Title: Savage Events for 2019
Post by verslagen1 on 01/05/19 at 15:51:20

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION RIGHT UP TO THE GO DAY -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET COMPLETELY YET UNTIL IT IS OVER.     Plugging your name in to show your interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is really going plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a firm date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Past events...

Lancer Oklahoma trip

Kickstand Lodge

From here it is a short hop up to the Dragon, and to all the really neat surrounding roads we love to ride.    For East Coast beginners, this is one of the closest (and the BEST) Southeastern trip possible.   Some have argued the area is the BEST BIKING IN AMERICA and I might have to agree with them.

Still in planning...

I have a free campground in Southern Middle Tn. for Savages  (To or From) events .      Might be a "cook-out" the night of having Campers ?     ::)

...................................................

Me , Dave , Stew , and OldFeller went to "Two Wheels of Suches" Ga. last year , but it was too early in the year and the nights were still on the Chili side , and I don't mean the eating kind !   :-[

The ridding was great !    ;)

........................................................

In 2014 I went to Daytona for Bike Week and it was fun .   Camping is only $90.oo for the entire week and the fun never stops (that might be the draw-back with it ? ).   Its all Flat-Land stuff but lots to see and folks to visit with.   :)

Just so you know...it is 66 degrees and sunny today (January 7th) at the Kick Stand Lodge!

RIDES IN MARCH?

The daytime temperatures in the Suches area "can" be in the 55-70's during the day...nights can be between 25-40.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/suches-ga/30572/month/2153437?monyr=3/01/2019

Two Wheels of Suches opens on March 2nd.  I do think it would be possible to take a trip - but I don't think it could be planned more than a few days in advance.  The event most likely will have to be the sort of event where we decide a day or two before we leave - as temperatures and rainfall can vary widely.

The same weather is also applicable to the Tail of the Dragon area.....their weather might be a tad different and affected by "local" weather - but large weather trends are the same.  Riding in the area in March will be very hard to plan very far in advance.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/stecoah-township-nc/28771/month/2095926?monyr=3/01/2019

I "am" open to meeting other members in the area in March (or even February if the weather allows)......yesterday was 60, today is 61, and tomorrow is 62 at the Dragon!
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/stecoah-township-nc/28771/weather-forecast/2095926

The hotel rooms in Robbinsville at the Two Wheel Inn are very affordable and we likely can get a room without an advance reservation in February or March.

I am always in for the Two Wheels, KSL and MM trips as they are a short drive away (~3-4 hours).

We usually take a week long family vacation in May so I have to navigate around that.  Otherwise I can usually make something happen on relatively short notice and/or adapt to last minute schedule changes.  If he is not working, my little brother will probably accompany me too and ride the S40 with me on the little Ninja again.

Not sure at all about an Oklahoma trip, my wife will likely be having knee replacement surgery about then.

I would like to catch Twisted Sister if at all possible.

Also, if Dave is inviting for a ride at his place I would really like to go to that one too.

My wife's recovery is going very slowly, and I don't believe it will be possible to have a gathering at my house this year.

2020 I think we could host an event again.

As always, I am up for dragging ya'll around the back roads if you wander on down to my stomping grounds.

Last year, you were here in Mid-May.
2018 Twisted Sisters thread:

It was a bit warm, and the wild flowers were pretty much done.
If you are interested in the flowers.

Last year, the flowers peaked here around late March to early April.

Last year, the flowers peaked here around late March to early April.

Well , April 18th my son graduates from Fire-Fighter School at Good-Fellow AFB.   So , the wife and I will be in Texas on April 18th anyway .

When she rides with me we take the Guzzi (more seat room) , so ,  I'll put the Guzzi in the back of the truck and take the truck to graduation .

I want to show her the :  Stone Hinge and nice ride by the river
Alamo Spring Cafe - the Ranch Road way.
                                     The Twisted Sisters
If the "You R Lost" and or Longhorn/Buffalow/Gran Ranch Entrances shows up then  8-)

I suspect that after 3 days she'll be "Toured out" and ready to make the two day trip back home weather I'm ready or not ...

We can get our own cabin but could share it with another couple ?   Marcia may want me to check on area motels in the same price range ??  I'll know more as the time gets closer .

I haven't check the weather yet ?

So , If the Weather don't cooperate in the April time frame ... A 1000 miles ain't that far for retired folks w/long legged motorcycles and nice weather !  ;D

Stonehinge(sic) and Twisted Sisters can be done on the same day.
You went with old.indian last year on the sisters, so didn't do the dirty sister.  I'm not sure you want to do that on the guzzi with the missus on the back.   :o

"UR Lost" is easy to find if you don't know where to look.

Longhorn and Buffalo are where you find them.  I know a few places that have them.  Being there when they are in that pasture is a matter of luck.

Gran Ranch Entrance.  I presume you mean the one in the picture?  That is close to Kerrville.

Alamo Springs Cafe.  Always!!  :D

Hay !   There's Bill in the background !!  :)

Ya'll know those Hamburgers SMELL Really Good !   ;D

The chances of my/our Graduation Trip  and the Hill Country Ride  over-lapping is slim .   Also , my Son borrowed leave time to stay longer at (Christmas/New Years)  so I don't think there will be any leave in April after training.
So ,
I might be ridding to Kerrsville  after coming home with the wife ?    Either way it works out --- I wouldn't want to miss the "Hill Country Ride", if I can help it.
I'll just have to see how it works out when the time gets here ?

