Title: Events for 2020
Post by springman on 11/06/19 at 19:48:26

Hey ya'll. This year is just about up so I figured I would ask to see if anybody is interested in riding the Texas hill country or somewhere in Arkansas next spring (say early April or early May - I need to be home on April 25). Lots of time to start thinking about this and preparing.

Harrison AR.  seems to be right in the heart of the fun stuff !   ;)

http://www.lostvalleycanoe.com/?page_id=77

The Bunk-House is only $15.00 per person up to 4 people / $10.00 per person for more !

Never been there (yet)  :-?

I get along nicely in my 8'x10' two door tent , and have room for a second person without being cramped.  Should we go camp ground instead.  Bring your own sleeping bag Stew !  ;)

Deb and I did Arkansas at the end of September and the riding is very good.  The curves are more open than they are in the Blue Ridge area, it is sort of like riding the Blueridge Parkway without all the trees and tourists and with very wide mountain tops.  There are some really good views - but the mountains have flat tops and once you are up there it is just like riding around in farm land with low hills.  (There is one road where the ridge is only about 40 feet wide and the road narrows and you can see the mountain dropping off on both sides of the road).  You only experience the steep and really tight curves as you drop up or down the sides of the mountain, and some of those switchbacks are first gear curves - those extremely tight curves are not common.  The Arkansas Dragon is good, and the Pig Trail is excellent - it takes about an hour of riding to get to the Pig Trail from Jasper.......but the ride to and from is really good.

We rode up to Harrison and it is a busy city - but I don't think that is where you want to stay.  We got a ride brochure and a lot of the rides start in Harrison - but when we tried a few of those rides we found they were too open, too flat and often too boring and there often would be 4 lane highways for long stretches.  It is necessary to ride through Harrison to get to Eureka Springs and it is worth going to see - but the ride to/from there was pretty disappointing as it was mostly just highway riding.

Harrison is about 20 miles too far north of the good riding - I think Jasper is a better choice.  We stayed at the Dogwood Springs campground, and the good riding is only minutes away.

Not sure how early the weather gets reliable in AR......it looks like April and May are the wettest months.  As this weekend proved when we let several really good says go by and waited for the Nov 8-10 weekend to arrive just to find out the weather turned crappy- this group is not real flexible about changing the trip dates to go when the weather is good, and wet the good weather pass by without getting to ride in it.  You can't count on the weather forecast being accurate 2 weeks in advance, and even a few days out the weather can make big changes. Click on the icon for "all months" in the link below and you can see averages for temperature and rainfall each month.  Arkansas appears to be pretty dry and the wettest months have 8-10 days of rain - not sure if that comes with 1 rainy day and 2 dry days.......or 2 events with 5 straight days of rain!  When we visited for 6 days in September it rained a little bit one evening, and on the last day it rained all day.

This all sounds good to me. I love the Texas Hill Country riding and I have never been to Arkansas. Lets all start thinking about when would be a good time and who would like to go.

For those that have never been in a group ride like this, it is lots of fun. We ride, we eat, we bs and we eat some more. If you need to relax, this is a great way to get away from it all, if even for just a few days.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

I think optimum time for AR is June or Sept.

While Apr May is a good time for TX.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 11/08/19 at 03:02:43

When Deb and I were there at the end of September, it was very hot and dry, and kids were back in school and families were not camping during the week (families did come on the weekend).  We noticed a lot of areas at the rivers and streams with big parking lots and access to the water - we later learned that this area has a lot of canoe and kayak activity in the spring when the water level in the rivers provides good flow.  The campgrounds and hotels are taken up by those river folks.

It appears April/May/June are the wettest months and the river activity will be more prevalent.

So...
Twisted Sister - Apr/May - Verslagen1, Springman, Lancer, MMRanch ?
Arkansas - Sept - Verslagen1, Springman, Lancer, MMRanch  ?

I would love to do both also !   :)

Ya'll don't care which bike I bring do ya's ?   :-?

Anybody passing through my neighborhood on the way South ?   Two bikes might fit in the truck if the weather is on the mend !  and the saddlebags are off ...  ::)

Or , its a nice ride if the weather is nice.  ;)

Looking good to me. Count me in on both.

MM, if it has 2 wheels, a motor and it goes, you can bring it. ;D

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 11/14/19 at 22:07:55

Thanks Springman ,  Those larger fuel tanks make a big difference if ya really need to roll some miles away .   ;)   Remember I'm about 1,000 miles away from South Texas.

Heck , Dave might bring one of his BMW s  and ride along ... if the weather is nice ?     The V-9 only has a 4 gal tank  " but it gets over 60 mpg. if I'm nice to it " so I'll ride it as the original plan.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 11/15/19 at 04:13:57

"WE" would likely be coming to the September ride in Arkansas.  Deb enjoyed our vacation to Jasper this year and would like to do it again.  We would be bringing our camper/toyhauler and staying in it....and we would be bringing a bike that rides double as the Savage Cafe' doesn't ride two.

As the year goes on we can start planning the dates and the lodging. If we stay at the Dogwood Springs campground they have several different cabin layouts and tent camping options for you fellas.

I don't think I will be coming to Texas......that is a route that would allow me to go by MM's house and we could travel together for more than half of the trip from my house.  The trip from my house to Lynchurg and then to  Vanderpool, Texas is 1,400 miles (22 hours of travel time)........that might just be a bit too far for me to travel in my "semi-retired" status for a 3-4 day ride.

 Vanderpool, Texas      ?

Twisted Sisters , Texas .  :   https://www.ridetexas.com/the-twisted-sisters/

How many once in a lifetime EPIC Motorcycle Rides are there to do in the United States ?
Dave , this is the ONE to do in Texas where the default speed limit is 70 mph. and you have to call a State Trooper to find one !  ;D
Bring a bike with removable bags ,  we'll put the bags in the back seat and the bikes in the rear of the truck .   Fuel wise it will be about the same.

Starts near LEAKEY TX.

The "jump off" place for the 3 sisters is Vanderpool.  Th 337 sister starts getting a bit twisted just west of Vanderpool.
Leakey is the "jump off" for the 3 sisters loop (336, 41, 335, 337).  Which way you go around the loop is normally determined by prevailing winds, as riding into a stiff wind on 41 is tedious.
I don't like 41, so I usually take the "dirty sister". (336, 3235, Bullhead Road (appx 8 miles of "unimproved road surface"), 2631, 335, 337).

Yes, the 3 Twisted Sisters is something you should do if in the area, but there are many roads that I prefer over those.
As always, if any of you wander over this way, I will do my best to show you some good rides!  :D

Great to see ya here Neal. For those of you that don't know, Neal is our Texas Hill Country Expert. The most enjoyable rides I have ever been on have been with Neal leading the pack. And he is pretty good at finding good eats also. This is great riding guys. Let's do it!!! :)

Any time I can take my bike out for a 4 day cruise / plus four days travel time seems like a nice long vacation !   Dang ! 8 days in the saddle .  :)

Or 2 in the truck 4 in the saddle and 2 more in the truck still sounds good !  ;)

I think we can wait until a month before to finalize because the cabins do not fill up for this time period.

Cool. So right now it appears we have the following people interested in participating:
Verslagen
Lancer
MM
Youzguyz
Springman
and possibly Hammer

If anybody else thinks they may be interested, feel free to ask questions. The Texas Hill Country, specially with Neal leading us or giving us routes to take, is just plain an amazing ride. It is more relaxed than the Tail of the Dragon yet challenging and substantially more varied than the Dragon. We ride, we BS and we have gobs of fun. And the eateries that Neal takes us too tend to be first rate.

Work occasionally takes me to the Houston area and sometimes I drive.  Nothing in the hopper as far as I know right now, but if it develops I will see about coordinating it around these rides and truck the S40 along for an extra day or two of play time.  Not likely to all time out just perfectly, but you never know...

Just a note on the cabin, it has bunk beds for 4.  Bring your own bedding.
I can bring a cot and there's room enough for another, although it gets tight.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by springman on 01/23/20 at 14:45:10

Yep, it can get a bit tight but we have had six in the cabin before and we really don't spend too much time there anyway. Of course if we gut more people we can get another cabin.

I've got permission , all I need is good weather !   :)

My Savage is back to the 2.7 gal. tank and its about 1000 miles one way.

I might want to bring something with a larger tank or a truck this year if ya'll don't care .   Making life easier seems to be more important  now than it did the first time we went to RIDE THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY .    ;D

If anybody is passing my way and wants to put a second bike in the truck , then the truck automatically wins.

No pressure.. right??
Would you like perfect weather with that?  $1.49 gasoline?

Wellll... doesn't always work out that way.
Horrendous hail (that was a bullet dodged!!!    :o
Busted shocks.  (The cattle guard wasn't that bad.. )  ::)
Kissing the mountain.  (Hate it when that happens).  :(

Still, like Springman says, it is gobs of fun!!!

Neal does not lead.. Neal rides where he feels like going and sometimes people follow him.

I'm flexible ,  The  week of the 20's is still open in April too.  Weather is the whole thing.

I am no longer flexible.  I creak and pop when I move.

ANYWAY..  For the moment, Thumper is in mothball mode.  He is appx 250 miles short of 200,000.

So.. we MIGHT have a 2k party.  As long as Mad Hamish can keep me on two wheels.  :D

This also gives versy a chance to make 100,000 before I pop the 200,000 in his face  ;D

If the trip isn't going to happen.. well.... I ain't gonna mothball Thumper for another year!   Keep me informed!

The last week in April would allow Deb and I to come down and ride with you a day or two.  We will likely be staying at the D Rose Inn in Leakey Texas.  We will want to go and see the bats fly out of the cave one evening, and there is a famous hamburger place near the bat cave where we would like to eat one meal.

We could not leave until until April 26th, and it is a full 2 days worth of driving.....we would be arriving sometime the evening of the 28th.

If you can pick the week you are going soon - it will allow Deb and I to be able to reserve the hotel room.

Leakey is over an hour from the rest of the gang will be staying.   I'm not sure why you are staying there..  :-?
Normally, only one ride goes through Leakey, the one to do the 3 sisters.

The bat cave and restaurant you are likely speaking of are the Old Tunnel State Park
https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/old-tunnel
and Alamo Springs Cafe
https://www.facebook.com/alamospringscafe/

You might want to read up on the Bat Tunnel.  I don't know how much action you will get at the end of April..  I also doubt that the bats can read a calendar, so it might be a pretty good time!

Alamo Springs Cafe is a lunch stop that the gang always makes during one of the rides.  If you are doing the bats, then you will probably be doing dinner there as well.  I don't know how crowded it gets at that time.

We watch the Texas Country Reporter, and we see things that we would like to visit.  Some of the shows are a bit dated, and therefore the information is not always up to date.

Yep, the Alamo Springs Cafe' is where we want to.  The bats are May through October - so you are right that there are likely no bats in April.

We had wanted to stay in Leaky at the D Rose Inn - Dr. Deb appeared to be our kind of people!  Turns out it is no longer motorcycle only, and is called the Historic Leakey Inn.

My Deb cannot stay in a cabin or tent right now - her health issues don't allow her stay in a place that doesn't have a toilet in the room.

I just discussed that with Deb - she needs a place to stay with a bathroom next to the bedroom.

Depends on the weather ?   If I truck the S-40 goes , If I ride then a larger fuel tank is bringing me.   One of them has a 5.5 gals. and 50+ mpg.  the other has 4 gallons and 55+ mpg .  ???

Yep, the Alamo Springs Cafe' is where we want to.  The bats are May through October - so you are right that there are likely no bats in April.

We had wanted to stay in Leaky at the D Rose Inn - Dr. Deb appeared to be our kind of people!  Turns out it is no longer motorcycle only, and is called the Historic Leakey Inn.

My Deb cannot stay in a cabin or tent right now - her health issues don't allow her stay in a place that doesn't have a toilet in the room.

Dave,
Alamo Springs Cafe is no longer owned by Mike Tangman.  While still a good place to eat, it is not as good as it was.. in my eyes.. or stomach.  Sold it about a year ago.
Mike is sort of a friend of mine.  Back then, I would get there a bit before they opened, and always parked my bike in the same spot.  If Mike saw me outside, he would start my order (he knew what I was going to get) and tell me to come inside.  He would sit with me and talk for a while.  Usually ate half my cheese sticks, then took them off the bill.  Had Sirius Classic Rewind or Classic Vinyl playing all the time.
New owner.  Fired all the old help. Country Western music.  No more pumpernickel bread for my burger.
The menu is probably much the same.. it just isn't the same place.  We will have a lunch there though.
Also at HillBillyz.. Billy is another "friend" of mine.

I'm sure there are "motorcycle friendly" places to stay in or around Kerrville.
A quick search came up with this:
https://www.her-motorcycle.com/hunter-house-inn-and-suitesingram-tx.html
I don't know old the review is, but the business is still there.
A bit down the road from where the cabins are.. but not horrible far.
You could probably find a motel/hotel in Kerrville proper that would suit your needs.

If there are places that you or Deb want to go and see, let me know so I can put them "on route".  :D

Amen Lancer !

I am of the understanding that the virus is not heat tolerant .   Also more information on how to fight back is out there now.

Things like :

You can tell if its growing in your lungs by , hold a deep breath for 10+ seconds --- if your lungs are holding liquids you can't hold your breath that long with out difficulty.
The virus goes about 10 foot in a cough
The virus lives about 12 hours on surfaces
The virus gets destroyed in stomach acids
We need to sip on a warm drinks at least every (15 mins.)  Washing it down to the stomach not the lungs .
Hugging and shaking hands is done for a while.
Constant temps above the 28 C. will kill it.

Information has always been a powerful tool !  :)

MM:

You bringing your truck?  I have an older 100/90-18 Sport Demon front tire I can bring you.

