Title: Go Greta!
Post by T And T Garage on 11/08/19 at 14:49:31

“Change is coming whether you like it or not.”

Love this girl!!

Speaking at a rally in Charlotte, N.C., Friday, Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg shut down a heckler who tried to interrupt her speech.

“I think if you want to speak with me personally, maybe you can do it later,” Thunberg said before the crowd erupted, chanting her first name.

The 16-year-old, who has been traveling around North America to raise awareness about climate change, was imploring fellow youth leaders to speak out in the fight against global warming when she paused as someone near the stage tried to speak over her.

“It can be hard in times like these to find hope, I can tell you,” Thunberg said before the interruption. “And I can tell you I have not found much hope in politicians and corporations. It is the people who are now our greatest source of hope.

“While we young people may not be able to vote or make decisions today, we have something just as powerful,” she said. “And that is our voices. And we need to use them.”

As she had in previous speeches, Thunberg chastised adults for their inaction on fighting climate change.

“It is we young people who are the future,” she continued. “There is not enough time to wait for us to grow up and become the ones in charge because we need to tackle the climate and ecological emergency right now.”

“If the adults and people in power are too immature to realize that, then we need to let them know,” Thunberg added. “Change is coming whether you like it or not.”

For more than a year, Thunberg has been attending Friday climate rallies in cities around the world. In September, she attended the United Nations climate summit in New York City, delivering an angry and impassioned speech denouncing world leaders for failing to do more to combat climate change.

“This is all wrong,” Thunberg said. “I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean, yet you come to us young people for hope. How dare you.”

The speech at the U.N. drew the attention of President Trump, who mocked the teen in a tweet.

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future,” Trump wrote. “So nice to see!”

Thunberg responded by changing her Twitter bio to read: “A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.”

In an interview with Yahoo News in Iowa in September, Thunberg said powerful men like Trump “want to silence” young climate activists like her.

“They can sense that we are making an impact,” she said. “They obviously don’t want that. So they are using several methods to mock and hate.”

Last week, Thunberg told Ellen DeGeneres she wouldn’t want to meet with Trump even if given the opportunity.

“I don’t understand why I would do that,” Thunberg said. “I don’t see what I could tell him that he hasn’t already heard. And I just think it would be a waste of time, really.”

Wise beyond her years.  Threatening to the establishment.  Actual truth to power.

Thumper, you can't point to a single, solitary thing that has changed the past 20 years caused by a fraction of a degree in temperature change. Not one.

See me in another 20 years.

I partially agree she is influenced by adult marketing etc. but given the stuff she had written prior to any media coverage it is obvious she is intelligent, and can speak to adults far superior than her average peer.

None of that really matters though, it's the youth around her that's being motivated, and they have a lot more time left to do something than any of us.  Getting kids involved in something other than online trash talking and video games is a good thing in my opinion.

Indeed Web, we are instructed to be good stewards, of all things God created, naturally  ;)

Mankind should just abort himself, that would pretty much solve every problem, er, known to mankind  :-/

Can we just pass a law, saying nobody has to ever die, so therein, we needn't worry if the planet becomes inhabitable  :-?

Ya know what Web, I think I'll just choose Jesus, and eternal life, seems like a better bet, and not only that, I can still be happy, and joyful, while my sinning flesh and pumping heart still live in this world   ;)

Can I get a AMEN....!!!! ????  ;D ;D ;D

They are not mandatory.  Are you saying it should be mandatory?

Thumper, the earth is millions and millions of years old. 15,000 years is a second on the earth’s geological clock right?
15,000 years ago the Great Lakes weren’t there ? Where were they?
They were there, but they were glaciers.
So some scientist taking measurements over the past 20 years doesn’t really mean anything now does it?

Oh no.....just promote it more with positive references, success stories, etc.....
Can you imagine if we heard how depressed, suicidal, addicted, etc, kids, were able to move past these obstacles, to find joy and happiness, and self acceptance.....
Stronger members of society, instead of having to rely on assistance, or homeless, etc.....

It happens everyday, these results, and it cost nothing, when compared to other programs that seek the same type of results......

Diversity baby, lets not thwart anyone's chances to fulfilling their own destiny, by our own bias, and prejudices, and counter beliefs....

FREEDOM is, the freedom to chose, freely..... ( dang, that is catchy)  ;D

"Oh no.....just promote it more with positive references, success stories, etc....."

So use tax dollars to promote Christianity in schools?

 What about the other religions?

Or are you saying to provide equal resources to all religion types?  Because if that's what you are thinking that is what's being done now.  Christianity is in schools, just not required, and not to the exclusion of other religions.

I'd be interested in seeing what suggestions there are for using tax dollars to fund positive religious stories to children.

I've been here all the time....

Again, your dodging. A "second" ago, 1/3 of the US was under ice. Now you're trying to sell me on the idea we have to go backwards in energy production because an emerging industry known as climate change and some little puppet of a giel showed you manipulated data from the last 30 years? You can't point to anything in your persolife that's different yet you want to enslave millions to poverty and death because........why again?

There's almost a billion people without access to regular electricity and your message is what? Build a 15th century technology windmill? Stick a solar panel on your roof and pray for sunny days?

