Title: Apollo 11
Post by WebsterMark on 07/16/19 at 05:37:33

I was nine and don't remember anything about the landing. It's been interesting to watch all the shows about the Apollo program. Nice little article below.

I watched every bit of it on a set that was probably 20" or so and every bit as grainy as the transmission from the moon.

I was in Houston. Our family was invited to another family's apartment where he was filming the the whole thing on his biggo T.V.,, well, big for the time.

I'm betting that video of the grainy T.V.picture was a mess

But I was fourteen and just spellbound watching it.

Could anything today capture the world's imagination like the landing did? I'm not sure. Maybe a face to face meeting with another lifeform, but I'm not sure in today's world that would even do it.

Check this out. The statement Nixon would have delivered if Apollo 11 could not launch off the moon. (beautiful writing by the way)

To      :      H. R. Haldeman      July 18, 1969.
From      :      Bill Safire
IN EVENT OF MOON DISASTER:

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

[ch8203]Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

There must be similar for every milestone.

I would think so. How'd you like to be the guy who writes those!

I heard the ascent engine was a chemical engine because there would be less likelihood of failure. If they could mix the chemicals, the reaction would do the rest. No need to rely on ignitors etc...    Also heard the chemical reaction was so harsh that the motors could be used only once. Meaning they used a new motor for each test until they had everything working correctly. The motor install in the LEM would have never been fired until they took off. I wonder if they had back up valves that could be manually opened in case they had some kind of electrical failure. Sort of like bump starting your bike......

I watched it... back when TV pictures were round.  ;D
Ours was a Muntz,.. with a radio and turntable built in.
300lbs of wood and tubes... ;D

Now you can carry out a 60" TV under one arm.
Amazing.

Funniest thing in old sci-fi,..
...is seeing tube TV's on space ships that have teleportation, light speed,  and artificial gravity.
;D ;D ;D

I have a relative whose a rockstar in the Science Fiction writing world. Gets asked for autographs now and then, kinda funny.

His point is with SciFi, anything's possible, but there still needs to be an element of possibility, of believability. There's a fine line between a captivating story and an outlandish one. I'm not sure how flat screens would have gone over in Star Trek for example. They always have those monitors with click buttons.

What if they had Ipads that Kirk swiped right on. Would we had thought that's outlandish when we were kids in the 70's or would we have accepted that?

They had phasers, transporters, tricorders, but still used flip phones?...

"Scotty,.. beam me down to a green skinned hottie"... ;D

Come to think of it,... Trump would fit right in on a Star Trek episode.
Crazy hair, and oddly tinted skin...
That was the alien uniform back then.
Is the Donald really an alien?...

DEPORT HIM!... ;D