Maybe I will also have a nearly brand new 90/90-18 front and 130/70-18 rear Pilot Sport Activ as well.  I am taking them of the Cafe' bike, as they are just too stiff and the bike handles poorly.   I am mounting Avon AM26 Roadriders on to see if the bike handles better.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 03/14/20 at 23:59:33

Hay Dave ,   The front tire on the V-7 is an 18" .    Yea I'm bring the truck , Marcia wouldn't have it any other way.   ;D

I took Springman's tip and put a Shinko 712 on the rear and got a RoadRider on the front.   If it has good tread I'm OK with putting on a pre-used tire long as it ain't too old.

It might be a while before I need a front but I suspect not more than a year.  Then another year to wear it out too .  I suspect a 90/90 mounted on a 100/90 rim would still be round enough to serve well , and that Pilot Sport Activ is a handsome tire !     ;)
...........................

I wouldn't know what to do with the 130/70-18 as the front 18" is the only 18" I got.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 03/15/20 at 12:19:00

The 100/90-18 Sport Demon - I rode on it one year and then switched to a 90/90-18, it likely only has 2,000 miles on it.  It has been stored in my garage and has been between 60-80 degrees....it still feels soft and very serviceable.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 03/15/20 at 15:32:59

Thanks Dave ,

I took the original Front Sports Demon off early when it ripped during our last Suches trip  .
I either lost my nerve (or) had a temporary vision of good sense (?)( :-?) as I left a full leaning right curve and came flying into a quickly approaching left curve that had no banking built into it.
So , I touched the Front Brake in a BIG-WAY (something I don't do much).   The anti lock brake system kicked in and at the same time ripped that soft tire from left to right down to the carcus for about an inch.
That was when the Sports Demon had about 6,600 miles on it.   I believe the tread life would have been close to 10k miles even with using only the front for 98% of all braking chores.

So yea , I'll be glad to have a nice sticky front tire to replace the semi-soft Road Rider I'm running now.  :)
It feels good when the Front tire stays planted solid !   ;)    I'll try to behave better with this next one !  ::)

....................................................

Really , I like my cooking better than almost any restaurant I've been to except ... That breakfast place in Comfort and them home made breakfast shells  !  :)
.......................................

I'll bring my 2 burner propane stove and double burner grill anyway.  I like to do things like :

put 2 pork loins in the 8 quart crock pot for 6-8 hours and shred it with scissors for pulled pork BBQ.  (Can serve up to 20 people)

Fry (brown) a couple pounds of frozen mixed veg's in butter to serve on top of baked potatoes.
.........................................

I'm doing the anti-virus wipe down thing when I leave a public place and before I enter my safe areas .    I hope ya'll are doing the same.   :)

If the virus might last into the summer then the information about not being heat tolerant must not be right ... ?

I haven't been tracking the restaurant situation closely, as it is too early to even worry about it.  If push comes to shove.. cook and carry and picnic.
My life hasn't changed much, except the store was insane when I tried to do my normal early Saturday shopping last weekend.
Still need to go and get milk for the week.. as I have been to busy with work (I work out of the house) and PGR missions to make it to the store.

If ya'll cancel out for one reason or another, I will be disappointed, but will certainly understand the reasons.

For a Savage - I am guessing this is likely the one and only.

For bikes like Gold Wings, BMW's, ST1100/1300, FJR and other larger touring bikes, there are quite a few.  In order to get these kind of miles the bikes are ridden a lot......and get the miles racked up in a relatively short number of years.

On the ST forum a courier in the UK had over 350,000 miles on his ST1100 and the engine had never been apart - but did get maintenance items like timing belts, clutch, water pump.

In our local CMAUSA group the highest millage bike is a 1983 Goldwing with about 90K miles on it.   The second highest is probably  my S-40 with about 50K miles.

I remember dad telling tales of the older 1950's cars not lasting 100K miles.  I figured that might have been from inferior oils ?
......................

My highest millage Sportster was the last one , 883 w/1200 primary gearing.   It was almost 50K miles and just beginning to weep oil around the gaskets on the head .    It didn't really loose the oil level any and if I cleaned it more often then the weeping might not have showed up hardly at all.

I believe a lot of things have contributed to the higher mileage that vehicles can obtain.  Oils are better, engineering/manufacturing/materials are better.  I also believe that fuel injection has added a lot of life to the piston rings and cylinder walls - when we had carbs and chokes the fuel mixture with the choke out was too rich and washed the oil off the cylinder walls.  Another big contributor is the highways and taller gearing in vehicles - it used to be that cars and especially trucks were geared low, and highways speeds around the rural area I lived were 45-60 mph, and trips were generally short.  Now cars all have overdrive and the engine speeds are low at highway speeds.

When I was in my youth a car with 100,000 miles was generally worn and burning oil - especially 4 cylinder cars.  I could not afford new cars and I bought older cars that were getting worn - my VW Beetle/Bus cars all got total rebuilds,  My BMW 320i, Volkswagen GTI, and Audi Fox all got rebuilds with the block still in the chassis - the cylinder heads came off and went to the machine shop, and I pulled the oil pan and pulled the pistons out, and put in new rings and rod bearings.....the cylinders were good but the rings were worn, and the valves and seats needed refreshing.  The BMW had worn rockers.

Once the fuel injection became standard.....I believe cars began to last considerably longer, and cars with 300,000 miles are around. My 2006 Pontiac Vibe now has 166,000 miles on it and it runs great - I would not be surprised it it makes it to 250,000 miles!

Food:

I was out on a 3 day trip through KY/TN earlier this week.  Getting food at restaurants was not a problem - but it was carry out or drive through only.  You could eat in your car - it was raining so I don't know if they would chase you out if you tried to eat at the outside tables.

If things don't change drastically in the next month, I suspect we won't have any trouble finding places to eat - we will just not be able to go into the dining room.......and they may even close their bathrooms.  (I was able to use the bathroom at 2 places I stopped to get food).

I watched a viraligist talk about the Corona virus last night.  He stated the summer heat will not likely kill the virus and put an end to the spread - as it does not live in the fresh air anyhow.  The infected people carry it with them, and they ride in the cars and live in their homes and offices with the AC on.  If you get the virus on your clothes or skin - it can survive long enough to get to the next host in our world of climate controlled buildings.

KY is shutting down all non-essential retail stores tonight.

So , basically your saying it don't matter where we go .   The safe habits need to go on anywhere we go

It may be a while before the old relaxed life of "not giving germs a second thought" are over for now.

The only time we can relax our efforts is while we're ridding !  So stopping for gas for me involves getting out the wipes and wiping the gas hose before I touch it.

Wipe down or wear disposable rubber gloves when out (don’t touch your face) and strip when you get home, put your OWN clothes in the washer and turn on, shower.   Then kiss your wife.

I really don't know that means... it doesn't say you can't rent a cabin.. doesn't say you can.

Unless Deb goes shopping - it won’t be necessary to borrow any storage space.

I can take them off and leave them at the Motel if they try to pull the Shopping thing a second time.   ;)

It appears the Governor of Texas has imposed an order that requires people traveling into Texas to be quarantined.......it appears that is most relevant to people coming from Louisiana - but it also allows they can name other states at a later date.  If any of the states we come from or pass through are later named - it might not be a very fun trip.

I have no idea how Texas will enforce this - unless they start monitoring traffic and look for out of state license plates.

https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/EO-GA-12_roadway_quarantine_for_COVID-19_IMAGE_03-29-2020.pdf

We still have nearly a month before the trip - maybe things will be better by then.  KY only has 50 cases a week ago - in a week it has jumped to 300 and we have 1 case in my county.

I hate to be the one bearing the bad news, but, it is going to get worse before it gets better. Even if it stays the same as now it will interfear with your trip. The actual riding might be as expected, but the overall experince will sufer. IF you are allowed to meet up at all.
I have cancled two trips for this spring already, looks like a year for short trips and catching up around the house. I have a pile of lead and have got the revolver molds cleaned up and ready to go. A couple fiberglass projects,,, maybe a Indian style front fender. Yea, keep busy without going too insane.

It appears the Governor of Texas has imposed an order that requires people traveling into Texas to be quarantined...

Does that mean once we're in Texas then we can't leave for two weeks ?    :-/

This is the first year that Marcia can go with me to see the Blue Bonnets and such.   I hope to be there for the First Savage Crossing 200,000 miles too .   Then there is the $$$ thing , as I understand the motel canceling policy it will have me loosing $350.oo .   Loosing a few buck is better than catching this virus so I hope this mess is clearing up in the next month.  Besides , If I'm gone much more than the 10 days I've got planned then I might have cows and dogs with no master to keep them home !  ::)

How about it Springman , your the closest thing to a friend in the medical field I know .... What do you think ?   :-?

YouzGuyz , if we have to call it off ... then I'll still buy ya dinner when you cross 200,000 miles and we finally get around to visit.  :)

Versey it makes me sorta nervous too , but ya know Dave has promised me a "Like New" tire I kinda hate to miss-out on !   ;D

This does not sound good.

From the order:
"A covered person shall remain in the designated quarantine location for a period of 14 days or the duration of the person’s presence in Texas, whichever is shorter, leaving only to seek medical care or to depart from Texas."
A covered person being someone who comes in into Texas from Louisiana ( and is not on the exception list).

Sure, you can come in through Arkansas.. for now.

And, you can still get out if you want.. after spending all your time in "self quarantine".  You don't have to wait the full 2 weeks to leave!  You just can't go out anywhere unless you are here for 2 weeks.

I would really like to make this event happen, and I will drag you through the hills.. well out in front.. ahead of your germs..   until MM goes blazing past me.   ::)
But, when the time comes, what will be open for eateries?  What about fun places for the ladies to shop and spend our BBQ money?  Will the wine tours be running?  What restrictions will be in place?  Will there be .. toilet paper?

I would love to see you come in and  have a good time.  I would rather you get your deposits back if you can, and stay healthy.  Maybe you can get "credit" for a stay at a later time?

Is it too early to pull the plug?  Will it be too late to pull the plug later?

I wish I knew..   :-/

The KY governor has decreed that no KY citizens should leave the state except for medical and a few other reasons.  If I do....there is a mandatory quarantine for 14 days when I return.  A week in Texas could cost me 2 weeks of work when I return, as they will not let me come into work.

So....it appears I am out as well.   Bummer!

I am not entirely sure that the next few weeks/months will bring - our state continues to be on lock down until April 30, and I would not be surprised if that gets extended into May.  Currently if I leave the state I need to quarantine myself for 14 days when I return.

When it is acceptable to leave the state again, I will be ready to go riding.  I believe we could ride motorcycles and do social distancing pretty safely if we sleep in our own tents.  The big problem likely becomes sharing the campground bathroom and getting fuel and food in public areas.

I am still riding whenever I get a chance.  I live in a rural area and there are good roads here and when nice weather allows I sneak in a ride.

As soon as the travel ban is lifted I am going to want to go to TN/NC/GA and do some riding!

Maybe I should have listened better to the "Plan to RE-Open" the country?

Right now , when I go away from home I breath through a 24hr germ killing wipe on the inside of my home made mask , and use another germ killing wipe to clean the credit card area and fuel pump with.   So it cost two wipes for me to leave the house now.

I've seen him drink from a 2 liter Mountain Dew bottle that has been rattling around in his saddlebag for 3 days in 90 degree weather.

Refrigeration? We don't need no stinkin' refrigeration!

Na guys , after the liquid carrier evaporates off  there is just a slight tint of cleaning stuff smell.   Its supposed to keep killing germ for up to 24 hours after wiping a surface with it.

But Dave is  right !  Who needs Stinking Refrigeration !!   Some times it takes me three days to finish a 2 liter bottle ... sipping on a drink of anything while on the tractor during a long sunny day , sometimes turns into drinking hot water .    It still is better than nothing .

I have never stolen gas.

I have learned to only siphon if I can use a clear hose - so I can see when the gas is coming!

With modern fuel injection there ain't no pulling the fuel line off the carb to fill a bottle!   When we went to Lancers we all didn't fill up before getting on the mountain road from Oklahoma to Arkansas , so there was a lot of filling up a mountain dew bottle getting over the top.  It all worked out good.   With the S-40 fuel tank being so small we should all have a clear hose in our "O-C---" kit.
......................................

Here's a thought :

Next week end is forecast to be clear and warm.

I'm thinking , "Take a ride to Suches Friday - spend Saturday ridding - ride home Sunday."   Camping in a one man tent .   One of the guys on the Guzzi site says the restaurant is open for carry out and that gas station is open too.  I have a whole box of disinfectant wipes !   ;)

MM:

If the weather holds out and we can get dry weather......I would love to go to Suches.

Let's watch the weather and then decide as the weekend gets closer.  I would likely trailer my bike down and eet you in Suches, as going through Lynchburg makes the 7 hour trip a 9.5 hour trip (without stops).  I can sleep in my trailer and won't have to set up a tent.

I am sure we can get carry out food in the town, and the curvy road to town is a lot of fun!

That little trailer has sure been handy for quite--few years now.

I'm thinking I should bring the BIG FUEL TANK bike and my pop-up tent.   I'd rather catch meals in town at the mom & pop places too.    Like our BBQ Calaboose has a meal deal for 4 that has a 16oz cup of BBQ , 16oz each of two sides and 4 buns in a gallon ziplock for $19.99 -type stuff. So , we need two more Savages to join us to help cut-down on the left overs .
I've been seeing the "Jack's" commercial w/Chicken-BLT & fries way to much too !      :P
Praying for nice weather !  ;)

Yep, this little enclosed trailer has been great!  I works as an enclosed cycle hauler, and a small camper.  My little 4 cylinder Pontiac Vibe pulls it great - even up Jelico Mountain I can keep out of the way of the semi trucks!

If the weather is suitable, I believe I will be going down on Wednesday and be ready to ride early Thursday morning........and then leave Sunday morning (or as long as the weather stays dry).

Georgia has opened everything up - so we likely won't have any trouble getting food or fuel.  I still think we can be somewhat careful about our exposure - and not be careless.  We will likely find the roads pretty low on traffic and tourism.

