Title: Modern (Indian) Royal Enfield motorcycles
Post by DesertCat on 07/12/19 at 20:03:32

Does anyone here have any experience with the modern Royal Enfield motorcycles, made in India?  I'm really starting to like the looks of their INT650 twin.

There a very few bikes in the Cincinnati area, as the dealers are all several hours away.

The 350cc and 500cc models don't sell well around here - they look really cool but don't have enough performance to get anybody excited.  They really can't keep up with traffic on the expressways, and they are know to vibrate.

The new twins are exciting to look at - but I don't know anybody that has bought one.

The closest dealer to me is up in Phoenix (Scottsdale), a 2.5 hour drive from me.  If there was a closer dealer, I would pursue this more.

Please, no more. I'll do something stupid.  I don't need another motorcycle. Don't make me look. You know what I'm talking about. ::)

The INT650 is definitely a looker . . .    ;)

If it was belt drive I'd already have one !   :P :P :P

Does it have a kicker and a push button starter ?    :-?

I just saw that the wet weight of the INT650 is 440-460 lbs, depending upon which review you read.  That's pretty heavy for a 650.  The LS650 is only 380 lbs (wet or dry -- don't remember).

For the current "modern" bikes - that is pretty typical for a mid-sized twin.

Japanese twins in the 60's/70's were simpler and lighter - but modern bikes and all the safety systems and electric starters and big battery to run the electric starter have beefed up the twin (I would bet the electric starter, large battery and associated gears and starter clutch add 20 or 30 pounds).  Even the single cylinder, kick start Yamaha SR400 weighs 384 pounds....and the Suzuki TU250 weighs 324 pounds!

Saw them at the Motorcycle Show in February.  They look really cool for sure.  However, when I sat on it, it felt a little "cheap".  Not sure how else to explain it.  However, I did not get a chance to test drive.

After that, I did some research on test drives.  Most of what I read praised the sticker price but said the ride was less than great.  Many talked about the high "buzzy" vibrations.

Still, I think I'd take it for a ride - and you really can't beat the price.

I think the twins look fantastic.  That said, the 2000-2001 Kawasaki W650* would be my first choice for a modern Triumph, err twin.   ;)

*Still can't believe the only sold it for 2 years stateside.

=====================

Kawasaki now has the W800, a larger version of the old W650.  It's also a bit pricey.

I owned a Bonneville T100 for eleven years. Wonderful bike, smooth and relatively powerful. However it was 500# and top heavy to boot. if it ever got away from me it was quite job to haul it upright. My little Zuki is so much easier to handle for an old fart like me. And has all the power an older  gentleman needs, especially if he is trying to stay alive. ;D

Should have got a mid 70s or earlier T100 and it wouldn't weigh 500lbs.   ;D

I had a SX-650 (1971 model) , Yamaha's assure to a Triumph Bonnie .    I don't remember it being heavy .... just fast and the low end pulling of them fat pistons .   It had a 7500 red-line .

Yea , My friend on his Honda 750 could leave me going through the gears but on a 5th gear roll-on he would have to down shift two gears just to keep up !   ;D

O-YEA , the grin factor from that machine would tend to SPIN a persons perspective .
Really that was my first "World-Class" do anything bike .  :)

I would think the new endfields twins would do the same thing .  :-?

MM,
Just for the record. From Yamaha's manual, XS 650E 467# dry. As you say it didn't seem heavy, maybe low C.G.

I fitted lower handlebars to it, not so "sit up and beg" God knows why I sold it :'(.

My fillings are gone...from my Savage!!

I had a 71 TR6R Tiger.  Single carb, shifter on the right, the brake pedal on the left and high beam switch on the headlight.  It was awesome and didn't ride any worse than my LS650.  My only real complaint was that I had to work on it an hour for every hour and a half I rode it.

So , the 440# Dry / 460# wet weight of the twins is about where it should be ?

If it had Belt drive and Mag wheels I'd be thinking , "give up the Guzzi for one of them " .    Or at least go try one of them on for size !   ;)

I'm looking for some-one's ride report .

A few things would keep me from buying a RE, without looking at one:

- Dealer is 2.5 hours away
- Parts availability
- Unknown reliability
- Lack of decent website/forum to interact with other owners

Maybe after I saw one, sat on one, I may feel differently.

The price is compelling, at just $5799.
It does look vier nice and I like that it is a standard, they are in short supply but perhaps more are coming.  It's about time.
I would love to ride one to see how it feels.

Lancer , I want to know how "SMOOTH" it is when you finally get straddle of one of them .  :-?

And if the gears are really like shifting or just another one of them ... rem, rem , rem , with no real interstate gear.

This months edition of Cycle World has 2 articles that apply to this topic. One is about both of the Royal Enfield 650 s and the Second is a comparison with the R/E 650 and the Kawi W800. I know some will enjoy reading these articles on these retro twins. Enjoy !

Canuck prices;  RE 650 $8249 + fees & taxes, new W800 $9999 ! As usual, hosers get hosed! >:(

Cycle World did a comparison between the RE650  and the W800 this time , They favored the RE !  :o

Part of it was factoring in the price .     I don't understand why they didn't put a belt final drive and mag wheels on the RE650 if they want to sell bikes in america ???  :-?

So , what does Harley have going for it ... they have a single throttle body and belt drive .    Simple , yet so hard for the competition to understand ...
