Title: Rust plus aluminium when ignited boils iron.
Post by eau de sauvage on 03/27/20 at 21:47:55

I'm probably the last person to find this out, but it's super impressive.

Just some ground rust, and some ground aluminium add a spark to start it and presto, the rust turns to iron and almost reaches the temperature of boiling iron. Once it starts you cannot stop it, under sand, under water, or in the vacuum of deep space, it will continue till it's done.

You know you want to do it.

Will it work with shaved aluminum , like raking my knife against aluminum block ?    Ground rust should be easy to get .

Neat trick if it works !  :)

I'm guessing a 50/50 mix ?

I'll be mighty impressed if you've already done it!

@MMRanch,

From what I've seen of it, it appears that they both need to be powdered 50/50 and mixed with some sort of binder to hold it together. You start with Iron oxide and aluminium and you end up with Iron and Aluminium oxide.

The Aluminium just rips the oxygen off the rust. It's called a thermite reaction and there is apparently a lot of different metals that are used but the Al and Fe oxide appear to be the fiercest.

@IR, not yet but I'm working on it, there's a lot of videos of it on youtube. For railways, they leave about an inch of space between the pieces that need to be joined, heat it all up, then light the touch fuse. The slag floats to the top and the molten iron pours out and the slag overflows.

That must be like those "Fire Starters"  you shave off some of the  block then throw a spark into it.
........................

But :   What if you shaved the WHOLE BLOCK !   :-?

I've seen those blocks that you can shoot to explode them , how/what are they ?

That's tannerite.
Look up tannerite hog hunting..
It's a blast.

@JoG, it's not tannerite, which is explosive. This stuff just gets hot. Like about 4,500F, iron melts at 2,700F

@MMRanch, that would be a block of magnesium.

Yeah, its Tannerite that commonly seen that upon being shot, they blow up..

And I so often dont follow you, and force an explanation that sjhouldnt be needed,,

What did you mean by this?  Why would this thread annoy anyone?

I remember seeing a film of this rail welding technique when I was at high school a few years ago. I think magnesium did have a part to play in it.

"Look at where I replied.."

I did.  Obviously I do not understand or I would not continue to ask.

 You posted the statement:

"Now i know how badly I irritate Eegore."

I replied at that time, but I do not know why you would have said anything about this annoying me.  I didn't read, or comment on this thread except to ask you why you think this annoys me.

 Why did you type that?

Remember how I've caused you to explain what really wouldn't Need an explanation
If I just trusted the words.

I think I know, I was under the impression that I expressed some sort of annoyance with this topic.

@JoG,

Matey, I just mentioned the thermite reaction which is not explosive, it's just ripping electrons of one element and putting them on another. There are various metallic combos that do this, however the rust plus Al is the fiercest,  so fierce that it not only melts iron but it almost boils iron.

I just posted it here in the cafe, I thought it was interesting. You called it Tannerite, which appears to be an explosive reaction that uses various oxidisers.

How the fcuk can you, or why would you even want to turn this into an argument FFS.

What is interesting about the thermite reaction is it's just rust and Al, and is not explosive it's an exothermic reaction par excellence. Then you inexplicably bring in Eegore, because I politely pointed out the difference. Why do you do this. What the fcuk is wrong with you.

No

I DIDN'T CALL IT TANNERITE,,

Read the post above my post where you, because you are unable to grasp what I said, you BELIEVE I'm so stupid that I don't know the difference between a really hot reaction and an explosive.

Try reading the OTHER people s posts, instead of looking at mine trying to prove me wrong..
Aren't you tired of me rubbing your nose in , well, you?

JoG,

OK I get it now, because you did not indicate who you replied to and because you use such belligerent language for no reason, I thought it was a reply to me.

Any normal human being would have said, "that reply was for MMR. And we're done.

But not The JoG, that would be too normal, instead you write "Now i know how badly I irritate Eegore."

Glad it's all sorted. Why isn't there an ignore button on this forum.

Here,i figured you had to have realized I was replying to MM,,because you corrected me..

And, How LONG AGO was all this and you needed to drag it out yesterday?
Well, I'm glad we got it all aired out.
Maybe we will better understand each other now.