If the coming weekend doesn't work out for some reason - the following weekend looks good too.  The night temperatures and early morning ride are likely a bit cool - daytime highs look nice.  I will be bringing the BMW F800, as the Savage currently has the front end apart.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

The weather has changed slightly and will likely change again - but Sunday now looks like the best day, and I hate to load up the bike and drive home on the only 85 degree day!  I will likely stay and ride all day Sunday and go home on Monday.

If you are riding home on Sunday MM.....I could ride part of the way with you and then turn back toward Suches and ride out the rest of the day getting back.

However - there is no absolute when it comes to spring weather!

Mike:

Yep....still have the same number.

It looks like I will be leaving on Wednesday and will be in Suches late that evening.  I will be ready to ride on Thursday morning.....there is a slight chance of an occasional morning showers - but not later on.

I could ride out to meet you somewhere along your route on Friday if you let me know your route.  Not sure if you want to use the Life360 tracking program for the phone.....or try and figure out a place to meet.  Just before you cross into Georgia there is the Ocee River area and then Copperhill.  That area might be a good place to meet.

Post by Dave on 04/28/20 at 11:27:32

I looked at the weather and thought maybe I could/should stop at Deals Gap and ride the Dragon area on Thursday - but they have a good chance of showers on Thursday.

The weather for Suches still looks great for Fri/Sat/Sun - there is a chance of showers Thursday....one weather report says PM and the other says AM.  There is 48 more hours for them to make up their minds.

https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ga/suches

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/suches/30572/daily-weather-forecast/2153437

MM........we can attempt to meet in Copperhill.  Mapquest claims it is 158 miles and takes about 3 hours to get from Lynchburg to Copperhill.  So adding that you will have to stop for fuel and a bit of rest along the way......you should be able to make it in 3.5 - 4 hours.

What time you planning on leaving on Friday?  And let me know if that is "your" time or "my" time, as our time zones are different by an hour (You are in Central, I am in Eastern).

Badwolf:

I looked at the websites:  Deals Gap does not have any hotel or camping - but the restaurant and store are open 9-5 for carry out.  Two Wheels of Suches is not opening the restaurant or the lodge rooms - but they are renting cabins and the campground.

MMRanch:

That bridge looks like a good place to meet.  There is a gas station with a Subway on the Copperhill, TN side of the bridge - on the McCaysville, GA side there are some interesting shops, and maybe they will be open for business.......there is on street parking on the right side of the street in front of the shops just after you cross the bridge, and I will look for you there (and you can look for me there). If you leave at 11 eastern time (10 Central) and it takes 3 hours at MapQuest pace you will be there at 2....and a more casual pace will get you there at 3.

I loaded up the bike tonight, tomorrow I will pack the rest of the stuff and get rolling around noon....arrival time in Suches will likely be around 8PM.

Just for everybody's info. A friend who  lives just a few miles from TWO advises the county has several new speed radar units and the county is being more aggressive toward  speeders. I don't know but suspect they are mostly deployed on the major roads rather than the remote twisties.
Bill

Just seen this on the Guzzi site .   I  can behave most of the time ... mostly !   ::)    Not slowing down for the curves is what makes it fun for me anyway.

Dave , You might not recognize my Guzzi , but being there ain't to many of them out and about ... any Guzzi you see will likely be mine .    I'll look for a White BMW there ain't too many of them either .  ;)    If you get there first then leave me a parking space.  :)

MM: The Guzzi folks have a forum?  I didn't know you could speak Italian!

I won't have any trouble recognizing your Guzzi.....even if it is one I have never seen before.  It will be the only one with a Mountain Dew bottle mounted to the handlebars.

I remember the area having pretty reasonable speed limits - if you were a sport bike owner the speed limits would be easy to break on some of the roads as the turns are big sweepers.  A local fellow owns a Ducati Multi-Strada and when he goes down with his sport bike friends he wears out a new set of tires in 5 days of riding.

I do think the Richard B Russel Scenic Highway has a 35mph speed limit, and we likely will have a tough time with that!

Well I got here last night around 10PM, the entire drive down here was in very hard rain, and it stopped about an hour after I arrived.  It is around 45 degrees and cloudy and has been drizzling - it is not supposed to start clearing until 3PM........I guess I got here a day too early!

The next 3 days are supposed to be really nice - however they start out a bit cool.  I can spend the next few hours getting the bike unloaded and things organized, then go for a ride if things dry up a bit.

So , you thinking about 15:00 Eastern (14:00 Central) at the Copperhill bridge ?   I'll ride around the block looking for ya , then park close as I can get to the bridge.   Hopefully within sight of it.   If they have a sandwich shop I might need to grab a bite about that time anyway.

If 15:00 works for ya.

Kent said he might be able to come ride for a bit Saturday ???  There should be a few of the Guzzi folks there this weekend too.   I met one of them  (twowheeladdict) in Murfreesboro one time and we rode back to Shelbville together .  He was pushing a 400cc Himalaya about as hard as he could and made me work to keep-up with him .  :)
You know how those folks are who buy European Motorcycles are !  ;D

There is one of them Guzzi bikes called the  Stelvio and another called the GRiSO , they are both 100+ hp. sports bikes and are really popular with this bunch.

Things finally starting drying up in the late afternoon, and I went for a ride to get dinner in Dahlonega around 6....it was in the middle 50's by then.

The Chick-fil-A is drive up service only - not sure if that will change with May 1st tomorrow or not.  I rode down to the reservoir and ate my dinner there.......nicer view than the parking lot uptown.

MM - See you in Copperhill/McCaysville tomorrow.  I brought two folding chairs - so don't bother trying to pack one, as you may want to haul your Sport Demon tire and tube home with you!

Hwy 5 south, Greens Mill , Snake Nation , Dial ,Swan ,Margret ,Baxter ,Gaddis Town , Suches ...
All together its looks like quite an adventure !   :-?

It may be the "Shortest" route between Suches and CopperHill ?

Does your estimate of the shortest route include the missed turns and general GPS confusion?

I can program my GPS for Two Wheels of Suches.....and at some point we will likely make it back - shortest route or not.

It was 43 and really windy when I got up this morning - the sun is up and by noon we should be up in the 50's......I don't need to leave until a bit after that to make our meeting in Copperhill - but I am likely to head out and do some riding once the chill burns off.  I really didn't pack enough clothes for riding in 40 degree temps (silly me).

It finally warmed up this morning and I left around 10 AM when the temperature was up around 50.  I rode around for a few hours before heading up to meet Mike in Copperhill.  Along the way I found a road worth stopping to snap a selfie.....good thing I had a bandana to use as a mask while I stopped to take the photo!

I got into Copperhead and saw Mike's Guzzi parked in a Subway lot, and he was inside getting his lunch.  I went to a place on the corner and got Cuban food.

We had a great riding day and even got to ride in temps up around 70!  We rode back and got Mike's gear unloaded and his tent set up, then went to town and got Zaxby's.  It sure is a bit weird riding the motorcycle in the drive thru lane.....the Governor of Georgia extended the current restrictions until May 15.

Glad you guys are having a good time. I went for about a 2 hour ride here in the Houston area. I rode the back roads up to a town called Conroe and then came back on the highway. I have to admit that I just have not found any good (curvy) roads anywhere near me. I need to get to the Hill Country.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

Yesterday Mike's brother Kent came and rode with us for the day.  The weather had warmed up a bit and it was 47 at night and warmed up to the 70's during the day.  Kent had a 1994 Sportster with extended forks, short rear shocks, a thin single seat, and a clutch lever that will make a man out of you!  Kent can ride that bike incredibly well and there isn't any way you can leave him behind - his tires are scuffed all the way to the edge of the tread......no "Chicken Strips" on his tires!

There was a dual sport group meeting at the Two Wheels of Suches, and they had to open up a pasture for overflow truck/trailer parking for all the bike being hauled in.  Once they all got on the road they pretty much disappeared into the back roads, trails and woods.  There was a lot of traffic on Saturday - mostly bikes and Jeeps.  The campers, RV's and motorhomes have not moved into the area as the National and State campgrounds have not yet opened up.  We were able to eat inside at a real restaurant in Helen - the first time I have been in a restaurant in a month and a half.  The tables were spread apart and the staff were wearing masks.

This morning was even warmer yet and it was 52.  MM and I got breakfast at the Two Wheels, then he finished packing and headed out.  I rode with him until around 3:30 and then turned around and headed home.  I will let MM tell you his version of the story - but let me just say we had planned on riding north on 60, then going west on 76 to Ellijay were we could pick up 52 West and go over the mountain to Chatsworth.  Unfortunately MM and I let our Garmins drag us off our intended course, and we ended up on horrible roads that took us 30 miles south of Ellijay.........I believe we rode for an hour on my most un-favorite form of road!

At Chatsworth MM headed west toward Lynchburg, and I headed to a car wash!

I took a southern route of of Chatsworth on 411 to try 76 west over the mountain, and it turned out to be a bit to civilized and the 52 route was much prettier.  I made it back to Suches around 7, and began packing up my stuff for my departure on Monday morning.

It was great weather for riding....a bit chilly for sleeping - a very nice weekend of riding!

Those North Ga.Mountains are COLD AT NIGHT .

I got to our meeting place an hour earlier than I thought I would (Coppertown,Tn.)  it was past lunch time ... so there I was and there was a Sub-Way .   The natural chain of events took place till I got my order and turned to leave ... well ... there was somebody peeking into the window like a kid at a adult movie ... it was funny !  ;D     But I didn't drop my drink or anything at the shock of seeing Dave there grinning at the shocked look I must have had.

Friday was a very nice day to ride with a jacket too.  Dave went to the Cuban place across the street and got some lunch and our adventure started with having lunch on a big flat rock beside a river full of Ducks and a few geese.   We were sitting on the big flat rock so its not in the picture.

Springman you would have   LOVED  the road we took to the Two-Wheels-of-Suches campground .   It wound through the mountains for two hours of 30 - 60 mph twisties .   Then we came to the Lodge/TWS/CampGround.

Saturday my Brother Kent who lives in north Ga. showed up right after breakfast and after a bit of front porch at the lodge time we rode.  We went over "Blood Mountain" without loosing any blood and kept going over "Helen Mountain" .   Helen Ga. (google it) is a little German town reconstructed in the N.Ga. hills.  It "Looks" like a (1850's) German town.   The first place we passed had pick-nick tables outside by the river with a guy playing a guitar and singing mellow stuff in the shade .  :)  Of course the only tables not filled were in the full after noon sun  :(  ... But Dave talked to the waitress and save us from a baking so we sat inside the restaurant beside a picture window overlooking the same river.   8-)

After Lunch/Dinner me and Kent swapped bikes for a while and I rode the Testicle Tingler  .   It kinda reminded me of a 1971 Honda 350 twin I had years ago ... but with a lot more of everything (including the tingles).   ::)

That went on till we found the Dreaded Road-Construction and the line of Dump-Truckss , Car , and Flag men to go with it.

But once again Dave pulled an Idea out of his hat !    So after a "U-Turn" and a few side roads we headed for (Google this one too) "Wolf-Pen-Gap" , we have all been on WPG before so me and Kent traded bikes back before jumping on this Pack-of-Twisties   ;).

So after another hour of playing with the Pack and all the other fun pavement leading to the TWS Lodge we finished the day where we started it ... on the porch swapping stories with the rest of the lie-ers
folks , and I met three of the Guzzi people in person I'd met on line .  Apparently there arn't any strangers on the porch in the late afternoons , or the parking lot either .

Sunday , That was a day that those who were there will never forget !   ;D

I have a picture and a video ... not sure how to post the video and you'll have to voooom the picture , but that is Dave on a Dirt/Gravel/Forest Road.

The GPS said turn Left ...  ::) , we both have Garmin's and they both said the same thing ... so it may not be totally our faults ???

Now after we got to the other end and it came out at a Ranger Station in the middle of no-where with four dirt roads and one black-top meeting at the 5 point intersection --- then Dave says , " I think the (FT-14) on the Garmin might have been for (Forrest-Trail ???) .  There were maybe more than 14 of them but I'm not going back to count them !

That  road  was steep and chunky with dirt , rocks , ruts , and water crossings that my TRACTION CONTROL kept turning my throttle off when I needed it most .    The bike I was on , was loaded with a tent , 2 chairs , sleeping bag , tarp , overnight bag , and a tire & tube that Dave brought to give me along with a bunch of stuff I can't even think of ... I barely had a place to sit pushed up against the gas tank.

Dave on dirt after the ruff stuff was over and I could stop and get my phone out.

The rest of the trip was not to eventful .   So it was 75 and 80 down the super slab most of the way home .

I saw a storm coming from the South West  while I was coming from the South East  about 30 miles before I got home .   It looked like I might meet it before I got home , but I got home a 17:10 and the Storm got here at 17:20 .    That seems like cutting it really close at the end of a 200 mile ride !  ;)

I don't know Springman , there were only a couple time we all did power-take-offs , just to try each other out .   But I found we were all "well balanced in power" , and ya don't want to spend all your back tire rubber on one trip !   ;D

Mostly ridding between 30 and 60 is just easy going , and the S-40 runs up to 60 about as good as anything else.    Even when I ride with my 1800cc Goldwing hotrod buddies , my S-40 keeps up .   Most of the time those "Shooting it off the line" things end before the speed limit is broken.  I mostly brought the V-9 for the interstate ride there and back.

Here is a surprising thing.  The Guzzi 853 cc gets (60 mpg plus) doing those mountain rides then mid 55-58 mpg doing 75 + 80 running down the hwy.  The old 750 LTD Kawasaki I used to have only got about 42 mpg on a good day.  My wallet needs a break every chance I can give it , even with cheep gas --- a break is still a break !   :)

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 05/04/20 at 18:02:35

Springman:  You would not have any trouble riding with us.  We don't tend to ride much over 50 or 60 on any road - and the corners are where we have our fun.  We corner fast than the cars - but slower than the aggressive fellows on their sport bikes and Motards.

