Title: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Armen on 07/21/19 at 09:04:34

Well, here goes.
Using the drawing DBM provided, I just cut down my first spacer. Dave gave me a few, I had one. Bought one.
So, I have 5.
Can cut them all up if there is a demand/need/want.
I'm sure they'll fit in the cheapo Priority box.
So, maybe $25 each, with shipping?
Send your original back.
Any takers?
Should this be in 'Marketlace'?
thanks,
-Armen

Yup, marketplace.

So now you have the light flywheel mod and the rear pulley spacer mod.

You need to resize your pic's to between 640x480 to 800x600.

Thanks.
Actually, Dave still has the remaining  stash of flywheels and front pulleys.
I just have the modified rear axle spacer for the double wide bearing.

Post by Dave on 07/22/19 at 03:35:19

Yep....I have the remaining lightened flywheels - and this most likely is the last of them to be machined.

Well, judging by the thunderous response to this offering, I'll prob sell these 5 and quit.
So, the new price is $25 (including postage) without sending me your old one.
thanks,
-Armen

I hate to be a dumb dumb , but what is this item good for?

I myself would like to gear a savage down. I have a ryca and on the backroads it hovers between 2-3 gears.
Chain gearing would be easy but,

I would like to keep a belt.
So that is the problem.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Armen on 07/24/19 at 04:25:45

Hey Matchless,
If you dig through Dave's posts, you'll see his documentation of the problems in the sprocket carrier. Basically, after a bunch of miles, the carrier develops play (wobble). Dave came up with one solution involving machining the carrier, and installing a shim/bushing. DragBikeMike came up with another solution involving using a double row bearing. To use the wider bearing, the left side spacer must be machined.
So, these spacers are for the bikes using the wider bearing.
Doesn't matter if you are running a belt or chain.
Make sense?

Because of the overwhelming response to the spacers, I now need people to send in the OEM spacer. I have enough to send out, but I'll need more to modify.
So, either send the stocker up front, or send it to me after you install the modified one.
Be the first kid on your block with a non-wobbly pulley!

Ordered my spacer today!

For others, here is the quick link to DBM's how to thread along with the art number of the new bearing you will need:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1561964431

Per DBM's thread, I found a suitable bearing on eBay for $16 (delivered).  The vendor is Quality Bearings Belts & Chains, Lexington, KY 40509 (www.qualitybearingsbeltsandchain.com).  The bearing is a 5305-2RS, item number 111730106826.  This is an extremely inexpensive, Chinese bearing.  A similar SKF bearing costs about $112.  Generally, I wouldn’t bite on a deal like this.  I would be skeptical of the quality (you get what you pay for).  But I figured it would be worth $16 to try the mod out.  If it works good, I might consider springing for the gold standard bearing.

Post by ohiomoto on 10/08/19 at 06:09:57

I installed mine last week.  It seems to work well.  I used a Japanese JAF bearing I found on Amazon for $24 shipped.

EDIT:  Wish I would have ordered another bearing at that price.  They are selling for $82 now!

Post by Armen on 10/08/19 at 06:14:15

Yeah, I found a NOS high quality on Ebay for $15. Very nice!
Good place to look.
Don't really trust a no-name Chinesium bearing.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by stewmills on 10/08/19 at 12:13:14

So....is the bearing in DBM's link not what I should have gotten?

Armen, do you have a link or part number to the bearing you recommend if what I ordered is not something you would recommend/trust? I'll pony up another $15 if it means the difference between junk and trustworthy.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Armen on 10/08/19 at 14:14:43

It was the last one. Just punch in the bearing code into Ebay and look for one that wasn't made by angry crippled Chinese child prison labor.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by stewmills on 10/23/19 at 19:30:02

Well...I ordered the WJB bearing and what arrived is a Chinese HBC bearing. Now I have two Chinese bearings.  Is it really that critical or is this HBC good enough for this purpose and someone that puts ~1000 miles/year on the bike?  If this HBC is junk, it'll go back as I read further that this seller tends to do this with other customers, replacing one brand for another despite what they advertised and was ordered by the customer.

Got my new spacer from Armen, snagged a Chinese double row bearing off of ebay for $16.99. Tapped the old bearing out of the hub with an appropriately sized socket and a hammer. Cleaned up the hub, threw it in the oven on 250 Fahrenheit, new bearing in the freezer, waited 45 minutes, dropped right in. Armen's spacer fits perfectly. Really easy fix for a big problem. Thanks again Armen.

Got it.

Any other parts you need to hack up while I am sending a package?  I picked up a parts bike a while back (frame, no wheels or tires, no tank, no forks) that had an engine failure due to failed tensioner. Dave has the rocker already, and I don't think I have the right tool to yank out the flywheel (or does it not necessarily require a special tool, just muscle?).

