Has anyone done a scrambler type build with the original frame? I would like to set my bike up scrambler style without a custom setup or a full build. I will probably have to drop some $$ on new front and rear suspensions but I’m not trying to spend the equivalent of another bike... BLUF - what is the most cost effective and/or creative way of getting a scrambler-ish setup on a budget?

I think without some real ingenuity you're not going to get that flat bench seat you may be looking for without at least adding to the frame. The ryca way of cutting the tubes flat is a really easy way to give yourself space to mount the seat. I'd bet most of us who have a non OEM seat shape did something of the sort. Do you have access to a grinding/cutoff wheel or a welder?

ZSteele, yes I could chop the stock frame and modify something for the seat. I should have been more specific in my question. I am looking for ways to mod the bike practically for a more dual-sport style and not just for looks. I was curious how many forum members have done scrambler builds and maybe I could find some ideas.

I did 18" wheels front and rear. And longer shocks.
To use the 18" rear, the swingarm must be modified.
This puts the steering geometry more in line with what you want.

Armen, thanks for the info! I have more questions now though.
-By “modify” the swingarm do you mean stretch it? Wouldn’t I then need a longer drive belt and rear brake cable?
-Did you do a longer front suspension also? Is the angle of the stock triple trees still ok?
-Which rear suspension did you go with?
-Did you relocate the forward controls and pegs or keep stock?

Any more info and/or pics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Looks like a ryca midcontrols bracket, modified swing arm with a big boi tire and longer rear schocks is the ticket. I think if y3pu wanted to change rake further you could try a different top triple to raise the tubes up or spring for a new front end entirely? I think cognitomoto may have options for replacing the whole tree? Theres a chart somewhere.

It's not easy by any means but RYCA gave us a pretty solid template to go by.  The hardest part IMO is getting it to look right (the stance and seat/tank/rear fender combo) and doing the mid-controls.

My bike could easily be taken to a scrambler look.  I kept the build as simple as I could (all stock mechanicals and electrical) and I documented my process pretty well in here:  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1472222031/0

I cut the swingarm brace to clear the larger wheel, then added another cross brace.
Had Woody's Wheel works build the wheels. 2.15x18 front, 2.50x18 rear.
I used the Chinese Ohlins knockoff shocks that Chris Livengood (?) tarts up and sells.
Ditched the 'chick at the crotch Doc' seating position and used a Ryca rearset bracket and some generic rear sets.
Modified lower tree to use as upper tree (borrowed the idea from a front end article in the tech session). Race Tech emulators. fork brace, Race Tech for springs.
Aluminum adjustable clip-ons. Different master cylinder. Steel braided brake line.
R-6 big brake conversion. Saw it in the marketplace section.
Kept the belt drive. Modified a Kawi front pulley. Narrowed the pulleys and belt to 1".
