Title: Harbor freight
Post by LANCER on 05/22/20 at 10:00:52

I now have a local Harbor Freight store.
It beats having to drive an hour to get to one.

Some really good deals but beware , some real crappy tools too. Have one around the corner after years of 20 to 30 miles to get to one. If you use your imagination it's a very resourceful place. If I'm stuck on a project I just wander the store till find what I need or the tools to finish the project.
But beware !

P.S. I hate buying anything from China !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a big box end wrench from them that fits my trailer hitch balls.  The price was right and it is big enough I won't break it.  I find it pretty ironic that on one side it is stamped "PITTSBURGH", and on the other side says "INDIA".

I have had great success painting motorcycle parts with their $14 HVLP spray gun - it could not paint large parts.  Also I bought an electric die grinder and small cut off saw....they work just fine and were worth the price for the occasional use I put them to.  I also have their $299 bike lift and it works fine for light bikes like the Savage...a 600 pound bike on it is a bit scary as it wobbles.  Their boxes of rubber gloves come in several thicknesses and sizes and are a great buy!

I considered buying a sandblast cabinet from them - it was cheap and wobbly and not worth it.

As others have said you just have to pick and choose what you get from them.

The grinder and cut off disks are a waste.
I have several of their angle grinders..
I've got sockets, Allen wrenches, vise grips, the vise grips are obviously Not the highest quality, but they work..
I have a stick welder I've had to work on, others can weld just fine with it, and I have the $100.00 mig.. works fine..
Ya pays your money and ya takes your chances...
I returned Three battery chargers..
I don't take that chance..

Their 20 ton hydraulic press is good. Got mine on sale. Almost everything else I saw there was garbage.

I have purchased a few items from HF with good results:

Deep SAE & Metric 1/2 drive Impact Sets
Dead Blow Hammer

hmmm...that's it

For an occasional use tool (the items above are not), certainly one without moving parts, I would buy from HF. If you follow Project Farm, you can see when compared head-to-head with other brands, HF sell mostly garbage. But I have to say, I use the crap out of those impact sockets, but they also meet the "no moving parts" rule.

I always wondered what people used from there.

I have HF torque wrenches that get very little use and for the price work just fine. I also have some socket sets from HF which to date have held up quite well. And since I always go in with a get something free coupon I have about 30-40 of their screw drivers which actually work quite well. Their pliers suck. I have no experience with their ratchet wrenches, for that a prefer Craftsman.

You do have to pick and choose for sure.
I have a digital caliper, a few hand tools and a couple of power tools, m/c lifts, tire changer (hard to use), and ... hmm.  Oh well.

I do too. I found at Harbor Freight  brake caliper service sets, one made in China and the other made in Taiwan, they looked identical!  :-?

Mad magazine a while back made fun of Harbor Freight.

called  hazard fraught tools.

They included;
Bono safety glasses (look like a rock star),
Laser guided paint brushes,
manual chain saws,
whale gutting knifes,
50 garden hose extension cord combo.
16 ton hydraulic nail unbender.
and who could not live without ,
Muppet grade felt work gloves.  ;D

As many have stated, ya gotta be careful what you get from HF and what you use it on.  Unfortunately, Crapsman has also gone downhill in recent years, too.

I have a set of HF deep impact sockets and 2 different length breaker bars.  That stuff seems good.  I also have a few of their magnetic parts bowls that I use several times a week.  Keep 'em stuck on the outside of my big tool chest.
Definitely bought a few things over the years from them I've thrown out with the rest of the garbage.
I bought this extendable 1/2" drive ratchet that I actually really like: https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-drive-extendable-ratchet-62311.html.  Used it just yesterday to loosen the rear axle nut on the Savage.

Pretty much only buy something with coupons or the 20% coupon you can find just about anywhere.

The free (if you buy something else) , or $5.00 volt/ohm meter is a good deal.  magnetic parts dish is handy too.

Yep.
I really like the dish, no moving parts. [ch128578]
