Title: Rain rain go away!
Post by philthymike on 05/12/19 at 05:01:49

My bike was laid up for a month and upon fixing it yesterday it began to rain and is going to keep raining forever apparently. What is up with all the rain?
Last summer it rained pretty much every day. The fall was the same. In the winter when it didn't rain it snowed. And so far this spring it's been flooded basement every darn week. Currently Philadelphia now gets more rain than Seattle per year. WTF?

Should I start building an ark and collecting animals?

Started a little over three weeks ago.
We're Averaging almost an inch a day.
Can't mow.
Can't move dirt.
Driveway is a few days away from impassable if it doesn't dry up.

In the Cincinnati area - 2018 was the 4th wettest year since they started keeping records.  Milford has a Euro bike night the last Thursday of every month, and it 2018 there was rain or a threat of rain all year - I never made it to a single one last year - a few weeks ago I was able to the April event.

This year is starting out just as wet, and the water table must be very high in our soil - I have water seeping out of the ground in my yards and fields that makes it impossible to mow or haul firewood across those "swamps".  I almost rain out of firewood this year - I had plenty of wood that I could burn.....I just couldn't haul it out across the fields or yard to get it to the woodburner.

I am hoping for a break in the weather between Wednesday - Sunday the coming week, as I am riding down to meet MMRanch in Lynchburg on Wednesday.  Then on Thursday the two of us are riding to Robinsville, NC to ride for a couple days, and Stewmills and his brother will arrive Friday night for riding Sat/Sun.

Worst Spring I can remember for quite a while.  About mid March all the snow was finally melted and the temps were finally getting above freezing. I was praying for a day of rain  to wash the salt off the roads. Nothing. For a couple of weeks. Bikes stayed in the garage.  Then the rain started and wouldn't stop. But at least the salt is gone.

Got one short ride on each bike first week of April when the sun came out for a day or so.

Motorcycle registrations here in NY all expire at the end of April, so I got my renewals, put the stickers on the plates and the registrations in with the tool kits about the second week of the month.

Ready to go. Except that it's rained almost every day since I did that.

This morning my dog, who lives for her morning walks, regardless of the weather, refused to go. All bundled up in our raincoats, we got three houses past my driveway and she turned around, gave me her "screw this" look, and headed back home. I didn't argue.

Weatherdude just gave us a rundown of total rainfall for the year and how much it's above average.
We are a little over a foot above average and the biggest part of it has been in about the last 23 days.
Dry yesterday and today, and it's supposed to stay dry for at least into the weekend.
Otta be able to get the place mowed!

We already had 80's out here in the PacNorWest......

Changing this week tho, with my first camping trip in the new trailer coming up next weekend, ya know we have to have our normal wet sunshine stuff  ;D

I just got back from a Wednesday - Sunday trip down to TN/NC/GA.

I rode down to MM's house in Lynchburg TN on Wednesday, then we rode over to NC on the Cherohola Skyway, then up to Robinsville and we stayed at the Two Wheel Inn.  Friday at 6 AM there was some rain - but it was gone by 8 and the roads were dry by 9AM.  We had dry riding the rest of the day on Friday, and Saturday was rain free.  Sunday morning MM and I got chased home by the weather forecast and we both made it home to TN and KY dry - StewMills and his brother are riding Sunday with other friends, and they will likely get wet bikes as they trailer them home.

It was a huge blessing to get 5 ride days in a row that allowed all day riding with no wet roads!

I got to go out for a fun ride Sunday and rode to work yesterday and today though I caught some rain OMW home yesterday. Wished my front fender was on....
On Sunday I thought I’d let Thumpy tear up Wilmington DE a little bit. Took some pics of the old rust bucket too!

There’s one seriously fun little road along Brandywine creek in the city. All hairpin turns and underpasses.

Same spot

The road ends at this extremely utopian 1970s looking office building built over the creek.

Never really rode around this city before but it seems there’s a few nice areas where you don’t need a bulletproof vest still.

On Friday there was some sort of motorcycle club convention or something down the street in Marcus Hook. I watched as hundreds and hundreds of patches rode past my house all day and night. It was like watching a parade. They sure do make a show out of it. Big groups of Harleys escorted along slowly by their crossing guards who block the intersections until the group is clear regardless of the traffic light. Lots and lots of engine revving which mostly fails at distracting pedestrians from their smartphone screens as they walk and cross the streets without looking.
My such a spectacle. The uniforms. The patches. The bikes with loud music blaring. Sensory overload.

That’s not me. Today I got out early and took advantage of the generous gap between thunderstorms out on the backroads of 3 counties. Hit the twists and hills and twisty hills and made sure to take every little one laner with a Rough Road sign. Still quite a few puddles but so what what’s a little more rust and a wet beard?
During the 4 hours on those crazy little roads I saw a sum total of 3 other bikers. Except for when I had to cross some traffic choked main road then there’s bikes aplenty. Even some big groups of Harley riders that didn’t wave back. Whatever, I went about my business on the blissfully empty and fun and largely forgotten country roads with a big muddy grin and burned through an entire tank of gas with barely any sitting in traffic or getting stuck behind an SUV with an apparent top speed of 30...

All you riders out there on the main roads, you don’t know how to have fun. I get it though. There’s no one on the backroads to get the attention of. Nobody to look at you except some cows, horses and occasional giant winged creatures crossing the road. No audience for your big parade. And besides those backroads are full of unpleasantness and dangers like sharp turns you actually have to lean through and bumpy pavement.

It’s all good. Y’all do your thing and I’ll do me. The Idiots Day Parade is every day and the backroads are endless.