I got packed up and headed out this morning around 8 AM.  The GPS claimed I would be home in 6.5 hours....it took close to 10!  I made a few stops for food and gas, stopped to look at the dam on the Ocoee River, and took a back road out of Lexington to get home as I had enough interstate.  Part of the extra time is that my little Pontiac can't pull a trailer at 66 mph on route 60 in GA...the road is just too curvy and too many hills.  And on the intestate there are a lot of hills that slow me down to 60 in the 70 mph speed limit areas.

When I was just outside Lexington my wife called to see where I was - she fell off her bicycle and had gotten hurt, and was going to get checked out at an orthopedic center.  I called them and they said I could not come in because of their Coronavirus restrictions - so I just went home and waited and unpacked.  Turns out her knee is just bruised and swollen - but her elbow is broken.  She sure does break easily!

I have a few more photos to post.....I will do it tomorrow as I am ready for bed.

Dave, so sorry to hear about your wife. I hope she heals quickly.

MM, you are right, up to about 60 the S40 does pretty darn good. On the highway though 65-70 mph or so is the sweet spot. It'll do more but it feels like I am pushing it. And after those highway runs I find a good bit of oil all over the left side of the engine and bike.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 05/05/20 at 06:44:59

a good bit of oil all over the left side of the engine and bike.

?  I wonder if its coming from the top right and just running down hill when on the kick stand ?

I'm up to about 50k miles and not a drop coming out on its own yet ...
Just lucky I guess ?

I think ??? Pull the tank and re-tighten the head bolts .   I've had two of these bikes and both of them let me remove the head cover without pulling the engine.   There is one bolt in the center that stays in place while the cover comes off and on .
That RTV ultra Grey has never failed me for a sealer.  A little on both surfaces , wait for it to semi-set , after both sides meet - wait 20 minutes before tightening (so ya don't squish it all out) .   Finished product might be .002-4" thick gasket .  Works for me , I hope it does for you !  :)

Versey has a "improved PLUG COVER"  you might have on hand before pulling the tank ?  :-/      I've got one of them ... if I ever need the cover off ?

Another interesting thing :

So , Dave and I was on that dirt road getting dirty.   Well the up hill was over and there was a down hill for mile after mile  .   Idling along down hill , for a long time in first gear trying not to stir-up a dust ball ... my check engine light comes on  ???  :-[

Apparently , burning air in the cylinders with out the cooling effect of the injectors adding some gas makes for a HOT SITUATION !  :-?    I put it in Neutral (motor off) and rode the brake instead of idling the motor for the next 45 minutes to the Ranger Station.   We had no idea how far the Range Station was either .

The light stayed on till this morning when I went out to the carport and hooked  up the bike to my computer and got the right program running .

That's when it occurred to me :   I've never had to do this with the Savage !

:)

We need to keep this in mind for our next trip to Suches, as it was a far more pleasant ride than the dirt/gravel/mud roads Garmin put us on.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 05/06/20 at 18:12:37

Springman:

Yep, belt drive, 90HP, heated grips, ABS, push button suspension adjustment, tire pressure monitors, and a couple of trip odometers, mpg display, miles to empty, ambient temperature, clock.....lap timer!  The factory claims the belt should be replaced at 24,000 miles - most folks get double or more miles out of them.

I really do like this F800GT.....it does a lot of things really well.  The only thing that has taken me a while to get under control is the wind noise from the windshield, as the stock one put way too much air on my head.  It took me several windshield tries to get it right.

Sharing information of the ones  I've had personal experience  ...
Springman , that BMW 800cc gets better MPG  than my Guzzi V7-II.  I understand the V7-III that has the Hemi head is more powerful and has MPG as good as the BMW , but it's still only 53 HP.   My V-9 gets over 60 mpg but the BMW 800 gets a little better.
Right now the V7-III left-over 2018's are $7k-ish new.   But the BMW 800 is a nice machine !   So many nice bikes to choose from ,
...................

Ya know there comes a point when ya got enough HP and more just gets ya in trouble , like my nephew's with a 138 HP - 400 lb. Suzuki 750 , constant maintenance nightmare .   ;D

Dave, it sounds like you get just as much info on your bike as I do on my car ... maybe more. :) That sounds like a pretty sweet bike. I have to admit that I have never really considered a BMW just because I am not as hands on as you and hate the idea of having to take a bike somewhere to be worked on. I sorta feel the same about Italian bikes.

MM, thanks for all the info you always provide me. but I have to admit I feel much more comfortable with the idea of a Japanese bike. The Savage is great as far as I am concerned, I just really wish I had an additional 10-15 HP with the corresponding increase in torque. I think belt drive is the way to go but I would prefer tubeless tires and maybe fuel injection.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

I think belt drive is the way to go but I would prefer tubeless tires and maybe fuel injection.

I think your right Springman .  I have Shaft drive , cast wheels , and fuel injection .

The Shaft drive is not as simple as it looks like it would be.   I like the care free Belt better too !   ;)

But as soon as the Royal Enfield 650 twin (48 hp) gets cast wheels I'm trading my V-9 in on one of them.  That will be 2 out of 3 of the good stuff .     :)
.....................................................
Let me tell ya a chain story :

I rebuilt a GS500 (45 hp) twin 2 years ago .   Part of refreshing the bike involved a new "O-ring" chain and new sprockets , they are painted and sealed now.  I sold it to a young man for his first bike and still see the young feller regularly.  I paid for half of his motorcycle safety coarse to get him started in the right direction before I'd sell it to him.   ;)
Well , he has put almost 3,000 miles on it and has yet to adjust the chain.

So  , I've been told the new "O-Ring" chains are different in a good way - than the old "You Lube Your Own" chains.   I've also been told  you don't need to lube the "O-Ring" chains ???

I'll let ya know how that works out --- if they finally get cast wheels , they been saying they are coming soon since Sept. 2019 ???  :-?

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 05/07/20 at 18:28:12

Springman:  I was a bit reluctant to buy a BMW, as you hear all kind of stories about the cost of parts and service, and how some folks have gotten lemons and are always needing repairs.  The old local guys I started hanging out with all have a lot of bike experience, and they have all had hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles with their BMW's.  After riding one or two - I learned that they are very nice bikes and the reality is they don't need a lot of service.  They are however modern and have all kind of electronic things that can go bad!  The Savage is far easier to work on, and has less things that can cause trouble.  It is not all that hard or expensive to get a noticeable power increase from the Savage....a piston, cam and a bit of head work and you may not want any other bike!

MM:  From what I understand, the O-ring chains benefit from cleaning and oiling on the outside - but the O-rings keep the lube in the chain and anything you spray on won't really get inside.  The cleaning and lubing just keeps the outside of the rollers and side plates from rusting.

So Dave , have you got an "O-Ring" chain on your Ninja ?    and How does it do ?

I sold the Ninja to buy the F800 BMW.
The original chain on the Ninja went almost 16,000 miles - but it was neglected and had some stiff links when I took it off.  No amount of cleaning or oiling could get those stiff links freed up.  The replacement chain was an O-ring chain and I only rode a few hundred miles after replacing it.  The little Ninja was 30HP and had very little torque, and it was easy on chains.

I do like bikes with belts/shafts - but if a bike came along that was appealing to me and it had a chain......I wouldn't let that stop me from buying it.  The Honda CB500F was a motorcycle I was considering as a reliable long term "me" bike that I could ride anywhere.  The idea of having a modern motorcycle that had tubeless tires in a size that is readily available, a bike that had a dealer or two in every town, and had Honda reliability was appealing to me - but the looks and crappy seat for Deb kept me from buying it.

Yep, I have heard these new o-ring chains are pretty good but you just can't beat the virtually zero maintenance belt drive. I have thought about putting some money into the S-40 for the extra power but then I think I would just be better off with a more modern bike. With the economic uncertainty caused by the corona virus I doubt another bike is my near future. The CB500 is a bike I have looked at a good bit on youtube. It is appealing.

The one bike that always seems to be available at a really reasonable price is the Ninja 500. Tubeless tires, good power, but chain drive and carbureted.

Hay ?   Isn't the Honda CB500 motor the same as the Rebel 500 ?   Fuel injected ?

............

Any modern 500 motor is going to be "Enough" HP. I would think ?
........................

I was looking at the W800 for a while .   Come to find out , its like the parallel  twins of old !    Both pistons run up and down together and take turns having power strokes.  Well on first glance this might look like a good idea , but it ain't .

What really happens is :   When the piston get to the top or bottom ... it STOPS .   Then speeds up again .   Well , that causes a lot of vibration and when both pistons do it at the same time ... its more than twice as bad !

So , now modern motors use a 270 degree crank so while one piston is stopped the other is at max speed .   So as one is beginning to slow for the end of the stroke the other one is needing to speed up from the top or bottom ... works good for both of them .  It gives all that energy somewhere to go besides to your butt and handle bar ends !   ;D

Well , thats what wrong with the W800 .  But , I wonder how the other twins are ???  :-?
............................

So yea , Royal Enfield  has figured that 270 degree stuff out and is fuel injected too .   They seem to have their gears all lined up as good as any in the world !   Now if they can get on board with loosing the inter-tubes then 48 HP is enough for a 400# machine  !!!    :)

I wouldn't discard an engine because of the duration of the crank.....you need to ride a bike to see what it feels like.  The Honda 500 engines in the Rebel and CB500's are the same engine, and they are 180 degree cranks where one piston is going up while the other is going down...they have a single balance shaft.  The Kawasaki Vulcan S has a 180 degree crank and a single counter balance shaft.  The BMW F800 series has a Rotax engine that is a 360 crank where both pistons go up/down at the same time - the engine has a counterweight and connecting rod that moves opposite the pistons to quell vibrations.  The Kawasaki W800 is a 360 degree crank duration and there is a single counterbalance shaft in the engine.  The new Triumph engines are 360 degree cranks and they have a pair of counterbalance shafts.  The new Royal Enfield 650 has a 270 degree crank with a single counterbalance shaft.

All modern engines vibrate far less than the old twins - which only had counterweight on the crank to reduce vibration.  I read that a lot of the choice for the firing order is chosen to get the correct "sound" by some manufacturers.....BMW wanted their 800 parallel twins to sound like their boxer motors, Triumph wanted their modern bikes to sound like the old ones.  Each company has engineered their bikes to reduce vibrations in a way that works with their engine.....modern bikes don't shake very much.

The choice between the Honda CB500F and the 500 Rebel really have more to do with your style of riding than price or engineering as they both have the same engine.  The Rebel is a cruiser seating style and has a 3 gallon tank and a single disc front brake....the CB500F is a naked sport touring bike with a 4.5 gallon tank and twin front discs.

I find that I am more comfortable on a bike with a standard seating position where my legs are underneath me - not out front in the cruiser seating position.  On a cruiser it feels like I have more weight on my rear end as my legs are not being supported by pegs underneath me, and my tail bone area gets tired sooner.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 05/09/20 at 07:46:17

 sound like their boxer motors

So the Boxer motor has two crank-shaft journals  @ 180 degrees, where the "V" motors have one .

In reading bike reviews is where I got the W-800 retained some "Old School" vibration .   I haven't ridden one , but my local shop has one of the Standard W-800 models for $9,999 plus shipping , prep , and tax .  They have a "Cafe" version for $6,999 / plus the other stuff  ::).   They are nice to look at --- but they have spokes  :( , they have chain  :( and they have a way to high price tag !   What they don't have is the only good part about them !  There is no cam-chain !     :)
-
Those over-head cam "V-Twins" have Two Cam Chains  :( .    I understand the appeal of the Parallel Twin over other engines , at least where over-head cam is considered.

Maybe the (for me) the ideal thing would be gear driven cam and push-rods.   but that might take me back to a 1967 Triumph ???  ;D
But I thought they had flimsy crankshafts ...  :)

I might just buy a Moto Guzzi !   with a big fuel tank ?   ;)

OK....I am up for another trip between now and the end of June.  I don't need a lot of advanced notice - so any weekend the weather cooperates is fine with me.

Trips to Robbinsville, Suches, Deals Gap, Kickstand Lodge, Copperhead Lodge, Two Wheel Inn, Blueridge Motorcycle Campground, etc. are all possible.

Restaurants, campgrounds and hotels are all starting to open up again.

Hay , I haven't been on the park-way in a long time !     Any of the places you mentioned sound good .   It's kind of a "No Loose" situation the way I see it.

I might need to wear the edges off my Savage tires this next time.   ;)

I'll get my hay done then I'll be ready !

MM....would you be willing to do Suches again?  Stew can come this time, and since he has to drive up on Friday night after work and has to leave on Sunday so he can be back to work on Monday - it is good if we can ride somewhere close to him.

I am just getting to learn the Suches roads well and learn some nice roads that are light on traffick (Dial Road, Aska Road), and we have can ride up toward Hiawasee, and your brother Kent can come and shame us with his ability to ride a Harley chopper at sport bike speeds.

The weather for the middle 3 weeks of June looks very promising.

We can pick a weekend and if the weather turns out scary - we can move it to the next week.

Want to tentatively try for June 5,6 & 7? (I will likely arrive on the 4th).

If the weather will give me 5 days in a roll of dry weather I'll get the hay done and out of the way.   Then I'm FREE !!! for a while !  :)

Be good to see Stew again .   I'll bring the Savage next time I think ?  :-/

Unless Stew is showing up on a New Ninja !

No new Ninja  >:(.  Seriously, since putting the bikes away after Barber's in October I have only been on the bikes just a handful of times. Finally got the big house remodel projects finished late March, then life hit us hard losing Sarah and my mind hasn't been right to be out riding. Hoping I will be all good (mentally) and this will be some good therapy to get out and about for the weekend.

