I have a 1987 Savage 400ls, I'm having issues with the starter motor I. e it's not working. Can anyone give me guidence on whether the 650 is a compatible part, many thanks

Nobody in the US has ever seen a 400 - but we do believe that the major engine difference is the smaller piston/cylinder, and the rod has a smaller wrist pin.

It is likely the starter motor is interchangeable.

I believe Dave is correct  , even more so if the 400 doesn't have a compression release . Perhaos you could enlighten us on that point .

Well I'd still like to no if the LS 400 has a compression release , and you need to know that cranking the starter for more than a minute or two can over heat it, which causes the field magnets to come unglued from the case and ruins it , you need to allow 15-20 minutes for it to cool in between each try , if your having trouble starting. I f the bike is tuned and running normal it should start on the first or second revolution .
