Yeah, that was cool.. And I hadda look up
Hot Bulb engine.
Under heavy loads, those engines can heat the Bulb enough to advance the timing to a place not recommended..
Easy solution,, drip water in the intake,,

The guys on the Bison 2000 are tucking in at what appears to be about 10mph...  ;D
I don't think that's doing a lot... :-?

The hot bulb engine was very popular early on, as it was very reliable and spark systems were still in their infancy.  Engines that pumped oil from wells often ran on the waste natural gas from the well, and the gas ignited very easily with the hot bulb (hot tube).

I have a 12HP Hercules engine that has a carb that can run on both gasoline or kerosene.  When running on kerosene the detonation can be a problem under load - so there is a small valve you can adjust to allow some water from the cooling hopper into the intake manifold......it came from the factory that way!

Just sit around and watch the engine run:

Those are some mechanical wonders.

Dave, a friend of mine has an old hit-n-mis. When he has gatherings at his house the woman go up to the kitchen to talk about the men, and the men gather around the hit-n-mis to see who can start it. Once started, we sit around it and drink good beer. It's glorious.
