Hi, I just installed some saddlebags and the rectifier was in the way, so I unscrewed it and moved it a little further down the rear fender to where it was just between the two frame tubes that join onto the fender. I don't really want to move it anywhere else. I haven't screwed it down or anything but I could drill some new holes if I had to, although I'd rather not. My question is, is it safe where it is? It makes contact with the rear fender but is not totally flat against it as it was in its original position. Is it safe not screwed down? Is it safe lower on the fender where it doesn't sit flat? Any advice is much appreciated.

Velcro tape. It may need to be grounded too. But maybe not. But I would add a ground wire anyways. The advantage of bolting it down it will dissipate heat better but if it gets hot you got other problems.

Thats a coincidence, I was wondering exactly the same thing about the rectifier placement.

The previous owner of my bike used saddle bags too ( that i now have ) and the broad strap completely covered the rectifer,,,and then of course the seat on top of the whole lot.

I noted the rectfier is deeply finned to presumably dissipate heat and wondered too if i should move it or is it ok being closely covered? The previous owner had no issues but the bikes only covered 3000km. Any thoughts?

The reg/rec handles the alternator 's output which exceeds what the bike uses, the excess is used to recharge the battery and then is shed through the body and fins as heat . I would move it to a place where air flow over the fin s is not restricted , and it should be grounded to a metal surface either by bolting or use of a ground wire to complete that circuit . ( the body being of a cast metal resists electric flow thus turning it to heat , the fins having more surface area sheds the heat ,not unlike the fins on the motor head and cylinder, but there's no path of flow if the body isn't grounded.)

Does it necesarrily have to be bolted to a flat surface like that ugly flat spot on the rear fender? Or is moving it up to further down the fender and bolting it to the round part even though it's not perfectly flat ok? I imagine it will still be getting air since it's still in the path of air to the air box, or am i mistaken?

Mine's been screwed to the plastic air-box for 10 years and it's fine.
If AZ heat don't kill it, nuttin' will.

I put mine in the airbox, loose not screwed to anything, worked fine. It is better off where there is airflow than where it was originally mounted.

why not bolt it on one end to the fender . and use a small shim and longer bolt where it curves away from the fender? that way it's mounted solidly and grounded.

I didnt use a shim or a longer bolt, but it seemed solid enough to me. Do you recon it's okay without a shim? Where would I find a shim the right size?

Anywhere you want to. tightly rolled/folded aluminum foil would work.
