Title: Online Sources for OEM Parts
Post by Bender on 05/03/19 at 08:36:02

Hey guys and gals, I am new to the site. Couldn't find a thread dedicated to this in the search, and thought it was a worthy topic.

Just bought a 2009 S40 last weekend, 14,500 miles. Right away there were a number of things I needed to replace. The fuel petcock was already bad (the seller had the vacuum line disconnected with a golf tee shoved in, always running on 'prime'), the clutch slips above 30 mph (going to try the longer pushrod Old Feller recommends), as well as change front pads and fluid, motor oil and filter, etc.

On this site some people have mentioned ronayers.com as a good source for OEM parts online. However you need to spend a minimum of $150 to get free shipping, and basic 2 week shipping to me (California) is $20.

Any of you use other sources for OEM parts online to avoid a $20 shipping fee each time? Suzukipartshouse.com seems to be the same. Some have mentioned bikebandit.com, but I dont know if it is any better?

Thanks.

It's time to address the cam chain tensioner.
Batman eliminated the pawl thousands of miles ago. No indication of that being a mistake yet.
The Versy is the most accepted approach.
You can do both.

Check your clutch indicator on the engine case.
It's possible it needs a different rod.
It's possible the clutch is polluted with friction modifiers.
Or both,

To avoid a puzzle
Draw the outline of the engine case on cardboard

Stab it where the bolts would be
Stick them in as you remove them from the engine.

Yeah, shipping is a fact of life, usually you don't have to tell someone how to game the system.

Most will give you free shipping with $99
So, buy what you need now and think about what you'll need later.
filters (air/oil), tires, brakes (every  5k), tools (that handy dandy valve lash gauge), sparky, oil (if there isn't a convenient wallyworld) gaskets (clutch cover in particular) and get all 3 lengths of the clutch throwout rod (you never know which length you have) and they're cheap.

Why don't people just buy parts from Suzuki?

cause suzuki doesn't sell parts.

Thanks for the other sources everyone. Looks like at the current moment, partsoutlaw.com has the best shipping rate, $5 to my zip code.

It makes sense to stock up on parts you know you need in order to meet the price minimum for the free shipping, I didn't think about that.

I plan on changing the cam chain tensioner as well, was gonna open the clutch cover tomorrow just to make sure a previous owner didn't already change it before I hit up Verslagen.

"cause suzuki doesn't sell parts."

True, I guess I am thinking of dealerships.

I sometimes buy from the dealer......I had ordered enough stuff from them that they knew me, and would order with just a telephone call.  A week or so later the parts would arrive, and I would drive over to pick them up and pay them.....the parts were full retail price with tax added.  A couple years ago the owners changed, the parts folks don't know me and want me to pay for the parts when I order......I have never taken the time to renew "pay when I pick it up" relationship with the new folks - I order from Bike Bandit now and pay less and get the parts just as fast - and I don't have to spend an hour driving to the dealer and back.  If I spend $100 I get free shipping.

I recently ordered from bike bandit and am very unhappy. It took over two weeks for the order to arrive and when it did all the parts were wrong. When I called they said it was a problem with the website and offered to send the correct parts.
Since I can’t wait another 2+ weeks I ordered the same parts from Babbits. I’m hoping they’ll be faster to ship and send the right parts.

Update: bike bandit sent me replacements for the wrong parts I originally received.
And these new ones are the wrong ones too  >:(
WTF?

It’s well over a month I can’t ride because one lost bolt. You think I lived in Durkadurkastan. Gotta love the Information Age....

Thanks. But my Babbitts order is already in the mail. If they got my order right I should be good to go.

Update: just checked the tracking and it’s out for delivery already. That’s fast considering it shipped Wednesday

Nearly all of the online retailers do not have Suzuki OEM factory parts in their inventory (or Yamaha, or Honda, or Guzzi, etc.).  They have to order the parts from the warehouse distributor - which is exactly the same process your Suzuki dealer will use for most parts on the Savage.  Most dealers will stock things like batteries, oil filters, air filter...maybe tires and tubes - but most of the parts will not be stocked and will have to be ordered.

If you order from an online retailer that is a dealer and has a big warehouse.....there is a chance.  Your Babbits contact is one of those places that has a larger inventory than Bike Bandit, JP Cycles, Ron Ayers, Motorcycle Superstore, etc. - and these places also stock more parts.

Thanks!
This explains why my local Suzuki dealer always tells me to order the parts myself and bring them in with the bike if I am getting something worked on.

In the old days dealers stocked a lot of repair inventory - as there were no computers or internet and it took a long time to get things ordered and delivered.  For the dirt bikes we kept a lot of the parts that would get damaged (handlebars, fenders, hand and foot controls, footpegs, fuel tanks)....and for all the models we would keep wear items like cables, sprockets, chains, filters.  Most manufacturers only made a few models that shared common parts like hand levers and cables.

Now dealers are trying not to tie up a lot of money in a parts inventory that will just sit on the shelves.....they only order repair parts when they are needed.  They only stock things they know will sell on a regular basis (oil, tires, filters, clothing, helmets, etc.).  There are so many models and they have so few parts in common - that it is impossible for a dealer to stock everything.  (As and example.....in the early 70's almost every Suzuki model used the same clutch and brake levers - the only exception I can think of was the GT750 that had a front brake lever that pulled 2 cables....now the street bikes used different levers than the cruisers and different levers from the dirt bikes.....and some of them are cables and some are hydraulic).

Parts from Babbitts came. They’re the right ones too!

Still waiting on mine from ronayers  :(

I'm eager to fix this bike so I can actually ride it for the first time, but it looks like it will be another 5 days...16 day shipping in all. Not so great for a $20 shipping charge.

I feel your pain.
And now that I can get my bike rolling again the weather forecast shows solid rain for the next 5 days  :'(

What parts did you order?  Was it something obscure that had to be shipped from Japan?

@philthymike: yeah it always seems to work that way...

@dave: I don't think so, I got the raptor Petcock, the 3 lengths of push rods, clutch cover gasket, and front brake pads.

It would not surprise me if the clutch push rods would delay things......I don't see that as anything a dealer would keep in stock.  Using them is a bit obscure (unless you are a member of this forum).

@philthymike, same thing happened to me with the rain. Just fixed my clutch this morning, and now rain for the next 3 days! And we had no rain all of April

Murhpy's law I guess. The lake that is my driveway has finally dried out enough that I can work on my bike there again and be close to tools and electricity instead of in the garage down the alleyway. I'm taking advantage of the convenience while it lasts!
