Title: Won’t idle after start
Post by Thekillerchill on 09/15/19 at 12:10:14

i Am having issues with my bike not idling. I have tried to pull out the choke, and sometimes it won’t even start with that. It’s not every time but more than not. I let her warm up and then when I get to a stop , it just dies. I got a new spark plug , adjusted the idle and had the screw turned for my carburetor. What do I do next? Mechanic will do a full service for 200, was just hoping I didn’t have to spend all that loot.  Please help.

TKC,
Make sure that you have the idle speed set high enough. That can happen if it is set too low.

If it is not the idle speed it might be a plugged pilot jet.
Whatever you do, please don't pay $200 it will be a total waste of your money, we can talk you through anything that has to be done to your bike. How long have you had the bike? Is it new or used?

There are some very knowledgeable people on this site who are very willing to help.

A clogged jet is likely, as is a failed fuel petcock.

For a failed petcock the remedy is to replace it with a genuine Yamaha Raptor unit (search the forum).

For a clogged pilot jet, you can try seafoam in the fuel tank, but from my experience the only way to clear a clogged jet is to physically remove the gum inside the orifice.

Awesome , people have suggested the petcock being the issue . It was used when I got it .

So....

In what order should I do this ?

And also thanks soooo much !?[ch129392]

If you put the petcock on prime it may solve the problem. If it does, put a genuine Yamaha raptor petcock on it.

The stock petcock is prone to failure with baffling symptoms.
I took my brand new Suzuki petcock off and replaced it as soon as I got my bike. I knew that it would give me trouble sooner or later. Warranty be darned! :)

I think it still may be an adjustment or a plugged pilot jet. Anyway, you will sort it out or the entire site may have to commit suicide. ;D

Alright , sorry I’m just wondering what site to purchase this. Idk if amazon or some part site or go to a shop and have them  order it. I found myself a mechanic , because I have not acquired the tools and confidence yet .

And I am thankful for you guys I feel like an idiot.  :-/ :-/

I'd buy from a Yamaha dealer, threr are cheap Chinese  copies sold on the net that you don't want (inlet and outlet to small ) use the number I quoted above.

Avoid the hassle of maybe getting it wrong.
Support the local economy.
Buy from a dealership.
