Title: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by BradleySmith96 on 05/15/20 at 13:13:44

Hello everyone! I just bought a 2002 ls650 and I noticed my horn doesn't work. So I took it apart and tried to follow the circuit but I can't find my horn?  :o haha I'm thinking the guy I bought it from tried to upgrade it, took the old one off and just never finished...
Odd request... but do you guys have pictures of your horns location? Even better can someone walk me through how to put a new one on.
This is indeed an interesting situation, and I appreciate all the help! haha
;D ;D

Look at the photo of the bike in my signature. My tank is re-shaped, but it shows where under or below you should find the horn.

excellent. In that case I have no horn. But I surprisingly have no lose wires. Maybe I'm not following the circuit correctly, but i'd expect very apparently unwired inputs. but nothing. okay... back to the drawing board xD

you wouldn't have a close up of the wiring, would you? :D

Thanks, I was hoping for actual pictures though. Diagrams are great but I was hoping for an actual look, under the hood, so to speak! haha

Perfect opportunity to get a car horn from the junk yard,, and grab the relay, too,, Get one that Needs a relay,, if it doesnt, in my experience,, its not loud enough.. I can literally holler loud enough to get someones attention when the stock horn has failed,,
Find the wires from the button and wire it up.. May hafta pull the tank.
Another fine opportunity
You can change the seat bolts, make them longer and set jam nuts on them,,You can shim the seat front up.
And you can check and add grease to all the connections under there..
Cant remember the name of the stuff,, Okay,, looked on the lube shelf,, Dialectric connection grease,, you can get a little packet at the parrts house for a buck,, I Think the button supplies the ground, and one side of the horn is always hot,

Great suggestion Versey, have not looked at those for a long while.  Its a wealth if really nice photos of virtually everything on the bike.

Goodness. That's exactly what I needed!! Thank you so much!
I feel foolish for not finding it myself :/

That was certainly an invaluable resource!
However none really gave me a good view of the wiring leading up to the horn, and being such a novice when it comes to bike, I was wondering if any of you have any close ups of the horn on your 2002 ls650.

It really doesn't even seem like I have one. I was really getting in there, and without taking the tank off, I really don't know how else to go about this.

This picture shows how the two wires connect to the horn.  Its hard to see, gotta look close.

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by DragBikeMike on 05/16/20 at 16:22:58

This picture shows a close up with the horn removed.  You can see that there is a black/red wire and a black/blue wire.  That agrees with wiring diagrams from 1996 to present.  Earlier models had black/brown & green wires.

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by DragBikeMike on 05/16/20 at 16:28:47

This picture shows the run.  The two horn wires go up into a larger bundle directly from the left hand handlebar switch housing.

Thank you all for all your help!
DragBikeMike, you are a saint!
Your pictures are very helpful, and I can confirm I certainly have no horn xD
Now I just need to locate those wires and just hook one up...
But as far as I can tell there are no loose cables...
I'll send pictures as soon as I can! :D

Pic 3. It almost feels like there are two sets of wires being taped together with electrical tape...

The power for the circuit starts at a connector that has several orange wires to it (orange is common switched power). From the connector it is an orange/black wire that goes to the horn. From the horn there is a green wire that leads to the switch. On the other side of the switch is a black/white stripe that goes to ground. The ground is common with all lights.

I think I'm going to try to take the tank off tomorrow so I can get a better look at the circuit... :/
Can I just take the seat off and scoot it back a little without disconnecting gas and everything (risky ik, but I don't want to mess things up more)

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by Gary_in_NJ on 05/17/20 at 17:58:12

Your gonna have to remove the seat and tank. To remove the tank remove the bolts at the rear, disconnect the fuel line and vacuum line (or if you have a Raptor petcock, turn the fuel to OFF and remove the fuel line) and then slide the tank back a few inches. You can lift it off from there. It's easiest to do with a near empty tank, so go out for a ride first if the tank is full.

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/17/20 at 18:46:16

Have a RAISED location to set the tank down, or youll be layin it on the speedo cable,, It made me uncomfortable

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by BradleySmith96 on 05/17/20 at 19:46:31

I think I'm just going to try to pop the seat off and scoot the tank back just a little without having to disconnect anything so I can get a better look at the lower cable in pic 3. I'm pretty sure my inputs for the horn are wrapped up in that electrical tape for some reason.

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by batman on 05/17/20 at 20:26:31

You may not be able to slide the tank back far enough to even see the  large connector (8-9 pin) above the spark coil ,where the wires originate . You can use a golf tee or small bolt to block fuel flow if you have the stock petcock. you'll have to unplug the small connector to the speedo wires(do this last) and unscrew the speedo drive cable at the right engine case in order to lift the rear of the tank to free the petcock and slide the tank back(be careful not to lose the small O-ring that fits up inside the cable's nut -it tends to fall out and get lost and it needs to be there to act as an oil seal)
When working on the horn or lights never leave the key on for an extended length of time without starting the bike, as it sends power to the TDI ignition and will cause it to be ruined.

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by BradleySmith96 on 05/18/20 at 06:31:26

So I was able to scootch the tank back without having to disconnect everything.
I removed the electrical tape to reveal a blue striped wire and a red striped...  :-? :-?
Pulled up the electrical diagram for an 02 and oh to my surprise, those are the wires for my horn. -___-
Off to autozone to pick up a horn... although... I don't know how to connect them... will I need a soldering tool?? 0.o

Crimp spade connectors,, cheap, easy, done right, they love you long time

Title: Re: Where is my horn??? xD
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/18/20 at 09:13:34

A loud horn uses current to make that noise.
The handle bar switch may not survive , not sure about the wire gauge, so, if you're installing a horn that uses much more current than the stock horn, you should think about those things.

This is going to sound silly... and I should reiterate... I'm very new to repairing things... so... what is a crimp spade connector? Do you have a link? I see a bunch of various ones on amazon, but I'm lost...

Also neither autozone nor my local bike shop had any horns so I'll have to buy one online... found a "universal" one on amazon!
Should this work?

Thanks again for all of your help so far! It really means a lot to be a part of such a cool community!! :D

My thougts was that there is a conector inside the headlamp that fits to the main wirings? If its like that, then its all about two short wires out to the horn to make it work? Second thougt, there is no conector, one only need to conect inside the lamp house and put two short wires to the horn? Im not that perticaly fond of dismantling my head lamp befor I need to. Im such newbie on this bike.

Are you having horn troubles too?
Check out the picks on this thread, as well as electrical diagrams for your year.
For me on the 2002, the cables for the headlamp and horn separate. You can follow the horns cables down the left side of your bike to where the horn should be!

I tried to take really good pics so everyone can follow my process :D hope this all helped!

This is the oem screw according to an ls650 reorder list
02142-0612A

From searching it looks to be a m6-1.0x12mm screw.
Can probably just pick a few up from home depot.

Yes - however the horn isn't grounded until you push the button.  The horn has power to it all the time - the circuit is completed when you push the button and connect the ground (through the switch).

The horn isn't powered all the time , only when the key is in the on position. That's why I warned him about damaging the ignitor TDI.

I wonder I cant see any horn but a lot of tape!
To that, my horn is still conected to my main wiring inside the healamp for som purpose.. probably becuse its better in wet conditions?
In any case its a 12 volt horn, the trouble is to find the right wiring to conect it? In any case I tryed to put some fotageges from my 2000 Savage, they have strap  it a lot but in the end its goes inside  my headlamp anyway. Its a 12 voltage horn, put it anywere you like to have it, find the virings anyhow, that comes frome your handelbar!