I was going to say that I am with Lancer, but I guess the Dave trip will have to wait. Dave, I truly hope your wife has a 100% recovery.

Going to Lancer's is a trip I would hate to miss so when he offers, ya'll take him up on it. Lancer, please tell Paula we will be praying for her.

Three Twisted Sisters!!! Count me in.

If MM has a gathering at his place, I would like to make it this time.

I just found out the Graduation I need to attend is on the 18th of April.  The details are beyond my vision at the time but I believe I'll have to be in a car the 18th. as in no truck w/bike in the back.

Contemplating..

If you plan on combining the graduation with the ride:

04/18 is a Thursday.
Ya'll usually travel to Kerrville on Saturday and Sunday (04/13-14) and leave the next Saturday.  (04/20).  Cabin would be reserved for nights of 04/14 to 04/19.

2 1/2 hour drive from Kerrville to San Angelo.  You can leave the truck/bike at the cabin and rent a car.  (Why not just leave the bike at the cabin and take the truck?)

Guys ,  I don't know what to say at this point.

How about I modify my plans around what the majority wants .  I might get to enjoy two trips to Texas this year ?     April seems like a long way off . You fellers put a trip together and I'll work around it .   The Sure thing now is :   I'll be at Good-Fellow AFB on the 17th - 19th with the wife.

I'm kinda excited about my son going into a "Career" ,  instead of just a "Job" (like I did).   I'll be glad when he gets to "lite" at a base where he'll be for more than a few month so I can plan better.    Planning with the wife makes it more "complicated" too !  ::)

I'll be keeping an eye out for how I can meet-up on this trip !  :)

Just keep me in the loop. I want in and right now the only week I cannot make it is the week we move into our new building and when that will be I do not yet know. I will be royally annoyed if I have to cancel my riding plans again because of this building like I had to last year.

On my road trip last Friday, I was on I-77 in Virginia and I passed by the Blue Ridge Parkway at Fancy Gap, VA.  The temperature was in the 30's most of the drive, and since I left at 4:30AM it was dark for a lot of the drive and the roads were very wet - but as I went through Fancy Gap and got on the south side of the mountain - the sun shown through the clouds, and I could see the entire valley covered in a thick cloud/fog layer.....with only the mountain tops poking through the clouds.  It was really surreal looking - and there was no place to pull over and look so I just pulled out my cell phone and started clicking pictures without looking......and I hoped that at least a few of the photos would turn out OK.  It is pretty amazing that they have been able to hang an interstate on the side of this mountain!

http://i68.tinypic.com/10iawjp.jpg

http://i63.tinypic.com/35becux.jpg

I looked at the weather for this part of the Blue Ridge....and the overnight temps don't get into the 50's until June......a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway shouldn't be done any sooner than that if you are sleeping in tents!

Hay That's impressive Dave !   8-)

So , June or July for a Blue Ridge ride .  No hurry on that .

I was checking the Farmers Almanac for favorable weather in south Texas

It looks like May 13 - 25 is the Riding weather , but I suspect thats past the peak desert bloom time

I'd like to check the long range weather for the area on OldFellers weather map too .   I'll try to get that done during this cold snap we're having.

Accuweather has posted their predictions for april/may...

and I'm looking at my schedule and thinking late may ain't looking too good.
A week anywhere in between april 7 and the 20th looks good to me.

Post your preferences and let's work out a schedule.

The Accuweather forecast looks good for me to leave Tn. Saturday the 13th , stay in Natchez Ms. Saturday night and get to Kerrville Sunday night.
Then do the reverse the next Saturday  morning.
I'd like to try to find company for the ride .  Two days on the road is more fun with company.
The odds of finding a ride partner with a LS-650 is slim , so does it matter what kind of machine a person shows up on ?   I might even have to find somebody on a "Harley- :-["  or maybe a "Goldwing- :"   ::)
Hay !  It could be somebody on a BMW even ?  :-?

His knees have gotten tired of so much PT. , walking everywhere , etc.   So the medic person told him to take a two-week brake but he still has to walk to the eating place and everywhere else ?  ::)

HIS knees are tired ? ?
So the medic put him on light duty ?
Did he injure or damage them them in an accident ?

If on light duty he is still walking.  Light duty does not mean he is ambulatory which means he cannot walk at all.

NO , they call it "Casual" , or as I understand it " put  off the training schedule and on stand-by" ,  for two weeks .    Knees tired of being abused.

No accident , Just the same thing the "Peace-Time" military has always done , Training without regard to knowing when  " enough is enough " .  Don't tell me you never saw this before .  ;D

Its common enough that the medical officer knew what it was and what to do automatically like it was a very common thing ...  ;)

The sense able  thing would have been :  NO "PT" , continued training  , but that has nothing to do with doing things the "Military Way".

Main thing is : I can go ridding in April now .  :)

No, not yet in the new building. We have discovered an engineering mistake regarding the elevations in relation to the sidewalks. This needs to be resolved and will delay our occupancy of the new building probably by a couple or months or so. Major headache. >:(

ya getting new equipment or moving all the old stuff ?

That one of a kind equipment might be hard to do without while your moving it ?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by springman on 02/24/19 at 18:36:17

As far as networking we are getting all new equipment. We just recently switched to a voip phone system. In the new building we are going to run one router for the voip and another one for the internet usage. We will take with us our current desktops and servers.

