Post by Jody72 on 03/24/20 at 12:41:54

So how many people would be interested in buying a set of forward controls?  Thinking about making some.

I'll want to look at em - but maybe - a definite maybe - and Moses lake - I know where that is, and I might have even ridden through there - I lived in Spokane and rode a nighthawk and a Suzuki katana all over the place back in the day - I also believe I first saw the milky way when I was there - the night I bought a virago 535 in 94 fall. Beautiful place.

Cool.

Work the shipping estimate on Brisbane /Australia.
When you have a pic of the controls let me know as I would obviously like to see the whole setup before purchase etc. I totally understand you are at the start of the process so it will take some time, good luck with the endeavour.

So I got them on. It feels like a whole new bike with my legs out front. I’m having one of the pieces redone and I hope to be able to start shipping kits out around the 5/18/2020. I have more photos on Facebook Ramz’s 4” Forward controls.

Well guys I've been quietly following this thread and am glad that Jody has stepped up and is carrying the torch forward with my design. He has my blessing in this endeavor and I wish him all the luck with this.
I'm a bit embarrassed because I left the Savage community out in the cold when I stopped making the forward control kits.
Needless to say from the picture of the kits Jody is producing I can tell he got it right. He even improved the brake extension over my design.
 Ride safe everybody

Cost is $150 that includes shipping in the USA. I will be doing international shipping soon that adds around $70 to the cost.

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls
Post by IslandRoad on 05/22/20 at 18:12:19

I just wanted to add a bit of feedback on the forward controls FWIW  8-). I installed a set of Ed's forward controls and loved them. They changed the ride in a positive way and I felt they made the bike look more 'substantial'. (However, in the long run, they were a little too extended for my short legs And I'm now working on making a 2.5 - 3.0 inch set for myself)

Anyhoo, two points:

1. They come up great when polished to a 600 grit finish and a good rub with Autosol. I tried clear-coat, but cleaned it off as they hold up just fine raw.

2. I trimmed off a lot of the 'excess' aluminium around the bolt holes. While the plates were installed on the bike I simply drew horizontal lines across them, top and bottom, and used a Dremel tool to grind the plates. I also trimmed the leading edges back to the edge of the stock hardware. I reckon they looked great like that. I ran them like that for a few months with no signs of stress. Unfortunately the photos I took are on an old phone that is now out of service.

I still have the plates so I'll take photos and upload for anyone interested to see them. I've begun to make digital templates (with the horizontal top and bottom, they can simply be stretched horizontally for different sizes) so if that comes together I'll share those too.

BTW, as Ed pointed out, your version of the brake cable extender looks great!

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls
Post by IslandRoad on 05/22/20 at 18:14:24

BTW again, I'm also glad that Ed's project has been taken up again (with his blessing  ;D). I think these are a great contribution to the Savage community and would love to see them develop even further.

I have experience working in vector formats, so if I can lend any assistance just shout out.

Ed:

Anybody that has tried to make and sell a product in their spare time will understand that it eventually can wear you out.  Nobody makes more than just a bit of money on these things - especially when you start to add in the time spend gathering up raw parts, building kits, assembling everything, doing the marketing and communication with buyers, boxing things up, trips to the post office, etc.  This is especially true when very often you only sell a kit every month or two.

Eventually all the time spent in the workshop working on parts for other peoples bikes can wear you out.....and take away all your spare riding time!

Thank you for providing this service during your reign........and for being gracious about the next builder carrying on!

I’m planning on taking a trip from Moses Lake wa. to around Trail, British columbia Canada. If you want you can reserve your self a set of forward controls now and pay for them before I leave and meet me up there. I don’t know when I will be going up there do to the Covid 19 crap the latest would be middle of September. So shipping is normally about $52 but if I ride up I will not be charging that might be only $5.

This kit is designed to move the OEM forward not get rid of them but you could probable fine something and change it.

Post by ohiomoto on 08/10/20 at 18:48:01

Nice!

As someone who fabricated mid-controls, I think this kit is a great deal.  Sure, you could probably save a few bucks by making your own.  But you'll waste time and money finding the supplies and tools, and by the time you are done you'll end up spending almost as much.

Do you have them premade or are you taking orders?  Do they come with any kind of instructions.  I am sure I could figure it out, but its nice to have a plan B.  How do you handle orders and payments?

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls

I have them premade most of the time I do have a part I need to make right now.
you ask for it I will let you know if I have one then you pay and I ship it. lower USA shipping is included in price
for payments I take venom or PayPal
yes I do send instructions with them. I do change them when I get feed back to add or change something

Good Evening, Jody72!

