Title: Guzzi Diag
Post by MMRanch on 03/25/20 at 19:56:54

It happened again .    My check engine light came on .   The start button not only starts the Guzzi , but if ya hold it down (w/motor running) then it turns on and off the traction control .
Yea , Don't that make ya want to buy a Newer Motorcycle ?   The Anti-Lock Brake System is another thing ...

Well the Start button hung in the compressed position today .   After a while the Traction Control OFF light came on , shortly followed by the Check Engine Light.

Once before the Check Engine came on.   I took it to the dealer since its got about 1 year left on the factory warranty.   Well , turns out ... I had to agree to pay for the diagnosis if it wasn't a factory mistake.   So it cost me $124.87 for them to tell me I needed a new Battery !   :-[   Then they wanted $149.00 for the same battery walmart sells for $59.99.

Right , I got a walmart battery and then bought a OBDII conector...  It can hook to my computer or an Android Phone.

I  hooked it to my computer today .    It took about an hour to figure out what to do .   Next time it will take about two minutes !   ;)

So , don't be afraid to buy a new bike ... If I can do it then Anybody can !
 :-/

I think I'll keep my S-40 for back-up and sometimes I wonder "Why I wanted anything else" ...

My LS650 has full-time traction control.  No fancy button or electronics required.   ;)

What ? if the battery is dead the start button will retract ??? WTF ? These Italian fools have an unhealthy fascination with that start button being repurposed. Most of us are terrified of touching it when the bike is running cos that a good way to destroy the starter and related crap.
To make it even better … much much better in fact, the BMW's have 2 turn signal buttons one for each thumb and one to cancel … 3 buttons where we get by with 1 and brilliantly, they repurpose the start button to show some info panel type crap.

Cool.

Yea , Don't worry , The on board computer has it all under control !    ::)
Its not just the  Italian , the whole world has gone mad.
So , What newer bike don't have a "Check Engine Light" ?
............................................

I was around when "BASIC" computer language was.    There was a command called "IF - THEN" it is a very powerful command.   "IF" - V1>1 (motor running and drawing vacuum-as told by the MAF)  "THEN" - "GO-TO" (another command) Traction Control or (LINE ...)

now that everything is written in machine code I can't read anything !  :-[

I think I've found the stupidest smart bike of all time - Yamaha bolt. That sucker likely is the dumbest thing ever.
BTW what kind of Guzzi That California behemoth ? Or Breva types.
Cool.

I am not sure when they switched over - but BMW now has the more common turn signal switch.......just one L/R button on the left side like most bikes.

The headlight H/L switch is a bit different.  Instead of a rocker switch, it has a small lever on the front of the left handlebar control.  You operate it with your index finger.  You pull it back to the "click" for low beam, pull it back farther for the Passing Light that flashes the high beam.....and you use the side of your index finger to push it forward for the high beam.  It is really quite nice once you get used to it.

Doesn't Harley use a left and a right button for turn signals?

Both of my BMW's have the little "SERVICE" light on.  The dealer sets it up so the light comes on after a 1 year or 2,000 mile interval - it is supposed to remind you to bring it in for service.  You need to have a computer program to reset the light - the dealer will do it at the time of service.  If you have $400 you can buy a tool to reset it, and up to 10 other bikes as the tool recognizes the serial number of the bike and records it........once you reach 10 you can keep resetting those bikes - but no others.

I looked over my Guzzi Eldorado and cannot find my Obd port.
Somehow some nit wit at the factory must have left it off along with the abs and traction control.
What were they thinking back in 1972!  >:(

I’ve looked and looked and I can’t find THAT bolt anywhere on that machine.
I think they deliberately hid it deep inside just so they could watch people looking for it.
Some of ‘me do that.  Yea they do. [ch129488]

They must have bought the switch from the same place MG bought theirs.
.....................................

The Yamaha make me think of the three Yamaha bikes I've had.   All three had "Brush" type alternators .   They all three suffered the same fate too.   As soon as the battery got low then the ROTOR MAGNET  burned themselves up trying to charge the low battery.
Well , guess how much a new rotor cost ????    If you guessed about as much as a good used bike then you would be right .   :-?

I actually put a Honda permanent magnet in one of them .   It was a RD250 .   A little machining and that baby slipped right in there.
But
I could only run the headlight about 1/2 the time , but it worked ... If we had LED's back then it would have been just fine !  ;)

Not many big ones - but most of the bolt seems to be made super clunky like a commie era utilitarian bike.
The horn isn't the first button by your left thumb, its 1" over. Plenty of times I've mashed the plastic and made no noise.
The air filter is squarely going to hit you in the knee no matter which version of the bolt you are on.
The intake manifold makes that hard turn making the bike impossible to tune past the K&N and remap.
The ECU needs a remap, the power commander crap etc does very little, its not easy to do either.
The FI crap is run with o2 sensor in open loop past 1/8th throttle.
The café has the seat at the wrong angle and that retarded fender - mandated by DOT I'm sure doesn't add to the café look.

Belt drive is awesome, my SCR has spoked aluminum 17" rear wheels and will accept the cast bolt wheels.
The accessory seat is thick and will rival many aftermarket ones.
C spec bars are narrow and super cool, the SCR wide wide wide bars are awesome too.
All round positives outweigh the negatives.

Cool.
Srinath.

Thank you Srinath, I looked at the Bolt as its engine size would give a little more power for overtaking, the one thing I think our S40's lack. I have sat on a Bolt and I agree about the air filter box hitting your knee, I also feel the Bolt conception dosen't suit digital instrumentation, but that's just a personal thing. I've also heard of the alleged problems with the alternator. The ECU and other engine mapping issues are beyond me technically. Thanks for the info on the horn button. The Bolt can only be had to special order in my country, some second hand ones around, but it's very unlikely I would buy.

Bolt with C spec handlebars and SCR spec rear wheel will easily make 120 mph and rip between 75 and 105 like no tomorrow. It actually reminds me of my eliminator 1000 a lot in most situations, except the eli used to easily run 125+ indicated.
Anyway think 48 hp and only about 40lb heavier than a stock savage once you finish all the weight reductions on the bolt (muffler and bracket is all I took off).
It will run rings around a savage, it just is woefully poor for a modern 1000. Its fine for a twin cruiser, but I'd say its still poor cos its only 48hp mathematically.
SCR bars, I made 109, C spec 119mph. Air drag is huge at that speed.
Cool.
Srinath.

Took a 125 mile ride on the bolt today. You remember how in the 90's the bike with the best roll on's was a Bandit 1200. Torque torque torque right. The Bolt is the same way. But its a bit of a porker. It hauls but that weight is definitely keeping it slower. The sad thing is, you cant even lighten it without getting stupid $$$ into it. But ofcourse a savage is the easiest to drop weight especially as a % of its initial weight. Its almost like it starts out as Giselle Bundchen and turns into Kate Moss with no effort. Just unbolt and toss. Once you do that, it actually becomes a better bargain for you to lose weight than make it lose weight.

Cool.
Srinath.

Thanks srinath, but at the risk of boring you I wasn't riding between 1980 and 2007. I had two accidents in a row in '79 '80 and that put me off. I was on a 350 Jawa, which in ts own way was a good bike, so I've no idea of '80's and nineties bikes. When I came back in 2007, I brought a GN 250 and that whetted the appetite for something a little larger, saw the candy coloured S40, it weas within my means, subsequently saw the pearl white and silver one and schemed to get it. Obviously you have ridden far more miles and bikes than I have and your assement of the Bolt actually isn't that harsh. However, it will probably stay a sort of dream in my mind. The S40 stands strong.