As far as medical equipment, we do not use any fancy or expensive equipment. What we have will make the move with us and I will have to buy some more for our increased capacity.

Unfortunately, the only thing I do not know is when the heck we will actually get to move in because of the latest delay.

Not really a Savage event , but I'm going to San Angelo this week (in the car) .   The AF son can have company now.

Anybody ever try one of those motorcycle carriers that slips into a 2" receiver hitch ?    They are rated to 600 lbs , and have a loading ramp .
Our new vehicle is big enough I think ?   Jeep Grand Cherokee .   I haven't ordered one of the carriers yet , but I'm thinking it might work ?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by MMRanch on 03/05/19 at 07:22:14

here is a picture of the 500 lb model .

The back seat of my S-10 just ain't big enough to really ride a full size person and the wife want's to show her new car to our son anyway.   If it was just me and the wife I'd want to take the S-10 ... But then again the Jeep gets 28 mpg on the road ...   :)    The S-10 has the 4.3 L engine and likes fuel better than the Jeep does.   :-/    But it pulls the cattle trailer just fine !  ;)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 03/05/19 at 09:21:49

I have never used one of those carriers - but I have seen them on the back of trucks and motorhomes.  If you don't put some kind of bracing on them, they can wobble left/right as the receiver/hitch square is a bit of a loose fit.

The hitch on the Jeep Grande Cherokee may not be rated high enough for all that weight......and/or maybe the rear suspension is not sprung heavy enough to have your 400 pound Savage back there - you won't really know until you try.  Does the Grande Cherokee have any kind of leveling suspension in the back?

It came with a 7 prong trailer plug and trailer brakes.

Those two bars on the sides are for stabilizing , I'm sure those loops on the ends of the bars are involved but I can't see it without it being in my hand. :-[

I'm having family issues so I may be iffy, but I'd still like to ride.
So if there's anyone that'd like to back out now's the time to say so.
Otherwise I plan on renting the cabin in a week or so.

So I've been in SanAnglo three days now enjoying early summer like weather ... Tn. is rainy and cold .
By time the middle of April gets here this area should feel like June in Tn.
Makes me think "a June ride in Tn might be kin to  a April ride in the middle of Texas.

I would plan to get there in the afternoon... providing there's no hitchhikers.

I've done this with a bald tire once, and it's a bit nerve racking.
I usually only ride in the rain once, maybe twice a year.
If you need to get one, you'd better have one.  As it might rain at least one day and even if it doesn't, we're likely to ford a stream or two.

I just gave the tire a good look and checked the mileage on it. It should be good for another 2 to 3 thousand miles. I will have to say that I think tires wear faster here in eastern and central Texas because of the extreme heat.

Wow, to plan to go or not is iffy for me.
Downstairs bathroom tub/shower will be torn out and replaced with a walk-in shower about that time for the Sisters.  May not know the exact start/finish date until a week before.  It all has to be complete before Paula’s knee replacement on Apr. 29 as she won’t be able to go upstairs to the shower there for weeks afterward.
I would love to get a ride in before all that happens.
For now I am keeping my name on the list until I know more precisely.
Y’all pray they get-r-done really early in April.
Thanks

With 2 out of 4 being iffy, I think this year is a nogo.

I'm sure that with saying this everything will turn around and work out 100% for all.

So what's the next event?

I was just gonna say I got my time off approved, but yes, it is contingent on nothing unexpected coming up with the building. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to see if I can meet up with Neil one of these weekends and hopefully make it a 3 or 4 day weekend.

OK, what's the next event?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 03/12/19 at 16:45:21

What dates are not working for the Texas event....and what dates would work for doing something else (or would different dates make the Texas ride work)?

MM wants to do the full length of the Blue Ridge Parkway - that needs to come a bit later in the year as it can be cold and nasty in the mountainous portions.  Traffic would be less of a problem if it is done while school is still in session, and the touristy areas need to be ridden on weekdays.  We could gather on the south end on a Sunday, ride north on Mon/Tues....then turn around and ride back on Thur/Fri.  The night time temperatures don't get into the 50's in the Virginia mountains until late May/early June.

We have talked about looking around in Arkansas (Pig Trail).  I don't know how fast that part of the country gets warm and reliably dry.

I am open to any kind of last minute event in the TN/NC/GA area around Robbinsville/Franklin/etc.  If the perfect riding weather shows up and somebody want to go with just a few days notice......I most likely could go as long as I don't have a City Council or Planning meeting (1st and 2nd Tuesdays).  The Two Wheel in is open year round, has a nice garage for the bikes, and even if it does get a bit colder at night we could still go if the daytime temps are bearable.

Post by springman on 03/12/19 at 20:13:08

I would like to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway and I also am interested in Arkansas rides. I just cannot commit until this building we are putting up is finished and we are moved in and operational. It could be another 3 months before that happens. That being said I will monitor the site to see if you all plan anything prior to July and if at the last minute I can join up with you guys I will.

No worries.  You got to do what needs done.

Guess I am just going to have to eat the deposit on those custom leather jackets and Shoei helmets with the cool artwork that was the surprise for this year.  ::)

Anybody who wants to come around these parts and follow me as I wander around the hills is welcome to do so at any time.  I'm out there just about every Saturday and Sunday and can make plans for a long weekend if given some notice.  8-)

If you want to try to target another date for a mass sabbatical here, that would be nice!  :)

Neil, when we have a weekend with good weather and I can manage to get away on a Friday I'll give you a call and see if we can meet up on that Saturday to ride together and grab a good meal together. I can ride into Austin or New Braunfels and spend the night with one of my kids and then meet you wherever on Saturday morning.

