Title: Greetings from Ohio
Post by BrokeAss on 05/20/19 at 13:48:48

Bike builder/flipper and powder coater from Central Ohio. Have bought/flipped/bobbed/repaired countless Savages/S40's over the years. Currently bobbing a '96 for my son. Love these bikes for their simplicity, availability, affordability, and how dramatic the custom builds can be.

And this bike is one of the very few that looks darn sexy without a front fender.
Real men don’t need front fenders ....till it  Rains!  :P

The front fender on my son's build is trimmed down, took out the "skirt-like" sides so it looks more like a dirt bike fender. Pics tomorrow perhaps...

I noticed that you like to extend the swingarms.  Is that for aesthetics, handling, or both?  How does it ride?

Both. For one, a bobbed stock-length S40 just looks silly in my opinion - like a bulldog, tiny rear and huge front end with the rear wheel tucked right up under the rider. I loved the way the Ryca bobbers looked but hate hardtails because I and my customers actually want to ride these bikes. So I took the swingarm extensions from the CS-1 and applied them to my bobber build. On my son's bike, I took the high-pipe concept and made a custom header so the exhaust isn't pointing directly at the shock.

Ride-wise it's great, the suspension is more plush and compliant, the extended wheelbase soaks up imperfections better, and the chassis is less twitchy. That bike in the first pic of this thread also has a different drive ratio, reducing engine RPM on the highway. Between the power gains and massive weight loss, 1st gear take-offs are not affected by the change. Plus, on stock gearing, I cannot even detect the difference between 4th and 5th gears, to me the transmission "upgrade" to 5sp in the mid 90's was anything but. However, with the drive ratio change, the shift from 4th to 5th makes a very noticeable difference.

CS-1 swingarm extensions???   :-?

I've only seen them clearance

I'm not a fan of the stock ergonomics.  Partly because I'm pretty tall, but mostly I don't like feeling so heavy on the rear end of the bike.  I feel like I'm hanging off of the front end.  That's why I asked about your extensions.

I like your thinking.  I don't recall anyone extending the swingarm on here, but it makes a lot of sense.

I converted my bike into a 70's style standard and oddly enough, that "half a bike" feeling disappeared.  It still feels like a small bike, but the taller seat, mid controls, and lower front end feel completely balanced with the stock swingarm and shocks.