You're dodging the inconvenient truth that a fraction of a second ago on the earth's geological clock, 1/4 - 1/3 of the current US was covered in ice. Now, with 20 years of measurements, you're buying yet another chicken little story that we're doom if we don't undertake dramatic changes despite the fact there's nothing in your world that you can see that points to this. Nothing. It wasn't look ago 'scientist' were telling us a population bomb was coming and we were all doomed..... didn't happen. Chicken Little stories are a natural human experience I guess as is a percentage of the population that falls for them.

Relax. Stop focusing on CO2 and focus on cutting pollution. If you're serious about CO2, then research and develop nuclear power. Otherwise, you're just kidding yourself if you wind mills and solar panels are going to supply the future energy needs.

I'd run away too if I were you. You've got very little to stand on. The IPCC reports have been wrong. There's leaked emails how they were trying to hide inconvenient facts. We've been hearing about pending doom for 20 or 30 years yet there's nothing, absolutely nothing you can point to that's different now that then. Nothing.

The temp difference is minimal and mankind's contribution to that is likewise minimal. Not zero, but minimal. The Paris agreement would have done nothing, nothing to change that. Climate Change is an enormous industry right now, it's a business, and you are a consumer.

No, that's still weather.

Climate - the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

Further, the rate of change is the concern.

Though warming has not been uniform across the planet, the upward trend in the globally averaged temperature shows that more areas are warming than cooling. According to the NOAA 2018 Global Climate Summary, the combined land and ocean temperature has increased at an average rate of 0.07°C (0.13°F) per decade since 1880; however, the average rate of increase since 1981 (0.17°C / 0.31°F) is more than twice as great.

The 10 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998, and 9 of the 10 have occurred since 2005. The year 1998 is the only year from the twentieth century still among the ten warmest years on record. Looking back to 1988, a pattern emerges: except for 2011, as each new year is added to the historical record, it becomes one of the top 10 warmest on record at that time, but it is ultimately replaced as the “top ten” window shifts forward in time.

It's not about not liking it.  Your position calls out the Quran as an "ideology (that) still promotes the beheading of non-believers".

If that negates it, then the Bible should suffer the same fate.

This is not a "whataboutism".  It's a response to your objection.

Just because you don't like the response doesn't make it any less credible.

Best regards,

That's not the point of my post.

It was a response to a post that stated "bible studies would be great again, on campus, etc...."

I merely commented "Why not the Quran?"

This was used to point out that there should be no "bible studies" on public school grounds.

I had no idea that it would be yet another trigger to the conservatives.  (yet it doesn't surprise me)

Religion is the definition of tribalism...
This is particularly problematic when one religion is so dominant in a region...
Christianity can overwhelm free thought in America...
The most important aspect is not it's judgementalism, (most Christians deny this part).. but it's denial of science....
You can't teach science and deny it at the same time...
If religion is taught in schools it should be as mythology...
American children are behind enough as it is.

Let schools teach facts... let houses of worship teach faith.

Number of hurricanes and their intensity.  The graph you post actually shows an increase in the last 3 decades.  Thanks.

Why does a hysterical little girl have credibility?

Mockery and hate- just as Greta said... minus the power.  This little girl has power because she has faculties her detractors lack- integrity, discernment, and well documented historic and scientific records.     Greta, unlike Justin here, does not have to resort to unearned rationalizations to prop up her voice; claiming no personal authority, she cites the obvious state of things and our refined scientific understanding.

That hypothetical sxteen year who denies science cites the cinema for reason no doubt exists.

I literally laughed out loud when I read that. Suitable for a cartoon I suppose!

Perfect illustration of the point that this poor girl doesn't "trigger" us           (which, honestly if you use the phrase "triggers me", you better reach between your legs and see if you still got 'em) but what she does is make us laugh at you guys!

Integrity? Discernment? She's 16 years old living in a bubble!? WTF is wrong with you guys?

Well, I was being nice using the word "trigger".

I could go back to "scare" or "frighten".

Either way, she has a profound effect on the conservatives.

Curious that Mark feels a need to make clear that he disparages children of his own volition- truely exemplary of "the best people" Trump promised to surround himself with.

No....   I pay attention as I live relatively close to the Gulf of Mexico.  15 years ago I was in my house when a Cat 1 went over head and knocked over several 60 foot trees in my yard.  One of them clipped the house while I was in it.

Best regards,

Well, that's merely anecdotal.  I'll go with the scientists on this one.

Little merit exists to the information from the sources you provided.

So, the National Hurricane Center, and NOAA data has "little merit"?

With a thing as complicated as global climate taking 10 individual pieces of data when billions are available is inadequate.  Hurricanes on their own aren't enough information to indicate if climate has changed say in non-coastal areas.

All true Eegore but not equally applied. Every single significant WEATHER event is turned into CLIMATE change evidence. We had a recent cold spell here in midwest, record low temps. I heard a report that record lows are evidence of climate change due to a change in wind patterns! I guarantee if you did a Nexus search on every  hurricane that hit the mainland this year, you find network news running a story from some expert that this "is the new normal" or some other such statement.

I dunno, 40% occurred in the last 50 years.... not sure how "great" that is.

I agree, which is why I don't use network news to inform me of things accurately.
