Title: Delete compression release?
Post by Armen on 11/28/19 at 08:42:10

Anyone running their bike without a compression release? Does this murder the starter?
thanks
Armen

Armen,
I think Dave has done that.

I have that RYCA thumb lever , but have never needed it. Starter doesn't seem to be labored or struggling on cold or hot starts , but it's there if I ever need it.

I don't think it would be good to try it on a bike that didn't have the anti-kickback gear in the starter gear train ,that might be tempting fate.

What years of the LS650 have a compression release?  The last bike I owned that had a compression release in synch with the starter was my 1972 Yamaha XS650 ????

I’ve deleted the solenoid on beast. You’ll only need it if your battery is weak. I put on Rycas lever

With the stock piston......you likely can get by without the compression release if you don't try to start the bike in frigid weather.  With really cold oil and a really cold battery - it might be the reason Suzuki put it on.

With the Wiseco, I don't need my compression release 99 out of 100 starts.  The only time you need it is when the engine stopped with the piston at the bottom of the compression stroke - the starter cannot push the piston up against the compression without some inertia from rotating parts.

I have a BMX lever on the handlebar that runs the compression release by way of a cable.

A compression release cable would be the perfect thing to install in one hole of the triple clamp in a custom build, should be like a choke plunger and it can even go back in by itself, not stay open.
Then obviously the other hole has the ignition switch. Its almost like they put these there at the factory, I mean your savage didn't come that way ??? Its like turn the key, pull that plunger, pull in clutch and hit start.

Cool.
Srinath.

Thanks for the hints.
Yes, all Savages had a solenoid operated compression release.
RYCA is out of stock on their lever, so I'll make one.
Stock piston for now, def fab a lever when I do the high compression 695.
Because I've deleted the faux chrome covers, not much in the way of putting a lever right there.
Of course, on the past puttering session, I found I was missing a few minor parts again. So, three tiny parts orders in three weeks where the shipping is almost as much as the parts :-0
While I'm waiting on parts, I'm figuring out seat and tank mounts. Woof

And, I've upgraded the starter gear train to the anti-kickback one.

Do you mean that all LS650s, from 1986 to 2019, have come with a compression release?

Cat,
Yes, AFAIK

The LS400 did not have a compression release - but all 650's do.  The LS400 never came to the USA.

Thanks Boss!   :)

Sometimes when people use the model name "Savage" I think they are referring to LS650s up until the name change to "S40 Boulevard".

If you go online for parts you should be looking for the LS650P / S40

WHO thought "Boulevard" was a good idea?   They might as well have called it "Maynard".... or "Civilized".

It is a stupid name.  Savage or LS650 was fine with me.  I guess the LS650 had to conform to the Boulevard name like the rest of the cruiser line.  Meh.

I  think Suzuki must have hired the guy that named the Hodaka models. Hodaka had the Road Toad, Dirt Squirt, Super Rat, Wombat, and Combat Wombat in their lineup.
Suzuki joined in the game with the Gaucho, Colt, Duster, Apache, Savage, Rover, Intruder, and VanVan model names.

I was a at a classic bike event, here in Australia, a couple of years ago and I saw a couple of Combat Wombats (I think they were flat-trackers). I assumed they were some kind of team theme. I had no idea they were actually a brand!  ;D

Hodaka made bikes for 14 years. How they ever sold them with names like that is baffling. Road Toad does not conjure up images of outstanding performance or handling, and Dirt Squirt sounds like what happens to you when you drink the water south of the border. :)

Then along comes Suzuki with the Intruder and Savage that sound like the names of bedroom toys. ::)

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by batman on 12/01/19 at 10:16:01

I don't see why the compression release couldn't be removed in any case. If the battery is in good shape ,and the piston stalled as it was coming up on the compression stroke , you could simply turn the key off , place the bike in gear , pull the clutch in, and push the bike forward a foot or two, pop the clutch forcing the piston past TDC , and restart the bike in the normal fashion.

Batman
I was going to cheat and buy the Ryca one, but they are sold out. It's a simple piece of metal with a hole in it.
Found a piece of aluminum angle that should be a good starting point.
No biggie.
It'll be interesting to see if the release is needed.
Prob once the bike becomes a high compression 695, it'll be a different story.

If the solenoid is removed what must be done with wires to cancel out current there while starting ?

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by verslagen1 on 12/01/19 at 11:27:53

You don't have to do anything, but you'll get a more reliable machine if you also delete the decomp controler... little black box above the carb.

While rare, this box can fail causing the starter to engage and launch your bike into the wall.

Pull the controller and jump the wire from the starter button to the starter relay with a short bit of wire and 2 spade connectors.

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by batman on 12/01/19 at 11:54:43

Armen ,Can I assume you have the clutch switch bypassed?

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by Armen on 12/01/19 at 12:54:06

I got this bike in boxes and crates. Doing the Motogadget M-Unit thing. The only original wires are from the alternator/ignition trigger to the ignition box and reg/rect. And from the ignition box to the coil. Pretty much everything else has been removed or replaced.
All anti-stupid switches have been tossed.

Post by batman on 12/03/19 at 11:26:49

There's really only one disadvantage to the Ryca thumb lever,  that it requires the bike to be in neutral so you can use both hands, a bit inconvenient if the bike stalled in traffic, but hardly the end of the world, but Dave's cable release on the bar  eliminates that problem .

Hey, those are the bikes of my youth. I'm guilty of having owned:

'75 Hodaka 100 Dirt Squirt
'73 Suzuki TS50 Gaucho
'74 Suzuki TS125 Duster
'75 Suzuki TS185 Sierra
'76 Suzuki TS400 Apache

All great bikes. I owned all at the right time/age but the TS400. I was only 16 and it was way too much bike for me. Don't get me started on the TM's (TM125 Challenger, TM250 Champion & TM400 Cyclone) we had. Sadly Suzuki dropped the funny names with the RM's.

My dad was a long time friend of the guy that bought up all the orphaned bikes and parts when Hodaka went out of business.

I only had the Hodaka for a few months. It (or I) seemed to crack the frame every few weeks. It was a real light-duty machine. But a hella fun to ride.

How does this auto decompressor work?
Does it have a timer that cuts it out after the initial few seconds to allow the engine to fire?

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by Fast 650 on 12/07/19 at 14:18:04

Yes, it is only active for something around 200 milliseconds then drops out.

Title: Re: Delete compression release?
Post by norm92de on 12/07/19 at 17:17:06

I believe it is activated for 700 milliseconds. Just enough to get the motor spinning.

If you look at the CS1 build video(s) - one of them has the wiring modifications to eliminate the decompression release controller.
