When fixing some other stuff on my bike I took a closer look at the rear belt pulley and it looks VERY worn. Is this normal for a bike with 30.000km on the meter (1995)

The front pulley looks ok to me and the belt is supposed to be new (installed by previous owner just before I bought it.

Wow!

I have never seen one that looks like that.....it is not normal at all and one member has 160,000 miles on his original back pulley.

Is there a lot of sand where you ride?

Are we certain that it is an LS650 pulley or something that the previous owner rigged up? That looks like one of those dune-buggy sane scoop tires!

Take a side shot of the complete pulley so we can see if it looks not-stock?

Do they use salt as a deicer on the roads in Sweden? If so, and if that bike was ridden in the winter, I wonder if your woes with that particular motorcycle are the the result of salt corrosion.

well your supposed to run a belt on that pulley not a chain.
all kidding aside from some of the close ups its more worn on one side as the teeth are thinner on the outside vs inside. maybe the tire or pulley was/is out of alignment and the belt was sliding on the pulley wearing it out faster? what does the belt itself look like?

IMO, your pulley has been subjected to some sort of abrasive media. The wear marks indicate course abrasive particles rather that a rubber belt.

Do you have any pictures of the belt?

The front pulley is made from steel, and pretty wear resistant.

The rear pulley is aluminum and it is anodized which creates a hard surface - but once you wear through the surface the underlying aluminum can wear pretty quickly.

All those scratchy marks on the bottom of the teeth are weird.......I don't know how a belt that moves linearly can make swirly scratches? (Did you use an abrasive wheel to clean the teeth?).

That does not look like a stock rear pulley. The stock rear pulley is NOT a solid disc. Could be made for a different spec belt. The wear could be from it's first applacation. It will NOT be good for your belt. Try to find a used one from a wreck, salvage yard, or e-bay.

I think my bike has the "pulley cover" or whatever the proper name for it is.

Post a picture of the whole rear wheel, and list the tire size on it. Someone may have swapped the whole wheel from a different bike. Just cause it fit does not mean it's 100% compatable.

That may be a ''pulley cover'', but the pulley is JUNK! I have over 90,00 miles on mine and live in Florida (sand all over) and it looks like new compared to yours.

I suggest you fill us on how/where you ride that is unusual....and created this situation.

And you need a replacement rear pulley, belt, and likely a front pulley. And while you are at it grab the front and rear of the back pulley, and see if it wobbles forward/back. If so...you need a new pulley hub bearing, and you might as well install the hottest new item - a double row pulley hub bearing!

I bought this used a little over 6 months ago. Since I don't have my drivers license yet I am only able to drive with one of my instructors. So far I have made two trips with it for a total of 400 miles (a little bit over 600km). I am fairly certain the rear pulley looked this way when I got it but I had no idea what to look for or inspect. Since I bought it, it has been sitting in a warm workshop and never been exposed to the elements.

There is rust and corrosion in places that shouldn't be possible. I have no idea what this bike has been exposed to but it can't have been nice.

I can take a picture of the entire rear wheel but I know the tire a discontinued Bridgestone Exedra G702 140/90-15 M/C 70S