Versey ,  my Dad has been gone for 24 years now  and I still find myself wanting to share the events of my days with him !

So , enjoy the days with him you can and don't worry about the small stuff .  ;)

If we can get a Arkansas trip together , then put him on your spare bike and bring him with ya !

I just got back from San Angelo about 01:00 this morning.   On the way there we stopped at the  Arkansas welcome center and I picked up some pamphlets on Motorcycle ridding Arkansas .    I haven't looked at them yet.  :-?     but the next rainy/cold day I get I'll see what they are.

I went to the CMAUSA National Rally in ( 2016 ?)  it was at a campground called Iron-Mountain in south/western Arkansas .   Well , on the way there I passed through some really nice bike-roads.   It was a fun event and in a good area but ,
This year its in :  June 18-22, 2019

I'm guessing I probably won't be able to take off for a week until around July. In the meantime hopefully I can take a day or two off here and there.

Yes, that was a fun ride.
I wanted to do another ride but circumstances this year did not allow.
I wanted to go into Arkansas and rent a cabin/s at CMA’s Iron Mountain.  Arkansas is full of good riding routes.  This would put us in the area where there are many motorcycle routes defined by the Butler Maps.  Love those maps.  Butler is a motorcycle enthusiast publication.  The routes are ridden by bike riders and evaluated according to road type, facilities, sights, etc. etc.  The maps are nicely laminated with fan folds.  Great product.

So.....who is going to set up an Arkansas event for April or May?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by MMRanch on 03/15/19 at 12:18:18

I have ordered those two maps .

One on Arkansas and one on the Lower Smokies.

......................................

I think the late April would fit me better .   Some time in ( May ? ) I'll need to take a trip to San Angelo for a Graduation .    Don't know what date yet or even if the May time frame is for sure ???    The training schedule was interrupted and isn't rescheduled yet.
If only I could be in charge of everything my life would be so-much-easier !   ;D

............................

The "Camping Cabin" we found in Tx. has two bunk-beds but can sleep 6  , its also only $50.oo a nite .    I'd like to find one of them in the Arkansas  ridding area !

.........................................
$46.oo a day plus tax .    they are available !  :)

https://fortsmithalmarvpark.com/cabin-rentals/
.....................
$20.oo a day plus Tax - Tent Camping

http://jasperdogwoodcabinsandrv.com/map/
..........................

TeePee w/water and electricity / sleeps 4  / $30.oo day !

https://www.kettlecampground.net/sites.htm
.......................................

What about ???  a warm week (Monday - Thursday) in late April at the TeePee ?
I need a weeks notice for my part ?   :)

Why would ya need running water in a TeePee anyway ?  :-?

Wow!  I just looked at Mapquest....and getting to the Pig Trail is 12 hours of driving for me, and with stops for fuel/food/relief I betcha it is going to be a bit tough to get it all done in 1 day.  This is certainly a trip where I would put the bike on a trailer until I got to the fun stuff.

It would not surprise me that this would be a trip where my wife wanted to come along and ride on the back.....she has talked about going to the Ozarks on a vacation.

It might take several days/weeks of exploring!

If its just going to be you and me  with Deb and Marcia , then you want to plan out the Ky. Forest ride for the first of the year ?     What was the name of area again ?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 03/19/19 at 09:14:12

MM:

One of the reasons we were trying to head south.....is to find warmer weather a bit sooner.  I looked at the weather for the Danial Boone National Forest areas.....and even in April the night time temps are in the 30's and 40's (daytime temps are generally in the 60's and 70's).

I have clothing now that can keep me comfortably warm in cold weather....my wife would likely not enjoy rides below 65 degrees.

We cab postpone the AK rides until other folks can go....and squeeze in a KY ride when you and I are wiling to brave some colder weather.  The Danial Boone National Forest area is only a couple hours from my home...quite a bit farther for you.

It would be nice if you and I could find a good riding area halfway between us.  Maybe we could find a rendezvous place midway....then ride together to the good riding areas.

Well I am chompin' at the bit to go riding....soon!

I am going to watch the weather, and there may be a "surprise" ride come up in the not too distant future.

I do have cold riding gear that can keep me warm - the only issue is that tent camping is not likely and a hotel or cabin will be needed.....and it must be dry!

The Two Wheel inn has great cold weather accommodations.  It is $80 a night for double occupancy ($40 each)...and you get a garage to park your bike in.

Daytime temps are in the 60's.....it is the morning ride to the Huddle House that will be in the 40's.

I probably can go riding any day except Mon/Tue. - it will be the weather conditions that control......if a dry warm front comes through for a few days - that will be the time to go.

Yesterday I went for a 300 mile ride... most of it was 75mph interstate stuff.  It was 47 when I left.....and warmed up to 57 by the time I got home.

I discovered I have adequate clothing and wind protection to allow all day riding in those conditions and stay comfortable (provided there is no rain).

So......I believe I am up for an outing to TN/NC/GA/VA under those weather conditions (50+ and dry).

I will watch the weather conditions and see if there is a chance to go riding anytime soon.

The rates at the Two Wheel Inn are the same on weekdays or weekends, and chances are that we don't need to make any reservations in advance this early in the riding season.