Not sure of Bailey will come this time.  If just me, I'll be on the Savage.

I dunno' how many people would consider hanging out with me and MM as good therapy? :-?

So lets plan on the June 4-8 or somewhere within those dates.....I may show up a day early or stay a day or two later (depends on weather).

Versey , I've got a spare room if you want it for a few days ?   :)

I'm thinking ride from here to Suches Friday , and ride back Sunday after breakfast .   Its only about 4 hours with 2 of the hours on the super-slab or 5 hours on the two lane roads.   There's not much way to cut all the interstate out , but it might be better to go through Chattanooga on I-24 + I-75 anyway (30 minutes).

I took the 25 tooth pulley off and made my speedometer right again so the 75 mph  stuff ain't like it used to be.
But !
Third gear still runs up to 60+ mph in a nice way , I've still got the 16 inch rear wheel on it.  ;)
Now 55 mph on the speedo is 58 mph on the Garmin , so that's close enough !   (6% built-in speeding).

MM:

When you come in on Friday - come into Chatsworth and I will meet you there - and we can ride over the Mountain on 52......that was a nice road and takes us into Elliay.  From there we can go up to Aska Road and Dial Road to get to Suches........we can even take a side trip on Snake Nation Road if you want!

Title: Re: Events for 2020

If I connect with yall in Suches, what are the sleeping arrangements? I don't think I want to fool with a tent, and I have the back seats out of my truck and I can easily curl up there for the night when it is time to turn in. I'm fine paying a camping fee for my big white 4DR tent.

If yall are both biking in and that makes it easier for no one to have to pack a large tent, that is all good with me.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

Stew , we are still "Social Distancing" in different tents but in one campsite.    I've got one you might like ( I want to fool with a tent ) it opens like an umbrella , claimed to sleep two but that means one and a back-pack !

Gotcha.  I need to get a new tent so I may look at one of those quick jobs that will fit me and my cot.

Title: Re: Events for 2020

I will be hauling the bike down in my little enclosed trailer again, and sleeping in it when the bike is outside.  It probably is a good idea to sleep in our own space for right now.

Since I will be with the car/trailer - I need to camp out in the parking lot area.  I kinda' like it out there as it is quiet, and away from a lot of the bikes coming in/out......but you are not allowed campfires out there.  The trailer or tent site is $15 for the first person, $7 each for additional people in the trailer/tent.

Breakfast will be available Sat/Sun morning.....dinner likely on Friday and Saturday night.  I would guess that MM and I will be eating lunch on the way in on Friday......we might be at Suches in time for the evening meal.

Stew: Any chance you can get away a bit early on Friday - or is work as busy as always?

Title: Re: Events for 2020

I could probably swing leaving work around noon or so. Is the intent to get there in time for dinner?

Work isn't so busy since I can't travel righ tnow, I am just being considerate since I have had time off lately and I will have a couple of more days off later in the month for family vacation. They are pretty cool here, I just try to be nice and not abuse it because we have a lot of freedom.

So , ??? would a 6 legged woman need Three Men ?     Some day I hope you (Stew) and Dave get to go visit the Three Twisted Sisters in Texas with me , Springman and the guys  !  ;)   Thinking of 6 female leggs and all !
..............................................................

Yea Stew , once ya get that 6 legged version out in the open then its like paying the devil himself to get it back in the bag !   ;D
..............................................................

During the April Suches trip I noticed my old 6 legged version has a few little pin holes in it.   So , I wasn't shy about getting the up-dated version.   I have several extra tents , I could bring you one of them Stew ?  I might even set it up for ya if you  promise to carry it home with ya Sunday ??  ((Standard nice tent) the old 4 main bent/spring pole kind , used only twice but put-up dry and still nice )

Don't bring anything for me. Too much trouble on a bike for sure.

I have looked at a few tent options but not sure I see anything I really like that reviews don't say either the zippers break or it leaks.  I may bring my pop-up canopy so we can just hang out under that if needed and have a fire by your tent (not in the parking lot), but just crash in the truck when it comes sleepy time.

Stew , I'm not sure you realize how small these tents pack-up ... its really no trouble to  bring an extra one ... especially when my attic storage is so full !   ;D

Its either give one away at a time thats good or put it in a yard sale latter ?   :)

I used to sleep in my truck when getting off work at 3 am and picking up my daughter from her mom's house at 8 am .   Yea its good for a nap , but ...  :( ... for more than an hour or two.
...................................................................

I was planning to camp in the parking lot so I can keep Dave awake at night snoring next to his camper ?  :-?

but

I'll bring an extra tent (easy) but I draw the line at bringing fire wood !  ::)

As usual - I have been weather watching for the upcoming weekend.

The forecast that was great a few days ago is starting to look gloomy.  My Iphone weather forecast shows rain Thursday through Sunday.  Accuweather is a bit more positive and shows a chance of thunderstorms on Saturday and a 25-30% chance of rain the other days.  The Weather Channel shows up to a 50% chance of rain each day.

Since there are no reservations required - we can just watch the weather and make a decision on going or postponing later in the week.  Maybe we can go to Robbinsville or Waynesville if the weather their is better......or maybe somewhere else?

Cutting is half the job !

I am headed south......not sure if I am headed toward Suches which has a rainy forecast for today - or to Robbinsville which has a much better forecast for the next few days.

I don't need to make a decision until I get to Alcoa to turn off the interstate, which will be around noon today.  If I go to Robbinsville it will be the Kickstand Lodge in Stecoah.

MM/Stew:  Call me to find out where I am before you leave.....if the weather is good I will stay as the Saturday/Sunday/Monday forecast is pretty good and I can just go home on Monday - if it turns out crappy and you aren't coming I will likely go home.  Maybe I will stay at Mo's for Thursday/Friday and then go to Suches for Sat/Sun.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 06/04/20 at 18:31:34

I headed north out of the Kickstand on 28 and got to Deals Gap without coming up on a single car!  With that kind of luck I figured I better keep going and I headed up the Dragon, and I was just coming up on a pickup truck when traffic came to a stop about 6 miles in.  A fellow came back and said that it would likely take 2 hours to clean up the wreck - so I turned around and when I got to Deals Gap I turned right on 129.  I stopped at the little store/gas station, and the owner said he heard that wreck had a fatality!  He told me about a nice scenic road that goes up over the mountain and connects with 28 about where the Marina is - so I took that.  I should have just kept going south on 129 - as I got into a rain shower that lasted about 4 miles.  Once back on 28 the roads became dry and there was no rain at the Kickstand, and all the bikes coming in from the south were dry.  It is so hard to anticipate and avoid these rains showers, as the roads are often in the valleys and the sky is shrouded by trees - you can't see the dark clouds coming or which direction to go to get out of them......I can remember one year Oldfeller and I would pull over and let the storm pass, then we would ride right back into it!

Tomorrow the day starts dry - but rain chances increase as the afternoon passes.  I am meeting MM in Tellico Plains at 2 - there is a very good chance we will get wet on the way back to the Kickstand Lodge.

Saturday and Sunday the rain chances are much less and we will likely stay dry.

Post by Dave on 06/06/20 at 05:00:54

MM and I were able to meet in Tellico Plains yesterday - we got into town within minutes of each other.  We had a nice ride back to Kickstand, we chose not to ride on the Cherohala Skyway as there were dark clouds and damp roads on the mountain ( I rode through them on the way to Tellico Plains).

We are headed back to Lynchburg today........MM is having trouble with his "rear end"!

Once home we will turn around and ride back to the Kickstand.....MM can tell you about his affliction!

Hard to know how many curves we rounded over the weekend - but we went looking for the curviest roads we could find!

Well I can see you are all concerned about Mike and his rear end.

When we got to the Kickstand and were sitting around, I noticed that MM's back pulley was worn out.  His belt was fine - but the teeth were worn down and were 68 little razor blades.  Knowing that we ride hard while we are here, we decided to take his Savage home yesterday and trade it for one of his Guzzi's.

We left yesterday morning before 9 to ride to Lynchburg - we took back roads and rode 240 miles and didn't get to his house until after 3 PM!

We came home on the interstate and got to Tellico Plain around 7:30, adn rode the Cherohala Skyway in the setting sun......the bugs were there to meet us!

We got to the campground just before 10PM!  We rode 484 miles!

Wow !
I just "expanded" that picture and looked at the top tooth really good .   It like 96.5% bottom then rising up to a sharp edge then falling to another really wide bottom .

I'll send a better picture after I get it off , with a white piece of paper to show contrast.

MM, how many belts did you wear out with that pulley before getting to this stage?   I know you swap stuff around between your bikes as you work on keeping one going ...... so this is a fair question.

I am just mildly curious because nobody has ever noted the aluminum rear pulley itself as being the "weakest part" before.

So far the shaft splines on the steel engine drive pulley shaft are the #1 weak item of the belt drive system.  We should all pack our engine splines with RTV red gasket stuff from our favorite gasket fixer stuff to keep our splines from bashing back & forth so freely and to LUBRICATE the splines with a stiff "solid lubricant" that is long term durable.

We also need to check the splines for wear to and re-tighten the spline nut with fresh locktite every new tire we put on our Savages.

The main drive belt gets frayed noticeably when it gets worn, so it isn't a hidden wear item at all, it is easy to spot a drive belt that is getting ready to go.

So, knowing how many belts you went through gives folks an idea of how long (approximately how many miles) it takes to wear out the Savage belt system.

...............................................

You remember that was the weak link on the 1200cc Sportster primary drive.
I believe the tapered splines system would be a lot stronger but I suspect it might cost more to make ?
............................................

At the time of that trip to Lancer's house I had really long shocks on my Savage and had the rear loaded with luggage.   So the swing-arm bounced up to center a few times .   Well , I didn't have my belt loose enough and the belt got "pulled tight" a couple times.   After I got home I noticed a few belt teeth were missing ... so I put my spare belt on and learned "how to tighten the belt to max swing-arm length.

The old belt wasn't worn ... but now I wonder ??? Did the pulley get damaged somehow ?   I'm sure being stretched to tight didn't help the bearings any either , so maybe 4 bounces of "too tight" at 70mph  is the only thing out of normal that has happened.

Neither belt has any sign of wear , only the rear aluminum pulley.

I also wonder if "Road-Grit" imbedded into the surface of the belt might have a "Sand-paper" effect ?    I'll be washing my belt every-time I wash my bike from now on !   ;D

It could be that washing your bike once a year just isn't often enough.

I suggest weekly bike washing - maybe you could make it the same night as your weekly bath!

I wish I would have grabbed the pulley and checked for wobble....maybe the pulley hub bearing has gotten a bit loose and is allowing for a lot of movement.

And doesn't everybody take their bike into the shower with them ???  :-?

From now on I think I'll share the soap with the bike.

I did get the new pulley put on Tuesday and its good and tight mounted in the wheel and all.
I'm also putting a new rear light and turn signals on but cant give the bike my attention till early next week.
The cushions have always been where they belong but I'd love to have YouzGuyz guide us through some creek crossings as soon as possible , snakes or not.
.................................

While raking hay a few weeks ago ; I raised the rake from the field but all that came up with the hydraulic lift was half the bar not the rake wheels.  So - I took the broken side off and finished raking with only one side of the big-wheel rake.   Here's a picture of the old style that broke .

So while raking with only one side I found ... it worked really GOOD !   With both sides meeting in the rear if the hay is really thick then the hay can't fit between the last set of wheels ... it can make a mess (BIG MESS).

Well , I just bought the biggest one sided rake I could find , but I had to drive 400 miles one way to get it.  There isn't no mess with only one side pushing up a roll !   ;)

Well , I also saved about $1,000.00 by going after it myself too !   But Marcia went too and we had a nice "Road-Trip" out of it !  :)

Getting back to the Savage .

I put hard bags on it and had to loose the turn signals so this is what I'm putting on ... I can't get to it till early next week but here  it is.    I'll post a picture when done.

I put a cheep one on and it wasn't bright enough so I found this one in a custom Harley rag and remembered seeing it on ebay , so armed with the information on which one to get ... all that is left to do is mount it under the fender (might take some doing ? ) .

The hard bags lend themselves to "peal-and-stick" lights of every kind if the main lights aren't bright enough , but I hope they are .

In the house they are , out in bright sunlight ??? I'll get them mounted next week and know for sure .

They look good under the fender and the old light on top being gone !  :)

I used the old turn signal mounting holes to mount the hard bags with ... used a piece of gas line (1.5" long) with a 5/16 bolt in it to hold the rear of the bags.   The front of the bags has just about a 1/2" gas hose cushion  then the bottom has the Suzuki saddle bag support behind it with a pair of Zip-Ties.   They looks almost factory good.

If you buy turn signals and stop lights at a truck stop the lights are really bright LED’s.  They need to be for a truck.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 06/19/20 at 15:56:26

I honestly believe that anything you put on the back of your motorcycle for a tail light/brake light/turn signal should be DOT approved.  So many of the cheap LED conversions are not bright enough to be seen in daylight.  The lights you can buy for $10/$15/$20/$30 are all using the small pea sized LED emitters, and no matter how many of them they stick into the light the cannot be seen in bright daylight or direct sun.

Good tail/brake lights that are DOT approved area available - but you will not find any with the turn signals built in......as there is a minimum offset distance that the turn signals are supposed to be away from the center mounted tail light.

To be really safe, I think you need to either buy a used Take Offtail/brake light from a new bike - or a quality aftermarket that will be $80 - $100 if you want bright LED's.  (Staying safe is worth that!).  And you need to mount the turn signals away from the middle of the bike where the tail light is.

If you think you are going to be OK......trade bikes with a friend on a sunny day and get back a few hundred feet as if you were a distracted car/truck driver......and see if your lights are visible when your friend uses the turn signals or brake.  And not just when you stare at them - when you are distracted and day dreaming like the driver behind you will be.

Stay Safe!

