I need to replace the seals on my 1995 Savage and I have purchased a threaded rod size M16 and an M16 nut that is 24mm between the flat sides. Is this the correct size for all Savage forks or could it differ from year to year?

This thread is helpful. the last posts are mine and I used a coupling with extensions. Its easy enough.

Yes but I find a lot of references to imperial and/or fractional specs but that is just greek to me. I can not obtain non metric items, and I believe most things on this bike is metric but I want to make sure a 24mm hex nu will actually work. The standard nut size for an M16 thread is 24mm but I found a forum thread suggesting that the hexagonal dimensions inside the fork of a Suzuki DR 650 is 28 or 29mm therefore I am trying to find out if all models/years of the savage forks has a 24mm inside hexagonal fit or if it differs and what other dimension that may fit.

I can confirm the m24 nut will fit inside the fork, tightly.

I can comfirm that two replacement broom handles at the Dollar store cost two dollars., and if you trim the ends pyramid shape and drive them lightly in ,as I did you can rebuild your fork seals . :)

A long extension and a few shorter ones and a bolt with two nuts tightened against each other will get you there.
Don't forget to use blue locktight on the bottom bolts as you go back together.

Still haven't got my fork legs of the bike but I managed to remove the spacer and the spring inside and I can now confirm that a threaded rod size M16 and a metric standard M16 nut that is 24mm between the parallel surfaces will fit like a glove. I made mine from 304 stainless steel and had a guy weld it for me.

In other words: If you live in Europe or ant other part of the world that use metric system, get an M16 rod and a standard nut and you should be good to go.