The idea of a (50 deg./ 0% rain) , (60 deg./10% rain), etc . works for me all the way to (100 deg./50% rain) ... after that I'm going with the AC. !   ;D

So , ride to the area Friday , play all day Saturday , ride home Sunday ! ...
No need to bring a tent even !    Nothing needed but an address and a GPS.  :)

The actual days can vary.....Stewmills is the one locked in to riding on Saturday/Sunday.

If the weather proves to be best on Wednesday and/or Thursday....then maybe the fun can start before Friday.  Mondays and Tuesdays are also a possibility if the weather looks best on those days.

The end of this week looks pretty good in the Robbinsville area - but my wife is out of town and won't be coming home until Thursday afernoon.  I could drive down and be there to ride on Friday and Saturday, and it appears the rain will come on Sunday.

That is one of the reasons I have to trailer the Cafe' bike to rides - I have no way to haul anything on it for an extended stay.  My new bikes both have luggage (saddlebags and top box) that snap on and off with just a key, and it is nice to have a place to store things when needed.  I will be able to travel on these bikes.

Since you are new......we will cut you some slack for not knowing about the Member map - you can find it at the top of the Cafe Section.

You can use it to find members in your area.

MM/Dave,
Any proposed rides for our 'territories' in the next 4-6 weeks? I have family vacation from 4 May - 11 May and am then supposed to be back up in N-GA the following weekend of 17-19 May to ride with my friend's veterans group. Maybe we can double down and we can camp/stay together and I can ride with you all one day and them one day?

They are staying at Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville (Dave rode by there with me after we sent MM home on our last ride). I called to make reservations a few times but no one will answer the phone. They have cabins for $164 - $154/night if y'all wanted to come and us all stay there and skip the tenting to make it easier on us? My brother would likely come and the cabins say they sleep 4 max if we wanted to talk about that and splitting it 4 ways? Would probably come out to about $75-100 per person for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday night) after taxes and such.  Let me know and if that is viable I will make a reservation for us all before all sell out.

Stew , If I can get all my chores done-up and the wife's blessings then I'd love a sunny ride with a bunch of Veterans (heck - I'm one of them too !  ;))

So , your talking about splitting a room with the 3 or 4 of us ?  :-?

Dave,
Boo.  Where is the 'thumbs down' icon?

MM,
Given that Dave appears to be out, that would leave the three of us in a little cabin room split three ways. Me, you, my little brother.   Yes, these are all semi and retired Navy veterans on big fat Harley's, but a good bunch of people and welcoming to anyone. I go because my good friend from MO is in the group and it's the once a year that we get to catch up.

I had a nightmare last night.....I dreamed I was riding with a group of older guys on Harleys - and just about every time we came to a stop.....one of the guys would tip over as he could not hold the bike up.  At each stop the bike would flop over on it's side...and the rider would take a few steps away from the momentum he gained trying to slow the falling bike.

Later on I was trying to convince him the lighter Savage would be a good bike for him - and somehow he found one in Germany that was for sale and he wanted me to make the international payment for him!

Stew......if somebody in this group starts dropping their bike - don't be surprised if I turn around and start going the other way!

Now Dave, none of them dropped dead on you from heart failure -- that is your real nightmare that you haven't fully articulated out loud yet.

Motorcycle inspectors had to go to a required class this winter, where they were flat arsed TOLD to fail all motorcycles carrying noisy non-standard exhaust systems or they will lose their inspection license.

First place I approached for an inspection simply turned me away, saying "I could hear you coming, your exhaust system is leaking and your muffler is FAR too noisy, bad baffles or drilled baffles or something is non-standard with your muffler.

I got a bit indignant at that, but when I got the muffler off to reapply the heat proof joint cement again I actually  poured a pound or so of crumbled corroded eaten up baffle material out of the front chamber of the sporty muffler.   He was right.  The baffles were shot.

Phone priced a used sporty muffler or two at the shops I bought this one from, and the service guys who peddle the take offs were spending time voluntarily telling me the model and year of the Harley the mufflers belonged to.

Guess why they are doing that .....    I then looked up the letter of the law, which has NOT CHANGED its wording one jot or iota, but the original wording can be interpreted to say what the boys in DOT Inspection are trying to administratively change the motorcycle noise regs to say.

Got a good conversation from one of the service guys and there is a place in Lumberton that is more lenient on noisy mufflers, but the owner of the Savage in question says HER bike is going to be completely legal so it can be sold easily when the time comes ....   (as she does this she points over towards the stock Savage muffler propped up over in the corner of the garage by the radial arm saw).

I putt putt putt now instead of roaring like a Savage is supposed to do.   I had removed the original bracketry and heat shield mount from the OEM rig because I had ground most of it off up in the mountains, so I kept some of the Harley rig and put together a somewhat tighter package together using the stock can.   I used a regular stainless steel muffler camp off a car, as I am tired of the Hurley bike clamps not locking the sliding diameters together securely.

ALSO, check the arm the muffler mounts to.  Mine wobbled up and down due to simple wear over the years and required a new set of non-stretched non-worn high strength bolts and a hardened steel star washer to bite into the existing worn aluminum and shiny steel to get the muffler to stay steady and quit flexing the joint apart each year.

Lancer, the law as written supports them if you interpret the words like a liberal tree hugging weenie would do it.

Interpretation of a law is the responsibility of DOT and NC law enforcement, and they are in agreement acting supposedly to cut down on noisy bikes in Fayetteville NC.   I don't like it, nor do I like what shooting range regulations are doing to the local gun ranges, but what can you really do about any of it?

