Title: Transmission/clutch whine
Post by Chicagobob on 03/12/19 at 07:28:01

When I shift into first from neutral, or downshift into first while moving, my transmission or clutch makes a whining/buzzing noise, similar to throwout bearing noise in a car.  Anyone experience this?  Is it a problem?  Perhaps just a cold weather problem?  Any suggestions?

It's probably the drive belt.  Noisy thing...

Yeah, but I hear it when the bike is sitting still.

Yes.
No...not yet...I don't think so...I hope not.
Warm and cold weather for me.
Stay on the throttle.  ;)

I don't get a buzz, but my transmission whines anytime I decelerate or downshift.  Other's have noticed this too, but no one has ever had to rebuild their gearbox so it's probably not a problem.

Problem solved.  The drive belt was too tight.  With Ryca's swing arm angle, the belt tightens when a rider's weight compresses the suspension, so tension settings done with no rider are inaccurate.  Loosening the belt a little caused the noise to stop.

My wife's like-new 2012 whines but loosening the belt (it was too tight) helped a lot.