On the CMAUSA trip (32 people - 4th of July weekend) when we got to the Dragon , not even our hot-rod guys on their 1800cc GoldWings could keep up with me and Marcia on the 750cc-Guzzi .

One guy on a 107CI Harley told me he couldn't go any faster because his bike had so much HP the back tire wouldn't hold traction.   ::)
I didn't laugh in his face , but it was all I could do not to embarrass him.   At one point I was behind him ridding my brakes , so now I can tell the story about "Wearing my brakes out (ridding double) while behind a 107 Harley (ridding single) with so much HP it couldn't go any faster !"  ;)

The campground where we stayed has cabins, and the ones with bathrooms are $64 a night.

http://jasperdogwoodcabinsandrv.com/cabins/

This place is downtown in Jasper, and is nice.....but more expensive.

https://thearkhouse.com/

There may be other hotels/cabins and places on TripAdvisor or AirbNB.

The roads in the area are really fun to ride - no matter how many HP you have!

Don't go with nearly worn out tires - the roads are a bit hard on tires when it is hot and you are riding double!

The September 2nd through September 9th that MM is proposing would put us there over the Labor Day weekend.  I am not sure if that would be a desirable time to be there......or to be traveling to Arkansas.  It could be awfully crowded then, and there are a limited number of places to stay and eat in Jasper.

Last year Deb and I were there Sept 14th - 22nd.  The roads and campgrounds were nearly empty as the kids were back in school during the week - we did have some families come to the campground on the weekend.  We had no problem getting in the restaurant, the roads were low on traffic, and the weather was still really warm.

I would suggest we pick a week/weekend after Labor day....something nearer the end of September - or maybe even into October.  (The Barber Vintage Festival is October 9-11......I plan on going to that).

Last year we traveled to/from Arkansas during the week.  There was surprising little traffic by doing so, and we had no trouble getting a campground spot when we wanted to stop for the night.

The riding on the weekend days did show an increase in traffic over the weekdays - however Arkansas is not crowded and the traffic is much lighter than what we have experienced in TN/NC/GA.

The Covid19 rate in KY is pretty low as our Governor has been extremely strict and is being pretty brutal in his policies.  Arkansas is doing pretty well, and the area we are going is very rural - likely Jasper is not going to be a hot spot.  Since we don't hang around in bars, night clubs, Casino's.......I think we are going to be at a pretty low exposure rate.

We might all be in quarantine after MM gives a hug making sure we all got the same cooties.    :-?

Lancers is about as far as I can go w/out a full nights rest.  And it's a half day from there.

#18 has 3 beds, and I'd split it with you and the hammer anytime.
cpap has the snoring under control so any you hear will be MM on the porch after marcia rolls him out.   ;D

You fellers are such a "Huggable" bunch !   ;D
I've never met such a great bunch of guys !    :-*

Really  guys , I've got a 96 year old Mother-in-Law who is still healthy.   If I brought this C-19 home and gave it to Marcia then she passed it to her mom then I'd be wearing a sign around my neck the rest of my natural life saying "KILLED HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW" .

I spray my mask with 24hr. virus killer and bring the bottle with me in case it wears out before I get back home.    I'm just NOT ALLOUD to get this C-19 stuff with no excuses .   I'm the guy asking strangers "Where's your mask" and saying "That's close enough" to those without mask.
.....................................

So , Lancer ... don't be not joining us on my account ... None of us are the type to be in a crowded bar or be hanging out with the type of folks who "JUST DON'T CARE" .

Not saying Versey isn't getting a hug --- but I'll be checking his temperature first !  ;)

Mom is 88, no way am I bringing it to her.
MM, you got that little rock room in the garage, you can spend 2 weeks in there.

I told the guys at work I'm bringing a pool noodle and any time you get close enough I'm gonna give you a poke.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 07/24/20 at 21:20:38

 Pool Noodle     :-?

I'm not sure my laser temperature checker can reach that far ?    So I can see us all lined up at a fuel pump :

MM sprays the pump key pad with virus killer then fills up then hand sanitizes
Lancer wipes the same pump with a disinfection wipe and fills up then wipes his bike and hands with another wipe
Versey runs the fuel through a pool noodle then into his tank then washes his hands in the RR.
Springman pulls out some disposable gloves and fills up then trashes the gloves and heads to the RR and waits for Versey to finish up.
Steve scratches his head
Dave has Deb fill his tank for him because the line for the Ladies room has no waiting .

Then we ride 100 miles and repeat !   ::)

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by verslagen1 on 07/24/20 at 22:04:40

Nope.
1st person pulls up takes his gas cap off then goes to the rr.
2nd person repeat
3rd person repeat
4th person repeat
5th person repeat
Deb/Marcia sanitize the pump/hands then fills each tank w/no touching.
each person comes back in turn caps his bike and off he goes.

Looks to me like since MM ASKED this question HE is the one to notify the girls.  [ch128526] [ch127949] [ch128077]

I’m in the same boat with y’all, mother is 93 on Tuesday and stepdad is 98, and all of us are high risk due to age, + other things for most of us.  It good to know we all are being careful.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by springman on 07/26/20 at 10:17:54

Being careful here also. I'm at the age where I just don't recuperate or heal like I used to. I'm not too good with wearing disposable gloves but I carry a bottle of sanitizer in my car at all times and on in my jacket when I ride. Stopping for gas is really one of the most onerous things I do any more cuz it's where I feel most vulnerable.

Versy, I have my cpap now also so my snoring is under control and the darned thing has actually helped with allergies also. :)

I'm good with splitting the cabin you mention 3 ways and I'm pretty sure Hammer is also (but I'll verify with him any way). I guess we just need a definite yes or no from Lancer before making reservations.

Well, I just put new tires on the bike here at 36,436 miles, as well as a newer front rotor and slightly used pads. I may put brand new pads on before the trip. On this tire change I realized that I was previously changing the tires with way too much tread left on them. The front Shinko Tourmaster gave me between 16 and 20k miles as it hit the wear bars. The rear Shinko 712 gave me between 10 and 12k miles. I've got the mileage written down for these new tires, both Shinko 712, so I'll have more exact numbers for when these wear out. This is the first time I use the 712 on the front so we'll see how that goes.

I would like to do a bit more work on the bike prior to the trip, but it is just ridiculously hot and humid right now. :P

Deb and I have the trailer site #11 - right next door to cabin #14 that Mike and Marcia have booked.  We are arriving on the 12th and leaving on the 20th.

Jeremiah and Maureen are the new owners and have owned it since March.  He said business is brisk this year, as folks seem to be camping instead of going to populated areas.

So Verslagen, Springman, Lancer - don't wait too long to make your choice of cabin.

Hay guys

My bad , but I just noticed that #14 and # 13 are part of the same building.

There ain't no telling who might be in #13 with only a door separating us.   Number 13 only has a queen and a twin so it not enough for our 3 or 4  solo guys either .

SO

I'm moving to #34 cabin .

I'll be trucking the bike in.
Anything extra you guys need, let me know.
We have a hammer, that takes care of anything except electrical.
So I'll bring duct tape and wd40.   ;D

Post by Dave on 07/28/20 at 14:33:07

MM - I believe you did good by getting an "exclusive" cabin for 2........I bet the walls are really thin on the #13/#14 conjoined cabin.

I will be staying put in the spot I have - it is a nice spot and I can pull the trailer in/out easily.

There was a metal carport that wasn't being used for anything last year, and some guys put their bikes underneath at night.  I don't know if they are using that building for something else this year.

For those who are adventurous and don't mind getting up early - the sunrise at the Cliff House is really cool!  It is only a 15-20 minute ride from the campground - but does require getting up before dark!

We also found a good place to watch the sunset.

Here are some routes that we can take.......Jasper is part of some of these routes - or very near for a few of them.

This ride covers a lot of ground, and the section between Harrison and Eureka Springs is a 4 lane highway and a bit boring.  Eureka Springs is a cool touristy town that used to be a resort - the buildings are hanging on steep hillsides and it is a pretty fun place to explore if you like looking and shopping.
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1_gKFgWvEI3LFm3Gov-CRm7Ewcr1YkM1E&ll=36.235972490503556%2C-93.4358&z=10

This is the Pig Trail - nearly as good as the Tail of the Dragon.....much longer and the curves are farther apart.  If we decide to go to Eureka Springs this is the route I would take:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1VXHC_VFRL9Pv1Q2JGswRemzHkB8yqH_S&ll=36.02439296233436%2C-93.49478865624641&z=10

Deb and I ride the southern half of this loop by leaving Japser on 74 when we need an hour ride.  The southern half is better than the northern half - the road going north out of Jasper to Harrison has lots of traffic and it is just a very straight road that gets you to the big crowded town of Harrison.
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1vZK0xD7ZOZAmKadSTO2k8NSsqas1274a&ll=35.979762838550315%2C-93.20667799765228&z=11

When we are ready for a long ride - we need to make a loop that leaves Jasper and goes down #7 to Ola, then over to Magazine Mountain where we can go up the mountain and have lunch at the lodge on top.  From there we can go north and get on the southern end of the Pig Trail.
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1MrdAQEjTA5G92WKFa-RgMWn7RyU&ll=35.093783943272065%2C-93.02598334533836&z=10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpDlZDu-x_o

[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpDlZDu-x_o[/media]

There really are some incredible roads and scenery - the mountains are not quite as high or impressive as the Blueridge Mountains (except for Magazine Mountain).  The mountains are much older and have eroded into gentler slopes with rolling hills on top in most areas.  The riding is great - the curves are more open and the scenery is fewer forests and more farmland.

We will have no problem finding good roads to ride on.......the area is not nearly as touristy as the TN/NC area around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.  On the local roads there will be a small store about every 20 miles - about half of them have fuel.

I need a gasbuddy that will pay for the fuel along the route....as I will be getting about 9 mpg towing the camper! ;D

Our trip is really unusual for me, as most times I go somewhere to ride I end up driving in hilly country.  When I go to the TN/NC/GA area, I drive the hilly area I live (Glacier Erosion), then pass through portions of the Appalachian, Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. The entire drive is a series of uphills and downhills and the last part of the trip I usually have to drive the Tail of the Dragon and a portion of Moonshiner 28!

However when we go west to Arkansas we pass through some of the hilly Ohio River valley for the first couple of hours - but almost immediately after leaving Kentucky and getting into Indiana things become really flat.......which is something I am really not used to.  I grew up in a Glacial Moraine area in northeast Ohio, I live in a Glacial Erosion area in norther KY - I am use to living in areas that are hilly!

The area we pass through in Indian, Illinois and Arkansas is really flat farm land.  Last year when we drove through the area the farmers were burning off the harvested fields, and it looked like small cities were on fire!  When we first saw a huge cloud of black smoke in the distance we thought there was a building on fire - then later we saw some burned fields and more clouds of smoke in the distance and I got on the internet and discovered they burn fields in the fall. The land stays really flat all the way to Jasper, and only when we get near to Jasper does the land begin to get hilly.  The land in Indiana and Illinois is all planted in corn, wheat, hay, soybeans and some form of rice where they flood the fields - then when we reach the mountainous area around Jasper the farming changes to cows and chickens - the fields are much smaller and tucked into the hills, and rather than being a cash crop they are grown to feed their cows.

Make sure you have decent tires on your bike, as these roads are very similar to the roads in TN/NC/GA and they do tend to eat away at the rubber........the only motorcycle shop in the area is up in Harrison and I suspect they don't have a huge selection of tires in stock.

Thanks for the gasbuddy suggestion. I will look into it.

Cabin 27 it is then Versy. I told Steve you and he could battle it out for the big bed. I'll take the trundle being the, I won't say smallest, but the shortest of the 3.

I look forward to seeing everybody and to having some fun.

Dave, I just got new tires and front brakes so hopefully all is good. I may even get a new muffler if I can't quiet this one down just a bit. I'll also be changing the clutch push rod before the trip.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by verslagen1 on 08/03/20 at 11:44:52

I've had gas buddy on my phone for several years now.
It doesn't have what the website has...(wait a minute, let me check, nope)
put in your destination and it will tell you all fill up at the range of you vehicle. (will have to try the savage)
but you can put in a city and it will search there.
so I would plan my route and note the cities for later.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by springman on 08/03/20 at 15:13:08

Thanks for bringing this up. I have looked at the route I plan to take and because it is mainly major roads I did not worry about getting gas. However, I guess I will look at my route a bit closer and start calculating where I might want to stop for gas. Specially that since I put on the raptor petcock I have only hit reserve once and really did not notice at how many miles. I'll just plan on a gasoline break every hundred miles.

Deb and I are camping this week at Hocking Hills in Ohio, and I brought the Arkansas maps with me.  I will be putting the rides into my Garmin so that we don't get too lost while exploring.  While I was looking at the maps I began to recognize the roads and towns that we enjoyed riding on.

Deb and I will be in the first camper parking area as you come into the camp - the entrance road is a loop and you enter the campground and the road splits, and you go left up the hill......we will be in the first spot on the right.  The office for check in is at the top of the hill right next to the pool.  Last year the pool was really nice at the end of the ride, as the temperatures were up in the 90's (I am not sure if the pool will be open this year).

We should probably have some discussion about food - we have a small grill and could cook things like hot dogs/bratts/metts/sausages in enough quantity to feed everyone - hamburgers might be cumbersome as this grill is about the size of a sheet of paper.  I don't know if the campground had a public grill or if the fire rings have grills on them - if they do it will be easy to cook in larger quantities.  For breakfast I usually just have oatmeal and/or yogurt.....I don't need a big breakfast.  There are about 3 restaurants in town - however the Ozark Cafe was our favorite and the food was affordable and good.  There is a grocery store about 1/2 mile from the campground that has a nice selection and also sells fuel.