90 db isn't very much noise, BTW.   If somebody hit our savages with a DB meter off idle we would FAIL that test every time.   A big single is noisy, it is ......

The law is written by legislature in very generalistic terms.  The test procedures to enforce that law are written by DOT Inspection Administration.

I also feel they are unfortunately encouraging STEALERSHIP Safety Inspectors to ravage normal folks for the cost of new exhaust systems.

This is not the first time this shite has come down the pike in NC --- when I was living in Charlotte back in the 70's they did this shite back then and bikers were swapping stock exhaust systems on and off their bikes to get inspection each year.

I guess you need to move to KY if you want to raise a ruckus - there are no car or motorcycle inspections here.

I would like them to do some enforcement of mufflers on big trucks....I live 2 miles from a 4 lane highway and I hear the roar of diesel trucks continually.

Yep, no inspections in OK either.  SC stopped them years ago too.  The law in SC and OK too I think, is that so many feet behind and to the side at a 45 degree angle that the decibels cannot exceed a certain amount with the engine at idle.

I am making plans to take Lily to a boarding house down the street next month......what specifically are the rides dates/times?

I am tentatively dropping Lily off at the kennel on Wednesday, May 15th in the afternoon and begin my drive to TN/NC.....and I plan on coming home late in the day on Sunday May 19.

What I do on Wednesday night and Thursday is open for discussion.  If the weather is good I could ride the BMW down to see MM on Wednesday night and stay the night at his house - then ride with him on Thursday and end up in the Deals Gap area that night.  Then ride home late on Sunday.

If the weather proves to be bad on any of those days....I may load the bike in the trailer and just haul it down to Deals Gap on Wednesday night, and go riding alone until MM, Stew & Brother and all the Harley guys show up.  If I haul down a bike.....it might just be the Savage Cafe'.

If the weather is mostly crappy.....I likely won't come and I will wait for a better weekend to take time off work and pay to keep the dog in a kennel (or if Deb is home Lily won't need the kennel).

I have never heard of street cops doing silly things, just the DOT inspectors.    I found an inspection place that still uses reason (who shall remain a secret) but they are already somewhat "rough and ready" and already have had some issues with the NC Inspection Administration.

NC apparently sends in DOT shills to get inspections, armed with minor to major non-conformances on the bike that the inspection people at the business are supposed to test for and catch and fail you over.   This is entrapment, pure and simple.

OK, where are you planning to base yourselves out of, Kickstand or Blue Ridge or someplace else ?   Casual old people can sleep comfortably in the Kickstand bunkhouse and since they are trailering up they can bring some books and cooking gear and stuff and not go on all the rides.

This ride is tentatively a ride with Stew and his Harley Riding buddies.....how long I can stand to ride with a large group of V-Twins is unknown.  I have been on one "Poker Run" where I rode my Cafe' bike with a group of V-Twins......it was really frustrating as they rode pretty slow, and then slowed down even more for the corners!

Oldfeller:  There is likely going to be a few days in the coming months where I am going to see a good weather window down around the Kickstand Lodge/Robbinsville....and I am going to "bug out" and head down to ride for a few days.  There could be very little notice......folks with a flexible schedule are welcome to come and ride.  I likely will leave on a Wednesday evening and ride until the weather goes bad or I get tired - but I will go home on Sunday at the latest.

Most of the harley riders move along at a pretty good click. Most of the time we have so many that we will have 2 or 3 different groups split off for different rids, and we end up with a group that wants to do all the fun twisty stuff (where I go) and other groups that just want to cruise to a destination (not where I go). It's not too bad.

Thought it might work out conveniently ?

I'm sort-of the same way about the weather .

But both bikes have fenders and mud flaps .     I'll have to admit to being spoiled to that 5.5 gal fuel tank ...

The Savage still has its low seat and low center of balance to love so its still my run here and there bike.    Stopping for fuel ever 100 miles is not always an inconvenience .

Waiting on the weather report .... .... ... ...  ::)

Mapquest claims the trip is 6 hr-45 min.  I have a somewhat difficult time keeping up with their schedule when it is not interstate roads, as they just don't seem to factor in traffic well when the route goes through a lot of small towns.

I am hoping to be able to get on the highway by 11 AM.  It appears I can make the trip with just 1 stop for fuel - although I may get more fuel as an excuse to stretch my legs and get some bugs off my visor.

It is very likely the earliest I will arrive is 6:30PM....and with the chosen route it may be more like 7:30.

Here is the route I am taking......there are lots of intersections and small towns that could slow me down.  Unfortunately once I leave I-75, there really isn't any way to alter the route to make it faster.

MM:

Mapquest and the Garmin both claim it is a 7 hour trip - it would be 6 hours if I rode down on boring I-71 and played chicken with all the semi trucks.  The only part of the ride where I can't avoid riding on I-75 t is the 132 mile section between Walton and Mount Vernon KY - if I were to get off the interstate and ride on Dixie Highway it adds another hour to the trip.....and I will miss dinner!

The only way I have found that I can keep up with the time forecast that Garmin provides - is to drive 5mph over the speed limit and drive for 3 hours between stops for fuel/food/relief........that way I have gained 15 minutes to spend at the stop and stay on schedule.  I have to eat truck stop and convenient store food that is already prepared and you can grab quick and eat in the car......so I am likely going to fall a bit behind on the motorcycle.  I have also found that Garmin and Mapquest are optimistic about how fast you can get through the little towns when riding off the interstate - they don't seem to provide adequate time for traffic (and they are never account for the horrible traffic delays in Atlanta...which is the traffic pustule of I-75).

