Title: Lawn Mower Blades
Post by rl153 on 05/18/19 at 11:45:56

I have an old craftsman 22" self propelled lawnmower . It's set up to mulch, but I found a brand new high lift blade the right size. What will happen if I use the high lift blade when the mulch cover is still on. Will it be a problem? Thanks!

A high lift blade is intended to move a lot of air to suck the grass totally vertical for nice clean cutting and to carry clippings up and over into a bag or a hopper.

By running the mulch cover and a high lift blade, you starve the total air flow and will not get the stuff elevated up into the bag.   You also waste gasoline moving the high lift blade while not using the positive effects from it.   The engine runs a little hotter because of the extra blade resistance trying to move air with nowhere to go.

But it isn't a major sin .....

I don't use a bag, it just goes back on the ground. Isn't that what mulching is? Thanks for letting me know it's not that terrible to do.

I would get a mulching blade, but I already have this new other blade. If it doesn't hurt to use it, I'd like to try it.

I have used high lift blades in a mulching mower and the results may not have been optimal but there were no apparent ill effects.

Slow down a bit on your tractor speed and get more revolutions per foot, it will work just fine.
With all the sand down here in Florida I wear out a set of blades in 3-4 months and had to reinforce the mower deck with 1/16 inch plate steel. ;)
