Title: Can this Cylinder be re-used?
Post by wordet11 on 01/23/20 at 11:46:11

Hey guys. I have blown up engine (cam chain tensioner failure) that I got with a parts bike a couple years ago. Finally tore into it last night. Everything is pretty trashed. However, I'm wondering if the cylinder could be bored and re-used, or is the scarring from the bits of the valves too much. I'll post pictures when I can. Anyone else ever done this?

I am not sure we are going to be able to tell much from a photo.'

The largest piston you can get it 97mm.....which will take 1.5mm from the diameter of the stock piston.  If the pits are less than 1.5mm deep.....the damage could be removed by boring.

If there are really deep gouges.....there is potential for the cast iron liner to have been cracked.

Thanks Dave. I think that a 97mm bore would fix it. But I don't want to spend the money on the machine shop, only to find out that they are too deep. I'll have to get an opinion from my local shop.

I ask questions like that in the machine shop that does the engine work for the bike shops. Call a few bike dealers and ask where they take cylinders and heads.
You sure that's gonna fix it?
Didn't gurr up any gears or shifting parts?
Generally, chain tensioner puking its guts kills it..

Just take it in to the machinists and let them have a look and see what they say is needed.
Nothing more than a 97mm bore.