The trip is 353 miles and I should be able to do that with only 1 stop for fuel! ;)

Excited to be riding...and the weather forecast is great for the weekend!
(it is now 47 degrees but will be close to 60 by the time I climb on the bike and head south).
:)

MM and I have both made it home....dry!  We rode bikes down and the Sunday storm forecast chased us home early, we left about 7:30AM.

Stewmills and his brother Bailey are still down there riding - they hauled their bikes in and are likely to get a full day of riding in.......and will likely get wet hauling the bikes home.

Photos and stories (and some lies) will be posted soon - it was a great trip!

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 05/19/19 at 17:41:58

I just talked to Stew.....they had a great day of Sunday riding and all the rain stayed north.

Last week I looked the bike over - the brake pads were good, I changed the oil and filter, and looked at the rear tire.  These were the original factory Metzler tires and they and they had 7,590 miles on them.  The front tire looked good, the previous owner must have done a lot of highway riding as the edges of the back tire had plenty of tread - but the center was worn a bit flat - but it looked like it could make it for a bit longer.........and I figured that riding on the curvy roads would likely help to round out the profile a bit.

This is what the tire looked like when I left:

http://i68.tinypic.com/2dkw74.jpg

I made it down to MM's house in Lynchburg TN, and on Thursday we rode off to NC.  On the way we rode past Falls Creek Falls State Park....this is the only scenery shot I took all weekend.

http://i64.tinypic.com/2quucm0.jpg

When we got to Tellico Plains I noticed the center of the rear tire was worn down to the carcass rubber in the center!  There was no cord showing and the center of the tire felt plenty stiff - so we rode the Cherohala Skyway on to Robinsville........then I spent the night worrying about how I was going to get a new tire.....and who I was going to trust not to scratch my wheel.  Turns out that just a couple miles up 129 from Robinsville is Wheeler's - and he is a "Roadside Garage" from days gone by.  He has 400 tires in stock, changes 1,000 tires a year - and he got me fixed up in no time at all.  I took the wheel off and he put on a new Michelin Road 5 tire using his "no touch" machinery and he had an electronic balancer.  This guy is the "real deal" - there was a Harley on the rack for an oil and filter change when we arrived, he changed my tire, then before we left there were 4 more bikes in for new tires.

https://www.wheelersperformance.com/

This is what the rear tire looked like 640 miles after leaving home...along with the new Michelin Road 5 tire:

http://i68.tinypic.com/2s6okk3.jpg

On Saturday we stopped at Lake Burton for lunch....and I saw this bike.  Does it remind you of any of our forum members?

http://i65.tinypic.com/289ya15.jpg

On Saturday we road around in north GA.....and I found out what the local folks do in the winter months - when it is too cold for riding and all the tourists are gone.

http://i67.tinypic.com/sqqulg.jpg

It was a good ride weekend.  I rode a total of 1,422 miles and had a great time with MM, Stew and his brother.  We covered a lot of miles, took a lot of curves, scuffed up 8 tires pretty good (9 if you count the one I got replaced), and we enjoyed roads that were not very crowded as most schools have not let out for summer yet and the tourist have not yet flooded the place.  There were a lot of bikes and when we road past Two Wheels of Suches.....we could not even find a place to park and just got back on the highway - but we somehow managed to find a lot of good roads and only a few times did we get slow cars holding us up for a mile or two of twisties.  If you can find good weather - I think May is a good time to go riding in TN/NC/GA.

OK , Dave is justly proud of his BMW ,

Its fast , fast , fast ,  and keeping tires on it might be a challenging ?

But to be fair ....

Dave didn't run off like he could have , while running around with us Slower machines.

That BMW machine has a lot of Great Qualities about it !

That stuff about taking the tire off without pulling the axle proved to be a "Right handy idea"  ;)

The Fuel tank is not up high like mine 5.5 gallons up on top , No , the BMW's has a big tank too --- "under the seat" !  8-)    Our fuel light came on about the same time !

And the Luggage on that BMW all comes off and back on again really easy .
I don't know if I could ever buy "Permanent" Luggage again after seeing the benefits of the easy off kind.

Good Choice Dave !  ;)

As always, Dave and MM summarized the ride pretty good.  On Sunday while Dave and MM headed home me, my brother, and my other friend Dave from St. Louis rode for the day. Went NW of Blairsville and first stopped at the Field of the Woods (pictured), then further up NW thendown the dragon from the North, then Chorahala, and back through some new roads we haven't been on before, most of which had almost no traffic. Great day of riding.

Our trip home was uneventful...no rain and little traffic on a Sunday night.

Lastly, the other reason I have been away is I had to take a trip to Southern India (Thiruvananthapuram) for work.  Was only there about 24 hours (38 hours on a plane in 3 days!) so not much time to play or shop.  I did have a little time to walk down the street before it got too dark to see.  A gazillion motorcycles zooming all over the place literally an inch apart going 35mph down the street. Just like you'd expect. Culturally everyone was very nice and you didn't feel like you were a foreigner despite sticking out like a sore thumb. They all learn English in grammar school so it is not hard to communicate and navigate the area unlike other places where English is only learned at will by a select few.

