Just going through a routine check and replacement of filters and I noticed there's oil near the air filter in the intake. What could be causing this oil blowback?

My bike: So last August I purchased my first street bike, a 2006 S40, about 11000 miles (now has 12000). It's my everyday commuter (except when it sat for 3 months over winter). No mods, to my knowledge, on the bike. It's run pretty well since I've had it, with no issues.

The breather tube on the top of the motor to the air box carries oil fumes etc. every time the piston moves down. Your air box has a drain tube under the bike ,It should be checked/drained at each oil change( you may be overdue ). be sure to replace the drain plug or raw (unfiltered) air can be pulled in when the piston is moving down due to the drain being between the air filter and the carb.

The crankcase vent tube goes into the airbox and it will blow some oil mist into the air box. A little oil mist in the air box is perfectly normal, there is a drain tube on the bottom of the box for just that purpose. If you are getting a lot of oil in there, then you need to start checking for what caused it.

There's probably a few mm oil layer sitting at the bottom of the air cleaner assembly. Would this be regarded as a lot? What sort of issues would cause this?

No more than 15 miles a day, and would seldom get above 50-55

Under 60mph shouldn't give much blow-by....
Is you oil level too high?...

If someone has changed the routing of that hose, maybe that's what is going on.
I'd wipe it up, drain the puke tube underneath, and see how it acts.
Unless someone has had the head cover off and removed the wadded up scrubby oil vapor grabber. Or messed with the tube routing. Needs to be headed uphill for a bit as it leaves the engine, so oil mist can condense and drip back to the motor.
As long as you're not running it to crazy rpm before you change gears, your commute speed shouldn't be slinging oil out.

The hose does enter the air box between the filter (back side) and the carb, you may be looking at a slight accumulation of condensed oil fumes, I wouldn't be worried . If the filter is oil soaked , you need to heed JOG's advise of checking the breather hose (it should arch above the motor) and if the filter screen is in place inside the head cover.

Check tube routing.
If it's Not as should be
That's probably the problem.
Clean up the air box
Drain the puke tube
Keep an eye on it.
You have quite a few miles on it
It's not broken
It's not in danger
You'll be going into the clutch cover in a few thousand miles.
It's got twelve now.
Nobody knows when it started.
Or if the puke tube has ever been drained.
I wouldn't freak out about it.
Just monitor it.
After you are sure about the tube routing.
