Title: Talk me out of buying a SR500
Post by philthymike on 06/30/19 at 11:43:04

There's one nearby I'm going to look at in person tomorrow.
I really love these old thumpers. Where my Thumpy is my little hotrod bike the SR500 would become my restoration project.
Owner says it smokes and likely needs work on its head.

Do I really need another project or bike?

Speaking of bikes I've decided that my Ducati is going bye bye. I'll be putting the big Duck up for sale later this year.

I had to look up the SR500. No, I will not try to talk you out of it. It's a beautiful and practical bike.

SR is a tried & true thumper. With a carb, pipe, piston it will be a kickas$ little bike. Stock they whoop on a Savage. I've owned like six of them.
And they just look cool ! What year,What color ? Super easy to build and maintain.

That's like an alcoholic asking his buddy to convince him he shouldn't have another drink. You seriously think you're gonna get any of us to talk you out of buying an SR500?????
But, you're gonna hate it. So, go ahead and buy it and I'll be there tomorrow morning to pick it up and give you what you paid for it.

I hated the kick start but forgot why.

I suppose my main concern is the smoking and what it'll take to make it right. Is it hard to find parts?

The one I'm going to see is actually a 78 - black.
The chrome looks ok in the pictures.

I hear there are lots of parts, Yamaha keep the bike in production as of 2018? As the sr400.

I had a black ‘78 SR500; sold it in Hawaii when I got orders to Washington state.  I planned on sending my Goldstar off for replacing some magneto drive gears and adding a generator for a mag/dyno unit so did not think I would need it.  Should have kept it.
One of many vehicles I should have kept.

That's so sexy!
With the intention of restoration I can predict many forbidden donut moments.
Appointment is set, going to eyeball it at 7 tonight..

Hay , I've got that rear tire on my Savage now ! .

Mike ... Don't buy that SR400 .   ;D

Really , it weighs more than the S-40 , it has less power than the S-40 , it is wore out and need a lot of TLC . ,  unless your getting it for $200.oo then leave it be .
There  , If that don't keep you from getting it , then I want to ride it too , after you get it a fixed up and shinny !  ;)

You know what ... This SR500 looks just like Lancers LS-650 ... its done up the same way .

Saw the bike and having doubts now. It's much rougher than it looked in the pictures. Some bad rust spots on the frame, dents in the tank and elsewhere, spraypainted parts, recent gasket sealant around the base of the cylinder, a hole drilled in the header, rotors need grinding etc.
The more I looked the more bad I found. And the engine ran badly.
It's definitely not worth the money asked and it's going to be a big challenge to restore. It is complete though and all original except the muffler.
I need to think it over. It might be better off as a parts bike.
I don't know.

If ya got money to waste on rebuilding an old junker then do yourself a favor  and buy a new 400 to throw money at in stead of an old bike that will never be worth much.

I understand that once a bike is out of production for 10 years the factory quits making parts for them and you have to scrounge for everything.

That SR400 is a perty bike !  :)

how about a twin ?   under $6k new

So I've thought it over. The seller doesn't seem like someone you can haggle with and frankly the price is a ripoff considering how bad off the bike is. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it as is and anyone who does is stupid. They're convinced it's a valuable vintage collectible and think they'll get a big payoff for this reason alone. I'm not rich so $1800 is just too much for me while doing so much work on Thumpy.
And I'm not a sucker. Vintage old things are worth money if it's not going to take more than you pay for it to make it right again. Tongue in cheek estimate I came up with is 3 grand counting $1500 for a total paint job. I did quote the paint job too.
And this figure doesn't count the chrome too.
So 3000 is alot more than 1800. Not worth it.

I recently saw a couple of decent looking SR500s for about $2500.

I'd buy a decent priced used SR500 -- in a NY minute.

Title: Re: Talk me out of buying a SR500

I don't think finding a decent priced one is a possibility on the east coast. The hype has been bought big time.
The one I looked at that was dredged up from the ocean floor was 1800. Another in my area that's been Frankenbiked from 4 wrecks is $3k and the best one which is in mostly original good condition is $4k.
People suck way too hard on their crack pipes up this way.

There isn't a single used SR500 or SR400 in the Phoenix/Tucson area.  Oh wait, there's one SR500 that's been turned into some sort of crap bobber, probably because it was wrecked.

You know, that Royal Enfield 650 looks good.

All the ads for the ones around here say something about the bike making a great bobber.
This time next year I'll probably find all 3 bikes for sale again as roller bobber projects, all cut on, not running and missing parts.
Enough of that junk for sale here to fill a landfill. Poor old bikes.