Anyhow, not sure what all is in the boxes of bits but I can dig around if you tell me what you are looking for.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Armen on 02/13/20 at 08:33:47

Miter saw (as some call it). Guard broke yesterday. Still using today and after a cut I reached to grab a board before the blade stopped. Where the guard broke off, my glove caught the blade and it pulled my hand in. So far I can move all fingers but will see hand specialist tomorrow to assess in detail all movement and nerves.

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by stewmills on 03/28/20 at 17:25:58

Got mine done today (after 11 years of ordering and holding the modified spacer and not returning the core :o ).

One comment I wanted to make is that I am at ease with my Chinese bearing (ordered twice from fleabay....received NOT what was advertised twice). Now that I pull the tire (I have done it many times before) I am reminded that the inner bearings in the wheel aren't what I was replacing, simply the bearing that carries the pulley. So...if the Chinese pulley bearing starts to act up my rear wheel isn't going to kick sideways and sling me into a ravine.

Thanks Armen.  Core will be in the mail Monday if they are open.

No worries...I am using my own clean padded envelope from home and printing a label from home so I can just dump it in the parcel box.  I am still working at the office as normal so I have t get out every day anyhow.

Yes, it is such a quick and easy swap and I can see how it will help stabilize the pulley better.

Thanks again!

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Bubba on 04/20/20 at 11:01:07

Welp, I got my new modified spacer and bearing in last week (thx Armen!) and got them installed over the weekend (thx for the write up Dragbikemike!).
Took me about 3-4 hours total. Mainly, the heat/cool part and then adjusting the belt in the pulley since I don't have much wiggle room with the larger front pulley mod.

I never did any proper measurements of the pulley deflection other than grabbing front to back on the pulley and feeling a fair amount of play but it's been that way for quite some time (25k mileage). I always figured it was play in the rubber dampers that was causing it.
I have the modified front pulley too for those of you who are interested. I was a bit concerned that might be a problem but it wasn't really.

I've only had a chance to take it out on a couple of short runs after the install but holy heck, what a difference!

Absolutely no wobble now. One thing I didn't expect was that for the longest time, whenever I would lay the bike over in some steep turns it always felt a little sloppy coming out of the turns.
I figured it was just my imagination but with the positive contact on the pulley now I realize it was probably just pulley wobble...it is actually quite a different more confident feel.

If you're considering this mod I highly recommend it if the back end of your bike feels a little squirrelly.
:)

Interesting!  I have had occasions on long sweeping high-speed corners where it felt like I was about to enter the Harley death wobble statistics book. I have always had the shim mod in my pulley, but wonder if those episodes were a result of the remaining pulley wobble?

Now that I have completed the swap I will have to pay closer attention to this next time I am out tearing up the empty town roads  8-)

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Armen on 04/20/20 at 14:20:54

Funny you say this.
Something I've been thinking about. If there is any flex in the rear axle, this setup might make the left side a bit stiffer. Locating the spacer in the new (wider) bearing, and transferring the load over a larger are of the axle might make it stiffer. I've been thinking about other bikes I could do a similar mod on.
thanks

So, Bubba, any more miles on the bike? More feedback?

Title: Re: Modified Pulley Spacer
Post by Bubba on 04/28/20 at 08:59:33

Yah, I've put some miles on it...sorry, I haven't been on in a bit...being in Denver we go from snow to 70 degrees in the span of a few hours so spring riding can be a challenge...

Anyway, I took the bike out last Sunday for about a 60 mile ride. It definitely is an big improvement with the solid pulley working with me now. I had a stretch of about 20 miles with pavement grinding going on...I hate when they do that but the end result's are worth it.
Some sweeping turns and long straightaways made me feel like the back end was finally gripping when it should.

It's interesting to me that I always presumed the rear of the bike was always going to be somewhat sloppy feeling...maybe it's just my imagination but for whatever reason it feels nice and solid now.

Thanks again Armen and I'll get the core in the mail this week for you!

No problem. Let me get it packaged up and ready and then I'll shoot you a PM or email to get the address and your PayPal. I aim to ship it out either tomorrow or Saturday. I'm in no rush so whenever you receive it just turn it when you feel like it. My bike is under the knife for the winter.

Thanks man, you'll hear from me by the end of day tomorrow!

Hey Armen, you still need our spacer up front or do you have any on hand?
I'm ready to get rid of the noise!

Hey Tocsik,
Yup, send me yours. No idea where my old stash ended up.
thanks

Well, I actually have one in stock now. If someone wants a modified spacer, contact me, I can offer this one on exchange so your bike won't be off the road while parts travel across the country.
thanks
