Title: Speedo light goes out frequently
Post by WunGun on 01/15/20 at 12:26:44

Is there a particular trick to keep this from happening? Each light only lasts several months before burning out again.

I would have to guess that you didn't install a 12v light.
The other option is that it's seeing a lot of vibration or shock.

If it's voltage, you can add a resister, but it will be dimmer.

Be careful to use the 3watt bulb not the 1.7watt,  used only for the high beam.

Not sure why you are going through lights, as that is not normal.

Failing to find a cure - you might consider installing LED replacements......maybe they will last longer.

You can buy LED replacements from SuperBright LED's.  They have a selection of different bulbs, and you could even change the color!

Wun Gun , Do you ever blow a fuse when the speedo light goes out?

No never a fuse blown. I have the same problem with my aftermarket tach on my sportster using the same bulbs. Im using 74's so maybe the bulb is the wrong wattage since my bike doesn't seem to vibrate more than a standard savage.

I looked into LED's and may try it although I actually like the warm dim look of the standard lights vs the stark white of LED but I'd rather have any light than none.

It seems funny to me that the wiring harness to the speedo that runs to the bulbs ,part 11-34170-24b20 hasn't changed since 1986 , strange that the 86 wiring diagram in Clymer's shows two speedo lights (maybe another mistake) and in 87 to present the kick stand warning light was dropped ,but the socket for the light bulb still remains.  Is it empty? Is it subject to corrosion?  Does the fact that these lights all share a common ground have anything to do with your bulbs burning out????? I don't know , but it wouldn't hurt to cut the wires running to the unused socket in any case .( I'd leave the socket in place to prevent moisture findings it's way inside the speedo)

IIRC the plug you refer to for the kickstand light is empty with a plug in place or simply no hole was drilled. I was going to use it as an accessory power light.

What about the wiring harness, do you remember if the two wires that went to that light removed?

I'll check when I pop the tank off to replace the bulb. The 74's I was using were 14v so I purchased 73's which are 12v. Hopefully this fixes it.

!4 v means extra heat and your running them inside a sealed chamber , on the Savage , no other bulb runs continually ,except the high beam and that bulb's wattage isn't 3w but a mere 1.7 w over 43% less heat, and probably for that reason.  the 14v bulb run as brightly as it's designed to because the bike's alternator produces that level of power from the voltage regulator ,it has to produce a higher voltage than 12 to recharge the battery .