I've got a 200 cubic-inch grill I'm bring also.  not sure about propane choices (1# green or 20# bottle) .    The cabins have grills and tables too.
We might just get the "week-long" bag of charcoal for the big cooking days.   ;)
It is nice to be able to put chicken breast on the grill , close the lid , and turn it down to cook .  Then every 10 minutes or so , Brush them with BBQ sauce  till they are just falling apart when ya flip-em .   :P

I don't believe food will be a problem - it sounds like we have plenty of places to get food prepared.  The places to eat lunch while out riding are around, as most of the small markets do have a deli.

On the day we ride to Mount Magazine we will likely be eating lunch at the lodge, as it is a pretty long ride to get there and we will be arriving in time for the mid day meal.  MM has learned that I get "Hangry" if I you don't find me a place to eat by 2PM......I ride faster, pass slow cars more aggressively, and just get cranky!

I do remember the mosquito population at the campground was not overwhelming - but they are small and very sneaky.  They can bite without you noticing, and the next morning you will find the itchy bump.  The weather was warm and short sleeve shirts were mandatory for comfort - but the exposed flesh was popular with the little buggers.  They were only an issue early in the morning and in the evening (which just happens to be when we are at the campground).  Bug spray is most likely the remedy - or you can just hide in your cabin.

I like the colors better than the one I got.   That silver and brown go nice together - don't ya think ?   :)

Really , the one I ordered should be here this weekend ???  :-/

Apricate the offer .

I found two of them on line at a place in NJ for under $40.oo shipping included , and they have the extra adjustment in the middle of the cable too.

Some of the ones I saw while looking were $49.95 each ...  :-[

I'm sure they are not factory equipment , but the factory equipment one don't have 17K miles on it yet.    In all fairness , the frayed spot is where the handlebar adjuster got it.
I got a new (aftermarket) adjuster at the first sign of trouble but it was too late , that was 10,000 miles ago.
The original cable just kept stretching or the clutch was getting broken-in I don't know which ??  :-?

Back when the "Putt Putt" boys were all riding Savages and I trailered in, I would bring along spare brake pads, voltage regulator, belt, igniter and a Raptor petcock just in case anybody had some trouble.

Now that we keep riding other bikes to these events.....a tire patch kit and jumper cables is about the only thing that fits them all!

I am starting to get things lined up for the trip.  I will be putting on a new back tire this week, checking brake pads, changing oil and filter....and getting the truck and camper ready to go.

First time I needed something was the rear pulley last time I was out !

I was ordering parts for the "W" today and it occurred to me ,  These machines all have their glitches , the Guzzi's , the Harley's , and all the other bikes I've had ... except for the Savage !   I should have named it "Old Reliable" .   ;D

Last time I had an "Old Reliable" like this was a old 500 four Honda.   I just got tired of the weight and lack of power !  It didn't have the FUN-FACTOR like the savage does.

I'll bring the Guzzi as the first choice.   The cable is the first disabling item its had in 16K+ miles.    I was putting a set of  adjustable levers on it is how I found the frayed cable , good thing I found it !    :)

I'm trying to get ready just by riding the Honda and getting used to it. I will give the oil and coolant a look before I take off. Tires and brakes pads are brand new. I will probably replace the battery as it is a bit weak and previous owner told me it is about 4 years old. The Honda does have a good bit more power but just like the S40 I seem to enjoy cruising in the 70-75 mph range and the Honda does feel much more relaxed in that speed range.

I have a new addition to my "Carry Kit"

https://www.ebay.com/itm/5pcs-180cm-Motorcycle-Metal-Brake-Clutch-Line-Cable-Wire-Scooter-Handbar-Hose/132470279830?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I'll find some "Split-Bolts" to go with them.

I had plans to go to Suches this past weekend on the guzzi ... if I had not got rained out then I would have been far from home with a broken clutch cable !

One of these babies in in the saddle bag would make all the difference in the world ! :)

Since my Cafe' bike has non-standard clutch and throttle cables (I made them)......I also made a spare set of both to take with me!

Cables take very little storage room when all rolled up.

I would use wider bars if it was easy to do so.

For clutch and brake cables, I get my stuff from Venhill:
https://www.venhillusa.com/products/cable-kits-and-parts.html

I also built one throttle cable using their stuff - but I found that Teflon line bicycle casing and the stainless cable make much smoother throttle cables.  The only weird thing is stainless cable takes a special flux for the solder to stick.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by MMRanch on 08/25/20 at 18:43:38

I was exploring the possibility of going to aftermarket carbs on the "W" .   That would involve making my own cable.   I hope the carb kits work out and I don't have to make a two into one throttle cable.   The aftermarket carbs have throttle cable adjusters to pair them with.

We are getting closer - just a couple weeks.

The weather is looking pretty typical - chance for showers on Wednesday and the other days are dry.

There is a nice grocery store very near the campground - you should be able to get about any food item you need and not have to haul much of anything in.

I put a new back tire on the bike last night, ordered some brake pads and a front tire just in case I wear them out on this trip.

I just turned 17,000 miles on the F800, and it has the original brake pads and they look fine - but as Verslagen says I am going to be braking for two of us.  The back tire had 9,000 miles on it and it would not have lasted more than a couple days more, the front tire has about 8.000 miles and look like it should be fine for the week of riding.  However -  I wanted the spare parts just in case I wore something out before we are done for the week.  I don't intend doing any sportbike events - however the Pig Trail might bring out the adventuresome side!  (There will likely be a feminine voice echoing in my helmet radio if I get too festive).

The riding in Jasper is mostly casual cruising roads with nice gentle curves - the east end of the mountains have some really steep roads with very tight turns....but they aren't very long as you get down really quickly (no 13 mile long downhills like on Moonshiner 28 south of Highland, NC).  The roads really don't invite you to hustle like the Tail of the Dragon or Cherohala Skyway do - however they are full of curves and gentle hills and very fun to ride.

The area has nice riding on any style of motorcycle.

Besides
Versey , Springman and Steve could all bring dates if they wanted too.   Dave me and you are the odd ones here ... we'll probably get "Codie's" or something for bring "women" along  ;D

I'm sure the Guzzi will be just fine .   We took it on a CMAUSA ride over to the Dragon , Field-of-the-Woods , and Skyway this summer with a bunch of Harleys and Wings .   They all kept-up sometimes !   ::)     Yep , even a Guzzi can go slow if need be !  ;)
.........................................................................

So , I'm having an issue with the "W"  .    Its got some kind of Carb thingie going on.   :-?
There is a Carb control electric thing (hooked on the butterfly spindle) , an accelerator pump (works off the throttle motion) , and it sat in a shed for years.
I've got a heavy dose of sea foam in the gas that might help it " self fix "  in a few tank fulls ??? :-/

It don't want to go past 5K when barking the motor and in gear if falls flat about the same place too.

I've got the chain off now waiting on a new Blue-O-Ring chain to get here.
It should be perty with the Blue and Silver tank ?

It might see some mountains next year ?
or
I might fix and sell it for an extra buck ???    A couple thousand miles will tell the tale ?
...........................................................

If they don't clean-up , I'm thinking of getting a pair of these ...

Deb and I will be leaving in a week to head to Jasper.  On Saturday we will drive to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, then complete the drive to Jasper on Sunday, Sept. 12th.

The weather forecast has improved  and currently there is no rain threat for the entire week! (Subject to change).  Daytime temps in the middle 70's are a welcome 20 degrees cooler than when Deb and I were there last year - it was in the 90's all week!
Night and early morning temps will be in the mid 50's - so be sure to bring a jacket.

I am looking forward to a week of good riding with good friends!

Deb and I arrived at the campground and got set up - and almost immediately it started raining.  It should stop in a couple hours. When it does we are going to the Ozark Cafe for a milkshake!

I will be interesting to see if Steve can buy a bike in a day......and then head to Arkansas.  Just as you did Springman - when I get in the mood for a bike I watch for a very long time to find the right "one".  Hopefully he can find somebody with vintage parts and get his fixed......or find something that works just as well for him.  He rode a big V-Twin dresser better than anyone else I have ever rode with.

Today is Saturday and we are at the tail end of the trip.  Versy and Springman will be packing up after our Goetta and Pancake breakfast this morning, and they will be headed home.....it will take both of them 2 days of riding/driving to get home.  MM/Marcia, and Deb and I will be able to ride one more day and we will start our trip home Sunday morning.

This location was pretty much a "Mid Point" for everyone except Versy who drove about twice as far as everyone else.

The weather has been perfect with the only dampness being the morning fog that burns off by the time we get riding.  Overnight temps have been in the 60's and daytime temps are in the high 70's or low 80's - until this morning and it is currently only 52.....and the morning warm up will be a bit slow and it will be noon before it is 70 degrees.  Springman will be riding the first 60 miles across a mountaintop and will likely get a bit chilly!

The roads have been great and provided light traffic and very nice riding.  These roads are far more open than the mountain roads in the Blueridge Mountain in TN/NC and there area places  for safe passing when you do come up on slower traffic.  The pickup trucks in the area go at a speed that very often matches our speed and there is no need to pass......a few times the trucks have caught up to us!   There are sections of roads with tight curves and even tighter switchbacks that makes it impossible for passing - but with the light traffic we have been lucky enough to not get stuck behind anyone when in those spots.  There are a large number of semi trucks hauling rock and lumber on Route 7 and on Route 23 (Pig Trail) - but they drive really fast and only a couple times did we catch up to them on a hill....one pulled over and gave us room to pass and the other one was crawling up a hill and it was easy to get around.  We did come up behind a slow RV on the Pig Trail and pulled over at a Scenic View area and waited for him to get far ahead of us - but that was the only RV/Camper/Boat type vehicle and we have not been bothered by the kind of slow traffic that is so common when driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC/TN.

Yesterday afternoon when I was sitting in the campground after we ate lunch a Roadrunner bird went across the yard by our campsite - I have never seen one before but it looked exactly like the cartoon character!  I looked it up on the internet and they are in Arkansas......it was amazing how quickly it could run!

It has been a great trip!

It has indeed been a great trip. I spent last night at JOGs house and I thank him very much for a great dinner, a comfortable bed and the good company he and his wife provided. I left JOGs house at around 6:30 am as bad weather was expected in my part of town. I got home right at 10:30 after about 230 miles, just in time to take a shower and go to church. The rain started at 12:30 and has not stopped. So I stayed dry but strong winds were a nuisance for most of the ride.

Thanks guys for the fun week of riding. And than Deb and Marcia keeping your husband's under control [ch128578]. Dave and MM are lucky guys, they married way up[ch128512].

We got home about 19:00 hrs ,   with about 1150 miles on the truck for the trip.  The bike ??? I'm not sure about . It did cross 17K abut mid week ... I'll look how much past 17K tomorrow .

Traffic was light , with no jams or extra craziness.  The Colorado did good and rode nice with the weight of the bike in the back .  :)
I loaded it by Dave & Deb's camp-site where the drop-off ledge is , easy and clean. ;)

Deb and I got home about 2:00 PM on Monday.  We drove from Arkansas to eastern Missouri - then drove about 250 miles today.  We will likely spend the rest of the day unpacking, doing laundry, etc.

The motorcycle got 1,076 miles of use - the truck and trailer went 1,328 miles round trip.  The traffic was light and respectful until we got to Louisville, KY and got onto I-71.......which I lovingly call the "Hateful Highway" - there weren't any weird issues but traffic was extremely heavy and it seems like there are nearly as many semi trucks as cars traveling on this highway.

The last 2 years have shown the Arkansas weather to be drier and more predictable than the TN/NC/GA mountain weather.  Last year Deb and I were there for 7 days and got 1 rainy afternoon - this year we were gone 10 days and had no rain.....maybe we were just really lucky both years.

I enjoy riding both the Tennessee/North Carolina/Georgia area for the really tight curves and relatively slow speed fun they provide - and the Arkansas roads for the lack of traffic and more open curves and hills.  The ride that we took on Saturday along AR27 seemed like we went 40 miles with only 1 or 2 STOP signs!

Well , after mowing for 4 hours it looks like somebody lives here again !  Yea the yard is big enough to have all the Savage travelers  camp-out in it.    Marcia has the laundry caught up and she's been working ever day too.

I took the W650 for a short ride yesterday and it went "PERFECT" !   :)
so
I took it for a longer ride today !   :) :)   Its been a while since I had a bike with a "Gate" to it .   Its got a 7.5K red-line and it comes "ALIVE" about 5K.    Fifty HP and 440 pounds .  The under-bore pistons and long stroke pulls smooth at 2k also , even in high gear.
It still has the 20 year old tires so in second gear is the only one I let it wind-up in , but that was up at 70 mph really quick.  ;)

I've got tires ordered , should be here in a week or so.   A (IRC GS-11 in 3.50-19H) and a (Dunlop K70 4.00-18S) , think 1963 Triumph Bonnie.   So the rear tire is only allowed to go 112mph but the front is allowed to go to 130mph ... I vote to go with the rear tire !   ;D

It might rain Thursday ... that might be the day to get some pictures put on my computer and also on the Savage Site. ?

I have finally found some time to post photos.  I found that each year I take a few less photos.....maybe I am getting lazy or just content to live in the moment.

The Ozark Cafe was our restaurant of choice when we didn't cook in the campground.

If you didn't pay with cash and chose to use a Credit Card - they shamed you by making you use a flower pen.  Springman was the first to be victimized.

We stopped at an overlook on AR7 to take a break and enjoy the scenery.  Here is a look at the wide range of bikes on the trip.  Versy had the Savage Single, Springman had a V-Twin stuck in laterally, MMRanch had a V-Twin stuck in longitudinal, and I was riding a parallel twin.

The weather was dry all week, and the temperatures were never really too hot or too cold - but there were clouds and haze most of the week.  The clouds did make the riding pretty nice as it shielded us from gettign too much sun.

View from the overlook on Mount Magazine.

One afternoon we got touristy and took a ride up to Eureka Springs.  We ate lunch at a fancy vintage hotel and rode around the steep hills a bit.  This building was at an angle in the steep hillside and the road on the right climbs steeply up the hill.....the road on the left goes downhill.

