Title: Custom Savage  vs sr400/500
Post by Marcus2116 on 03/23/20 at 19:53:57

I see a lot of sr400's and 500's done in Japan and Thailand. Why don't we see more savage's done bobber or cafe style?  Both are singles and fun bikes. There were 400's available in both countries so I don't think it was a cc restriction.
I think these are easier to build than the Yamaha's but not
more are featured.

I put some cool ones that I have found does anyone have others?

The SR500 was an outstanding standard. Being a standard it lends itself to an easy conversion to a cafe racer. The SR400 shares the same frame configuration, but unfortunately it doesn’t share the pizazz of the 500.

The Savage can be converted to a cafe racer, but it takes a bit of effort, certainly extra effort than a standard. It’s easily converted to a bobber.

I see a lot of bobber and cafe conversations of the Savage. A quick look in the custom build section shows many examples of both. There are hundreds of RYCA cafe racer conversions, check out the rycamotors website for some incredible bikes.

My good friend raced an SR500, which I did stupid amounts of work on. Good news is that the motor can produce much more power than a Savage. At 560cc with a lot of cool parts, we had 52 HP at the rear wheel. And there are 600cc kits out there.
Bad news is that its a non-counterbalanced single. Shakes like hell. Prob why the frame is more butch. And it's a dry sump motor, so more plumbing. also, kick start only, which gets old with a kick only high compression single.

The SR starts out much heavier than the Savage, and I doubt you could get one down to 300 lbs like a heavily breathed on Savage.
But the wheels are more normal size and the chassis geometry is basically Standard, so you can make a cafe racer a bit easier.
Chose the Savage for the weight, counterbalancer, E-start, and the belt drive. Target HP is 40, well shy of the 52 we had on our SR. In the end, smooth and light was more important to me.

You're killing me - that's a $1300 aluminum tank isn't it ?
How does it clear the forks at lock.
Cool.
Srinath.

Really good looking bike Armen, I have the same tank except in steel, (I  would rather have the riverside tank instead of the Mojave)

Do you have a problem with the gas cap over venting? If I park it in the shop or on hot days I can really smell gas.

Oh by the way great mirrors, mine came with some useless bar ends,  I upgrade to the emgos.

Thanks for the compliments. Had to raise the tank about 4" to look right with the seat. Gave it to a bud to cut out the bottom and weld a new floor in it. Hopefully soon.
Only prob is it's somewhere I can get to with the whole virus thing going on.
Have to work on the other toys for now.
Stay healthy guys!

Whenever I see polished aluminum bodywork I think of old fighter planes.
Where motorcycles and aviation cross paths , very cool !

Hi Armen,

The bike looks great, nice and unique!!  I was looking to see others that didn't only incorporate the ryca mods. Sr's have a lot of aftermarket support while the savage seems to be very limited.

52hp is wild on such a light bike. Must have been a fun ride!!

I have a 07 standard sportster and with the amount of aftermarket parts available it was easy to do a cafe with not much fab required. I also am currently working on an xr that is a lot of fun too but I have to pretty much make my own stuff to fit it.  I put a couple pictures below

Hey Marcus,
Both bikes look like a  ton of fun!
The SR was fast enough to win the SOS Senior class in AHRMA in '93. Good times :-)
