Title: Waiting for Spring so we can ride this new build
Post by Chicagobob on 02/16/19 at 05:46:54

We just finished this Ryca build - 18" wheels front and rear, Shorai battery and electronic speedo, but can't ride it yet due to the ice and snow outside (Chicago). >:(

Good job relocating the battery and cleaning up the electric doo dads.

Now you have room for a proper air filter so you engine can breath better (The RYCA one is just toooooooo small).

I rode mine one summer without a front fender.......it sure does throw a lot of crap into your face and shoes without one.

Also, a lot of dead cows hanging on the wall there. We're a snoopy lot, aren't we.

Nice build. And I'm in Chicago tomorrow. But, probably not on a bike.

Nice job!  Any chance of a retrospective build story?

Also, do you got your electronics all set up? They're really well hidden if you do. I'd love to see some detail shots of the electronics if you got them. I'm doing a Ryca CS-1 build myself as well.

I don't have a lot of photos yet, because I can't get outdoors or under the bike easily, but my idea with the electric system was that there's a lot of weight to be saved by using a Shorai battery and locating it and the starter solenoid as close to the starter as possible.  The stock battery weights 11 lbs!  To that end, I mounted the Shorai under the swing arm with a homemade aluminum battery box, and relocated the solenoid to a splash plate between the rear downtubes.  This allowed me to shorten the heavy-gauge starter wires and hide the wiring between the frame tubes under the seat.

I like the Ryca because of the weight removed from the stock bike (more than 60 lbs), and using the Shorai saves another 9 or 10 lbs.

Here's the battery:

Here's what's above it.  The solenoid is below the rectifier, under the black aluminum plate:

Under the tarp is a BMW R Nine T Pure with a few mods, mostly to clean up the appearance and save a little weight.

Thanks.  I got it out for about six miles yesterday.  Temp was below 40F, but the bike ran well.  I'll need to sort out the idle mixture once the weather warms a little more.

The bike handled well and felt good.  Surprising top end power.

Just think how much better the top end would be.....if the air cleaner wasn't so tiny! ;)