Parking was pretty limited on the street, and we had to pay $5.00 to get a public parking space stall and we jammed all 4 bikes into the space.

One morning we got up early and went up to watch the sunrise at the Arkansas Grand Canyon.  The brightness of the sun was muted by the morning fog/haze.

Breakfast at the camper........we eased up about the social distancing between us as the week went on.  (Versy is on the left and just missed getting in the photo).

Restaurants and other businesses in town did require masks as you moved around....you could remove your mask when seated at the table.

Just in case M&MRanch gets picked to be honored by a bunch of Savages , We already started setting up some extra sleeping arrangements .

I'll be going to the air port to pick-up my young Airman the 20-something of Oct.

After that I'll be tied to something that can haul 3 people for any adventure.   He'll be here for a month , then its off to North-East California for two years.

But

That leaves two weeks between now and then.   :)

I can find some neat places to go visit for day rides !  ;)

Let us watch the weather for the days around October 15 - 18....give or take a day.

If the weather is dry enough for me to ride down, ride for a couple days and then ride home.....that could work.

If the weather is a bit iffy for the travel days - then maybe I could trailer the Cafe' bike down if there are a couple dry days in a row.

I found an article about Moto-Guzzi I will send you.  Among other things it tells what a Heron Head is.  The bottom of the head is flat without any combustion chamber......the combustion chamber is in the top of the pistons!

Dragon anyone?

The last of the good weather is likely this coming week.....I just can't sit at home and let it pass by.  Good riding weather will not return until April 2021 - nearly 5 months from now!

The Savage Cafe' bike has not been to Deals Gap at all this year - so I am loading up the Savage in the trailer and headed to visit Moe at the Kickstand Lodge early Wednesday morning.  I will arrive around noon and get some afternoon riding, then ride all day Thursday.  The weather on Friday is a bit iffy and there is a chance of some morning showers on Friday and I may not get any riding on dry roads......I will ride if I can or head home if wetness prevails.

The weather below begins on Sunday October 18 and goes through the following Saturday.  The weather is always subject to change.......adjustment will be made as necessary (the Cafe' bike is miserable to ride on wet roads, as it throws water all over me).

Well Dave ,

Does Deals Gap still have the bag of ice w/camping fees deal ?

Hope , your staying dry.   I'm guessing you brought the trailer and the Savage.   Here in Tn. we're forecast rain Friday afternoon.

Some of the CMAUSA guys are wanting to go to Yellow-Stone in May.   I think it will still be chilly in May ... but ... they are doing all the planning (the hard part) and they are bringing a truck to haul their camping gear , extra gas , and such.    Marcia don't want to go camping/ridding , but I'm working on getting to go.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 10/22/20 at 05:10:03

The rates at Deals Gap are a bit interesting - but I can understand why they have done this.  To camp in a tent is $20 a night for 1-2 persons, you get a free bag of ice daily......and you can park whatever car/truck/trailer you brought - however if you just want to park your truck and trailer it is $40 a day!  This is a result of folks hauling their bikes down to the Deals Gap Inn and parking their trailers and unloading their bikes and then riding......without getting a room or campsite.  They just don't have enough parking available to allow free parking.

The rain chances for the next few days are slight.  They promised me a 80 degree day yesterday - it never happened and I dressed a bit too light and was on the verge of being chilly all day.  I rode the Dragon a couple times, then rode down 28 all the way to GA, then rode back up 107 to Cashiers, then rode on 281 over to Sylva....then the boring 4 lane ride for 35 miles west on 74 to get to 129 to ride back up to Deals Gap.  I rode 160 miles yesterday.  (I need to find a better way to get from Sylva back to Deals Gap without the 35 mile ride on 74 to make this a better day ride).

I think today I will take the Dragon north and then go west to Telling co Plains, ride the Cherohala Skyway, then Wayah road.

The Deals Gap resort is all spiffed up and they have repainted the hotel building, the bathrooms and showers are really clean, and the folks work really hard here to keep the place clean.  Every morning they blow the leaves off the parking lot and tidy up.  The campfire circle at night has had a lively discussion ......one fellow has had problems with his Harley for two days straight.  His bike was cutting out and shutting off while riding - he took it to the dealer and it turned out his electronic key FOB has a battery that was dying.......when the bike didn't sense the FOB the engine would shut off, and then the jerk of the bike would wake up the FOB and the bike would turn back on.  Then yesterday when he got up and tried to start the battery it was dead - $260 to come pick up the bike and a $160 battery and he was back in business.....hopefully!

My pleasure!  I am getting to know these roads pretty well.  Today was able to get ride north on the Dragon and get to Tellico Plains without using a map or getting lost - then I was able to ride the Skyway and get over to Wayah road, then find 28 to ride home all without a map!  I am not using a GPS as I don't have a mount or power supply for one on the Cafe' bike.

The bike is running really well and the Michelin Pilot Activ tires are sticking to the pavement just fine and they don't seem to be wearing out quickly......maybe the lower temperatures are easier on tires than the 90+ that is normal when we come down here in summer.

I am not sure what I will ride tomorrow - but I have decided to stay and ride on Friday as the weather here will be nice.....and at home it will be cold and rainy.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 10/24/20 at 05:31:30

I got back home about 10:30 last night.....I left Deals Gap about 4:15PM.

The trip was great and I am glad I did it - the weather was great for riding, and I learned that tire wear at 60 degrees and cloudy is so much less than occurs when it is 90+ and sunny.  I rode as I normally do and I was surprised when the tires didn't get all scuffy and I had no rubber dust on the rims.......the rubber seemed to stay on the tires!

On the first day I took this photo.  I can't remember where I was....somewhere along Moonshiner 28 I believe.

This photo is a lake on Route 72 that was along the way from the Dragon over to Tellico Plains.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 10/24/20 at 05:38:56

Friday morning got to be very active at the Dragon.  While I was getting ready to go riding, a group of Porsche cars started coming down the hill and past the Deals Gap Inn.  The line just kept coming and coming and it appeared there were 100 plus bumper to bumper Porsches.....the good news is they kept going and went down 28 - anyplace they stopped would have to have a huge parking lot to hold them all.

This VW showed up - it was a creative approach to off roading.  They took a VW body and installed it on a "Side by Side" chassis.  It had a license plate on it - so I suspect they somehow convinced the Department of Motor Vehicles that is was somehow the VW with a new drive train......and was street legal.

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 10/24/20 at 05:51:12

On Friday the weather forecast was a bit iffy.....so I decided not to get too far away from Deals Gap - this decision may have cut my ride a bit short for the day.  I rode north on the Dragon, then rode the Foothill Parkway and got to ride on the new section for the first time.  The old section from 129 over to Townsend as a 45mph speed limit - the new section unfortunately has 35 and even 25mph speed limits!  The pavement is really nice for the entire 34 miles and I ended up riding about 40 mph....and on the way back I got behind a couple of sport bikes and we ended up going much faster (I stayed back far enough that if they got caught by radar.......it was not obvious that I was riding with them and going at the same speed).

Title: Re: Events for 2020
Post by Dave on 10/24/20 at 05:51:44

I then rode back south on the Dragon and stopped at Deals Gap to get a drink and take off a bit of clothing.  Unfortunately - the rain started and looking south you could see a lot of dark clouds and rain.  The rain lasted about an hour and I started to pack and get ready to go home as there was no foreseeable end to the rain.  The rain let up a bit - but the pavement was soaked and it would not dry for hours.

I got all packed up and headed north on the Dragon, and within a couple miles the pavement was dry and there was no rain!  If I had ridden north I could have gotten out of the rain and onto dry roads!  By the time I got to Lake Fontana it was sunny, dry and 75 degrees.....it was 81 when I got to Maryville!

Here is a shot of the Tree of Shame just after the rain started.  If you look to the bottom right you can see I stuck my bike in the work area to keep it dry......I didn't want to pack a wet bike into the enclosed trailer for the trip home.

The trip was definitely the right thing to do and get the last trip of 2020! The weather was in the high 50's overnight and in the 60's-70's for the day rides........it is 46 degrees and damp here today.  The forecast for the next week is cloudy and rainy and 40-60 degrees.....there likely won't be any riding here for a week!

This Covid thing is getting ridiculous. We are a country built by pioneers. When danger crops up we don't freeze up and die. We acknowledge the danger, take the necessary measures to deal with it, and move on with our lives. Covid is serious but it seems the response the government is taking is even worse.

It seems the protective hand of the Lord has been lifted off of us.   So untill we repair our (as a nation) relationship upstairs anything we do will be in vain.   Even if we do get some tempory relief with a vacine ... there will be something else come along.    I don't see the Nation coming to a revival anytime soom.

Didn't we have a record storm season in 2020 ?   Deuteronomy 4:42 tell us that in the last days , we will  be in tribulation and we will return to the Lord.  Its just a matter of time ... kind of like Jonah telling the Lord he's not going to Nivina .   ;D

MM:

Just so you know - next time it would be OK to buy the smaller cut of Pork.

I am still eating left over BBQ that you cooked in Arkansas.....this is my third sandwich this week from the leftovers!

Your a Blessed man Lancer !     :)
..............................................

Events for 2020  ain't over yet !

It got up to 50 deg. today so I took Kate over to my daughters house two towns over (90 miles / round trip) .   It was "COOL" on the way home as the sun was going down !

I'm still waiting on parts for the Savage , but I did buy an extra long (12") 1/4" drill bit - so I can cut a new clutch rod out of it ... as soon as the pusher and new pushed plate get here  ::) .
But
Both pieces were under $30.00 delivered  .   :)

MMRanch,
When I made a new longer pushrod, the old one measured .236'', or 6mm in dia. You will need to make it longer than stock if you have a extra steel plate.
The ends need to be rounded and as hard as you can get them. My first try mushroomed on the inside end and got shorter quick!
My rule for working hard steel without taking the temper out is, Never get it too hot to hold in your bare hand.

I gave up on High Speed Steel stock as it is too soft and must be hardened for this job.

Harbor freight sells lathe bit kits that include a quarter inch round M2 bit for boring bars -- I had a couple left over so I went with lathe bit M2 steel and found my perfect material for my clutch pushers.

This is a trick for you to try, drop a single round quarter inch ball bearing underneath your old stock push rod, it is suddenly now "long enough" to be shortened to fit your new pack's need.

That sound like some fine advice !
...........................

Carl , the old push rod was make out of a broken hay-rake tooth .   They are  1/4" dia. and tempered spring steel.   I might have got it too hot while cutting it.   It was mushroomed on one end when I took it out , so I knew I needed better stuff to make the next one out of.
I suspect the rod getting shorter (mushroomed) might have contributed to the rocker having to work out of its prime area leading to braking .

So

OldFeller , that idea of a bearing in the mix leaves me wondering ???
Where the ball and the pushrod meet there might need to be a dimple to keep the ball in the middle to fight the "Double-stacking" tendency .

That might be what happened to the Guzzi ?  If the ball and the rod were trying to double stack that might explain the behavior :
The ADJUSTMENT kept getting to much slack .
The FORCE to pull kept getting greater.
Even if it was only mushrooming and getting shorter a problem with increased dia. of the rod could make the clutch harder to pull. ??
.....................

So OldFeller ,

you got any ideas about keeping to ball/rod junction in good shape ?

I'll start looking for some ball bearings , I'll need one for the Savage and another for the Guzzi.
...............................................................................................

I took machine shop in trade school after the Army.   It was a 18 month class and so I've been a "Journey-man machinist ever since.   I only worked in the field long enough to find out what a dirty job it really is , but all knowledge is good to have.
So its easy to introduce some extra Carbon to steel and easy to case harden it too.   I didn't know the pushrod was going to take such a beating or I would have treated it differently.

I used oil hardening drill rod heated cherry red on a firebrick and pushed into old motor oil, works so far.
The first try was 7000 series stainless and that was the one that mushroomed.

oil hardening drill rod heated cherry red on a firebrick and pushed into old motor oil,

I just went to measure my balls  :-?

The only ones I have are  7mm (too big for the hole)  , ye - I wish that was a common problem for me .... but .... it is , what it is !  :)

I'm going with the drill bit blank too.   After I get the right length I'll harden it .  ;)

Good news !   :)

MY parts came in .    I used a piece of a 12" long / 1/4" drill bit (made for Steel cutting / not wood) to make a new push rod.    I was aiming for 48mm but hit 47.8mm after polishing the ends with 1000 grit paper.   Before the polishing I oil quenched it 5 times from bright cherry red to make it take some more carbon  , then tempered it a touch to make the brittle go away.    Its black steel so its hard to tell where the nice straw color would have shown , but I think I got close going from past experiences.

So

I put a piece of tape to mark where the outside arm would be for a 90deg. push on the rod.
Then tried the over-size length of  rod ( cutting it down little at a time) till the swing of the outside arm started pushing about at 75 degrees.
After a thin layer of form-a-gasket it should be maybe 80-82 deg. to start pushing. ?
Anyway , it will be closer than the 45.5mm rod that was in there !   :)

I should take a picture of the chain adjuster to show ya'll , Soon as it warms a little down in the shop.  ::)

MMRanch, This pushrod is for the Savage or the Guzzi?

Carl your right , having two bikes with similar problems is just to much.  I'll be taking the Guzzi to the shop after the New Year.

The Savage is ... Soo Simple, I'm doing it now.   Next week when the weather warms up.    A half dried layer of ultra grey form a gasket ,  Then the lowest tork setting on my battery drill/nut driver ... Wait a hour ... Then tork it up and finish re-assembly. [ch129303]
And the easy one will be done !  [ch128578]

I feel really SILLY for not thinking of harding the push rod , or making sure it was at the best push angle after all those measurements to discover the real clutch pack problem last year (or was that the year before ? )  :-?

I really believe that lesser of a spring is helping my cam chain to go like the Energizer Rabbit !

This chain has about 50,000 miles on it already .    Looks like its waiting on 50,000 more !
