacher budget. Is there a relatively inexpensive aftermarket carb that anyone would recommend? Not looking for extreme performance. Just budget-friendly reliability. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. |

Harley mufflers are a popular replacement muffler and off a bit better sound than the stock muffler - and from behind you can see the interior baffle glowing red. The "pop" or "bang" when you turn the bike off comes from the unburned fuel that gets pumped into the hot exhaust at shut down. When you turn off the ignition you have killed the spark and the fuel/air mixture does not get ignited in the cylinder - but as the engine slows down it is still sucking air through the carb where it picks up fuel.....and then it gets pumped into the hot exhaust - where it is ignited by the hot exhaust system. My bike makes a small "woof" sound now and then - while some bikes can make a shot gun blast! A loud muffler, lean idle mixture and a high idle speed all tend to make the explosion at shut down louder. How does it run the rest of the time? Does it start easy and run smoothly? As others have said - carb replacement is not normally required unless something is broken.......a good cleaning and jet changes can solve most issues. |

Title: Re: Advice on replacing a carburetor? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/13/20 at 20:53:30 Allowing it to run on the sidestand doesn't lube the high end of the cam. Don't do that. If it's idling long enough to get the exhaust red, Don't do that. |

Don't let it sit idling for more than a minute, Start it, get your stuff on, ride it easy till it's fully warm... a couple of miles. The carb is jetted lean from the factory and will actually run better with a main jet a couple of sizes larger. Which should fix the glowing pipe problem too. |
