Title: Horn button & start button
Post by Tacopimp on 09/18/19 at 13:49:50

Are these buttons the same, as in they are both momentary switches but can they handle the same electrical load? I removed the electrical controls on the throttle side. I have added a toggle switch for the power/kill switch. I am just wondering if I can use the horn button as the start button. I have removed the horn, so the switch is not in use. I sanded down the switch housing on the clutch side and painted it black so keeping that on the bike and would like to repurpose that button.

Thanks guys.

Pretty sure that both function off of a relay, meaning that the high voltage/amperage needed for high load devices doesn't run through the tiny contacts at the switch.  The relay is where you need to focus your question in the event that the relays are sized differently.

I don't know the answer to that.

Well you answered my question then. If the switches are the same then I can run the start button wire to the horn button because the relay for the start switch will still be used.

This sounds like a fuster cluck.

Why? It's pretty simple...

[ch127790] pimp that will work just fine

On a stock savage, the horn does not have a relay.  All current goes through the switch on the left handle bar.

I have had both switches pulled apart, at different times, for cleaning the contacts.  From what I recall, they are built the same way inside.

The original horn switch eventually failed and had to be replaced.  Too much pitting.

I stand corrected.  I have not rewired my bike and I know that youzguyz has been deeper into the electrical.  Now that you mention it, I was thinking about an aftermarket horn and remember that I would need to add a relay to the horn circuit because the stock is so small it doesn't need one.

So, Tacopimp, sounds like if all you are doing is swapping the horn wires from direct wire to the horn and reconnecting them to the two leads that go to the starter relay, then it's all the same.  Just don't cut the relay out of the circuit.

So...get on to fuster clucking those switches  8-) 8-) 8-)

I'd be checking to make sure the same gauge wire is used for the horn button and the starter button .

Thanks for all the help guys!  Seemed pretty simple and straight forward but I still wanted to get some input here!

Also I checked the wire and they seem to be the same guage. I am running new wire to the switch though anyhow.

It is safe to slightly upsize the wire if you aren't 100% positive. Never want it to be undersized.

I have some #6 gauge 60amp stove wire left over from my kitchen remodel if you need a short piece?  ;D ;D ;D ;D

So, I need a little help identifying which wires I can "swap". Does it matter?  On the start button, since it is a momentary switch is it just making a connection between the yellow/green stripe wire and the orange/white stripe wire?  Sorry, electrical sometimes trips me up.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you!!

Pic attached for clarification... maybe, lol

Go for it!   I wouldn't try to solder the wires to the switch,(damage) I'd move the wire splices back into the harness a few inches.

I definitely won't be soldering them, just going to splice them and heat shrink around them.

So it doesn't matter where I splice the wires? There is no +/- ?
