Soooo .. What petrol / gas are you all feeding your thumpers?

First up, where are you so that we know whether we are talking Resarch octane number or anti knock index? In most cases 90 plus octane petrol should be fine. If you are in a country where the fuel is ethanolised at 10% or more, you may have to be careful if you don't use the bike in the winter.

Right.

I try to run ethanol free 87. If I can't find a station that carries ethanol free (not that often), it's straight 87.

Have you tried running a higher octane, and what was your experience with it? (This is for everyone, not just JC).

The Savage is a low compression engine, and 87 octane is fine.  Running a higher octane is not necessary and a waste of money.

Running a "quality" fuel is nice - the "top tier" fuels have more additives that keep the fuel system and engine cleaner.  Discount fuels can have 1/4th the additives that the more expensive name brand fuels have (Shell, BP, Sunoco, etc.).

If  you have a Wiseco piston installed, they require a higher octane fuel....90+ should be fine.

Ethanol fuel runs a bit leaner than straight fuel - if your engine is jetted to run well on E10, it will run a bit richer with pure gasoline.....but maybe not enough to notice.  Fuel injection systems with oxygen sensors can adjust for this and alter the amount of fuel being used - carbs are not that sophisticated.

Junker

If the weather is "HOT" and the going is "LOW RPMs" then I run the 92+ proof stuff .

But for everyday running I find Regular 87 Octane works just fine.
So if I'm running down the interstate at 70-75 mph then 87 % is fine , but lugging through the hills on a hot day has me going for the 93% stuff.

It seems to me : I get better mpg's (58-60 mpg) running 87% at a speed of 50-55 mph. on flat ground.  :)

I agree with Dave. 87 is all this engine needs.

A engine with stock compression ratio.
I can run mine on 87 if just cruising but for spirited riding I do prefer 91 + and if at all possible I always use it.
