Title: Ignition key Tank and Steering lock
Post by ELR21Roo on 07/03/20 at 16:22:51

Hello Everyone,

I've have a question I recently purchased an old savage shes been sitting for ages and I only have one key it fits the ignition it also fits in the gas cap but it will not turn.
Question is the ignition and tank key the same and yes I know its a stupid question but which way is the key supposed to turn in the gas cap I do not want to force it nor break the only key I have.

Many thanks in advance
Romano

Romano,
The ignition key is the same as the gas cap key. It turns to the right in the gas cap.

Unless its not the original tank,,
Has it been sitting out?
If so, get some graphite and use a small tip, screwdriver, something, press the shield aside and dump some graphite in and saw the key up and down in there,, ya mite have a pin stuck somewhere,, Dont get horsey with it,, keep sawing and wiggling,, If the tank isnt empty, go ahead and dump whatever is in there in something clear and clean,, see what it looks like,, You might not even actually have a tank,,
If nothing else works, remove it and take it to a locksmith,, Thats not gonna be cheap,, and it mite be for nothing,,
You say
Sitting up a while,,
Any idea how long?
Is the tank the same color as the fenders?

Thanks for the info on the tank, it's better to be safe than sorry.

In answer to the questions the tank is original and was the same faded shade as the fenders (cleaned up great) and has gas inside about half looks like its in good shape. It's been sitting over night with WD40 in the lock I'll give it a go later.

Thanks again guys.

Ya KNooow,, having only one key would be one of the very first problems to solve,,
At least trace it out on some heavy paper,,
But thats not a good situation,,