I am very interested in your forward controls.  Are they very easy to install?  I am not a mechanic.  Do you have a video showing the installation?  Do you have a website?  Do they offer adjustments for the forwarded distance?  How much is the cost, right now?  I live at Colorado Springs, CO (zip code 80921)  How do I make the payment, and how long does it take to arrive?  You can send me a PM.

Cordially,

MichaelT

there not to bad i do send instructions with them. i do not have a video yet but you can message me on Facebook with any questions. no website but i do have a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Ramzs4inforwardcontrols/. no adjustment. cost is $160 that includes shipping to Colorado. i take payments through Paypal. i send them Priority mail so about 3-4 working day that's what USPS tells me  ;D . you can email me as well Ramseyjl@hotmail.com. i will PM you but because you have less then 10 post you won't be able to PM me back.

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls

I know that your controls are 4" forwards, but would you be willing to go 6"? I understand if you are not interested.  I am sure you are set up to do the 4" pretty painlessly and getting into custom requests could get to be a nightmare.  Just thought I would ask though. If so, any idea on cost?

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls
Post by Jody72 on 08/22/20 at 03:21:44

I don’t have to much interest in 6” which is why I stuck with 4”. I have talk with someone else that has a 6” set  I might be able to get or see if they are making them. Cost for a 6” set probably would be about $160-170. It’s the start up cost that suck for me. If there were at lest 5 people interested then I think I could start making that size as well.

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls
Post by EZPZ on 09/12/20 at 11:42:10

I am interested, but have a question...
I am 5'10" and made a solo seat on my 08.  But I made the solo to fit right down on the frame and follow the contours.  I left the bends on the frame so that I could install the factory seat back on.  For an idea, its like taking the factory seat off and just sitting on the frame.  When I sit on the bike and put my feet out to where I think it is comfortable, I am resting my heels on top of the brake/gear shift which is right at 4".  But I could still stretch out a little more comfortably.  So I don't know if I would be happy with 4" forwards but didn't know if 6" would be too far forward. I see the 5" option and am thinking this would be a good compromise.

Any advise or insight from anyone?

Maybe I should move this to its own topic.  I don't want to highjack this post, but input here could influence someone's response to Jody's request.

Title: Re: Jody's Forward Controls
Post by Jody72 on 09/24/20 at 21:12:07

right now all i make is the 4" size. if I had 5 people that would commit to buying a 5" set then i would make them.

I'm 6'2" and have the 4" on mine. probably could go more myself but 4" is way better the then none ;) . it made it so much nicer for me to shift.

basically broke my big toe 3 years ago when a dog ran out and i hit it. i was lucky i did not go down but it bent my gear shifter into a shoe horse shape so shift the rest of that day was back ass words.

if you have a 4" and want to go bigger I'm thinking i might do trades of some parts.

what are your thoughts?

So my machinist is going to cut out a sample of a 6”plates and I’m sure they will be fine. So I need 3 to 4 patient people that would like a 6” set to make a purchase right now at only $160 ( they will be $170 or more later).  I should be able to get you your set before December. After I get the plates I have to get some other parts but I won’t know how long I need tell I get the plates on. Please share this post to past the word around. Ramseyjl@hotmail.com

I might be willing to give the the 6" plates a try. I'm 6'2 and for the most part im okay with the current stock set up but i am curious on having more room to spread out. How did the change from stock  to --> 4'' forward feel?

I really like it. I did 350 mile trip with it. It was enjoyable but made me think would 6” be better. So I have one other person that want 6” so I’m getting some plates cut out. When I get them then I will put them on and see how long I need to make my other pieces.

slack would be coming from another place other then the shifting rod. it main job is connect the foot pedal to the arm on the gear shaft.  i could be wrong

For what its worth...I ordered a set of 6" a while back and they are AWESOME!!!  I am 5'10' and love the fit.  Installation was pretty straight forward and looks are great.  No problems with them at all.  GREAT product as far as I am concerned and recommend anyone to give them a try.

Greetings Jody,

I am 5’11” and I think I could deal with 4” or 6”, whichever you have available. Please let me know how quickly you can get some shipping, I will pay expedited/overnight if you have some on the shelf, going on a long trip next week and these would add much more comfort.

I don’t think I have posted/done enough to receive PMs here, but if you have Venmo we can discuss there.

Thank you!
Erik
