Post by Pswartz on 05/21/19 at 12:18:15

My son and a few friends went out last Saturday to another friends farm to "browse" the bike graveyard... almost made me cry ...

I just wonder if there is anything at all salvageable from those bikes... I'd like to grab the rims for a future mod to my Savage.

My son and I were looking for a "project bike" from the farm, but not sure any of what he had could even be used.

The one inside the barn is probably your best bet. I wouldn’t trust any parts off the ones in the field.

It is sad to see bikes that are trashed, unloved and forgotten - however they most likely were too broken to be worth repairing when they got banished to the farm field or barn.

Now bikes are being trashed at an alarming rate - when I watch the YouTube videos of youngsters senselessly trashing their bikes doing stunts.......or seeing/hearing them hold the throttle wide open while the engine bounces against the rev limiter - I want to give them a very hard "dope slap".  Nice bikes with thousands of potential miles of fun are just being trashed needlessly.

The "stunt riding" and wot for the sake of wot are probably "cool" in their eyes.

That 1st pic brings back memories, when I was a late teen I bought a brand new dealer left over '82 GS550 E, It was 1984 when I bought it . Had I think 43 miles on it! Black, with red & orange pinstripes. That thing would run! Kerker 4 into 1 rejetted carbs, sticky dunlops front and rear... lots of good memories

If those GS bikes are similar there is probably enough parts between them to get a running bike. With enough proficiency stubbornness and cash anything is possible. Check compression on the engines, if anything much of the parts can be sold on ebay.

Sad to see them decay like that. Hopefully one has potential.

The problem is none of those bikes will be worth the time and money you would put into getting them road worthy.  You may get lucky and find one you could get running, but then you have a lot of expensive restoration ahead of you.  I always look for runners if I'm taking on a project.

I'd be looking for tanks, seats and wheels or a complete donor bike for a project.  Check out my "2 bikes, 1 title" thread in rubber side down.

You can find running examples of these bikes pretty cheaply.

If you can find some usable cast wheels, a fuel tank, etc. that is great - but there is no reason to try and recover/restore/reuse these bikes.

Now if you can find an Excelsior or Pierce Arrow barn find - then it would be worth the effort.
