Title: License Plate Cracking Post by UglyBrute on 07/22/19 at 10:04:46 Has anyone else had issues with their license plate cracking? I think its due to wind resistance and the new cheap/thin plates Michigan uses now. Purchased a backplate to hopefully fix this. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by philthymike on 07/22/19 at 10:14:43 PA plates are no better. Mines cracked 1/3 of the way across. I think the vibration is the culprit. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by oldNslow on 07/22/19 at 10:47:29 It's the bike, not the plate. That plate bracket shakes like crazy. A couple of layers of duct tape on the back of the plate.Punch holes through the tape with a big phillips screwdriver, big flat washers on the bolts. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by Tocsik on 07/22/19 at 10:54:15 Definitely a known issue. It's the vibration and maybe a little bit of air pushing against it, too. Both top corners on mine are gone at the bolt holes and I have it fixed up. Example of another thread: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1414813046/9 |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/22/19 at 14:29:45 I used a license plate off a car, cleaned everything up, used Devcon five minute epoxy to add a layer of metal. Trim, install, seems to be surviving after a couple of years. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by LANCER on 07/22/19 at 14:52:02 USA a plate holder that surrounds the entire plate and use bolts on all 4 corners. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by stewmills on 07/22/19 at 15:01:10 I have an extended aluminum license plate backer that came on my bike from another state that required it for registration stickers. I took it off when I got the bike and plates cracked every time. Put it back on and no more issues with cracked plates. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by batman on 07/22/19 at 17:35:51 Had the same plate since 1996 , but use full backing plate , full front frame and bolts in all four corners. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by norm92de on 07/22/19 at 17:57:40 I'm puzzled. My plate seems to be doing just fine. I have a chrome frame and four bolts, nothing special? :) |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by batman on 07/22/19 at 18:25:59 Norm , the vibrations get heavier if you push the motor past 3,000 rpm :) |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by norm92de on 07/22/19 at 19:08:51 Of course. My normal RPM is around 4k= 62 mph or so. Around town it is limited by the speed limit. Up and down as needed. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by batman on 07/24/19 at 05:48:52 Norm ,I was joking about the you riding at 3000 rpm . but if anyone is interested, you can determine your rpm in 5th gear on a stock bike by multiplying your speed by 66.8 ex: 62 mph x 66.8 = 4,141.6 rpm. . Early 4speed bikes ,use 66.12 ex; 62 x 66.12 =4,099 .4 rpm. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by norm92de on 07/24/19 at 06:08:18 I've got a tach on my bike so the mental gymnastics is not necessary. :) |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by batman on 07/24/19 at 07:28:42 I used them to determine the speed ranges where I wanted the boosts to fall when I tuned my intake , being most of the charts list them in RPM's , and to judge proper shift points. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by Meathead on 07/26/19 at 07:57:54 Place garden hose rubber washer between license plate and frame. One for each screw. |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by zipidachimp on 07/26/19 at 22:25:04 Mine cracked last week. Took it off and fi-glassed the back of of it. So far, so good! 8-) ps; nylon fasteners! |
Title: Re: License Plate Cracking Post by Ed L. on 07/31/19 at 06:21:16 Had the same problem with cracks in my licence plate on my '02. Cut a backing plate out of some thicker aluminum sheet and installed a licence plate frame with secondary LED brake lights. |
