Title: Raptor Replacement
Post by LuckyLuna on 05/29/19 at 11:22:50

Going to do the petcock replacement and I had a question about how people capped the hole on the carb.

1. What type of cap did you use? I found some vinyl ones for cheap, and I found some thicker rubber ones that are like $5. Any reason the vinyl ones wouldn't work? Would they melt?

2. Do you guys use anything to hold the cap on?

I just did the raptor swap on my 2016 and used a rubber vacuum cap from the local parts place. So far, so good. I don't know about using vinyl, though. You shouldn't need to use anything to hold it in place as long as your caps are the right size you should be fine. I'm sure someone with a bit more experience will chime in, but that's just my 2 cents worth.

I would go to a dedicated Auto Parts store and purchase a small pack of vacuum caps.  They work fine, and throw a spare 1 or 2 in your tool kit for future use if the old one gets old and cracked.....or blows off.

Is the cap there to actual do anything or just prevent stuff from going into the hole?

Does that area heat up alot to where melting might be an issue on thinner plastic?

The cap i got at the hardware store was like 30 cents. The random pack from autozone was like $5 for maybe 1 or 2 caps that might fit.

The cap keeps air from entering the hole and causing the mixture to go lean.

There is some heat in the area....the cylinder gets up over 240 degrees....not sure how much of that heat makes it to the carb.

If you have a good hardware store or auto parts supplier....they may have individual caps they can sell (most likely won't be a chain store like Autozone or Home Depot)....Ace Hardware might have individual ones.

I bought the pack from the autoparts place, but I'd like some backups since everything in that pack is a differnt size

I found a screw that very lightly threaded into the hole without damage, (it don't have to screw tight, just snug), then covered the screw with a rubber nipple for cosmetics...

I use a small hose clamp, that cap is not coming off.

I went with the vaccum cap and a small black zip-tie to snug it.