The highlight of my trip and my only goal was to ride a tuk tuk.  I did, and it was with every penny of the $0.75 it costs me for the trip.

Just a random picture of the city street and a tuk tuk.

The Wife tells me I'm going either back to Texas or on to Arizona in August.

I'm going to "NEED" a cool mountain trip before then.   We've not been/seen a lot of places !

You thinking Arkansas ?

The wife and I are up for a trip to Arkansas (she won't let me go on that trip without taking her along for ballast company). ;)

Oldfeller:  If you can find a couple days with a good weather forecast, I will sneak off to the mountains with you and dodge afternoon showers!  I can't do it the last 2 weeks of June  - so that would only allow sometime between now and June 14th.  The current forecast shows the 11th - 14th to be cloudy but dry.

July is pretty open for me at the moment.

Guys, I was just trying to spot what you are doing next ......  MM wants some cool mountain weather and I can remember that we always got some mix of hot on all the mid summer trips ---- a few of them were seriously tire killing hot.   Unpleasantly hot.

Dave, I don't want to go to the knife store again in other words.    If you want cool, then mebbe plan for last week in August or first week in September.

Did we ever get really hot while up on the parkway or was that so high up it stayed pretty cool?

I going to need to use the next dry spell to get my first hay crop into the barn.

So , later in June or July I can get Marcia and the bike into the Truck and go almost anywhere.   Subject to approval by said "Marcia"  ::)
or
I can put a tent and overnight bag on the bike and take a week long ride .  With no need for approval from anyone.

In either case it would be nice to meet one or more of you fellers for a day or three .  :)

Post by Dave on 06/09/19 at 03:46:17

Those falls look like something I will have to do when the wife comes along.....she wants to spend as much time hiking/shopping as she does in the saddle!  The Highlands area is always clogged with tourists and slow traffic - when Stew and his brother Bailey and I were in the area in November - it was one of the first times we were able to enjoy the narrow/curvy road at a normal speed.

The weather here has been very wet, and I was only able to ride the bike 1 evening......Fri/Sat/Sun has been on/off drizzle and a peak of sun now and then.

I need to use up some vacation days before July 1 - or I will lose them.  If the weather turns nice - I likely will head down to the Daniel Boone National Forest and see if I can find any good riding and lodging in the area.....for me to get there is about half as far as going to the Dragon area.

Title: Re: new style of tire
Post by Oldfeller on 06/13/19 at 07:09:19

MM, you know my methods -- propose an idea, listen to the feedback, dodge around the problems and then have a secondary plan for rotten weather.

The cell phone location trick opened up a lot of ground to us as far as meeting up on the fly and regrouping after getting separated.

I am serious, we could bring wives and then ride with the wives to the shopping meccas and then the rest of the adventurous boys can go find GUN STORES and BIKE SHOPS and other neat stuff to kill the hours while wives do what they like best to do.    Everybody can be happy on a trip like that.

Communications and knowing an individual's location is no more than picking up a cell phone away ...... this gives us a lot to work with you know.

I'd start out with general DAYTIME TEMPERATURE as the wife places are down hill in the larger cities ..... i.e. HOT.    Next, I'd pick which general area zone you want to work out of.   The Blue Ridge area covers more civilization than any other zone we have ever done.

We talk out the ideas and see who is coming, then refine the plans to suit the needs of the group that is going.

I will be trailering and staying in a cabin, and thus will have at least one rainy day car to drive us all around with if we need it.   I can remember using that car a few times, too, to good advantage.

And yes Dave, if we take the wives to the Knife Store area we will drive a car or two with AC because we are Nice People ...... or generally always try to be.    Summer heat and stop and go in that shopping area makes poor bike riders wilt, it does.

Title: Re: new style of tire
Post by Dave on 06/13/19 at 07:34:22

It all sounds too complicated to me.  Trying to include the wives, shopping and a couple days ride up the Bluegrass Parkway in good weather and fit it into everybody's schedule sounds like a hard thing to plan and execute well.

If you want to meet at the KSL and ride around for a few days with the guys - pick some good weather days and I will come if I can get away.

I can't go the rest of this month.....July 2,9 & 12-14th I have commitments that will keep me from going.

So far the weather up here is like last year - rainy whenever there is a chance to go riding.......this is getting old as I had hoped for more chances to go riding this year.

I'm in the same kinda boat as Dave about  rain messing up my adventurous aspirations .     I need a 5 day dry spell to get the hay inside , and this time its only 3 days of sun , maybe the next dry cycle will be a 5 day run.

OldFeller , so your saying your wife is now ridding with ya for short rides ?

If my wife goes then the truck is sure to be involved .    :)

I believe it is the same for my wife.  She says she wants to try some longer rides - but she has her schedule so full of daily events that it is nearly impossible to get her on the back of the bike for more than an hour or two.  Whenever I am off and the sun is shining....she ends up being too busy to go on ride with me.  If we did come down to the KSL area, it would likely be a tow down and unload.......trying to get to the area on back roads would likely be a 10-11 hour ride.

I don't see how I could get her schedule to include any time for a ride down to TN/NC this summer.

Clarification:    My Wife is the owner of the only bike I have now -- she doesn't ride, not in front nor in back.   None, whatsoever.

Dave is saying he doesn't think wifey on the Blue Ridge is a good idea.    Too complicated.

I understand.

So, simplify guys, simplify.

And Badwolf and the others who are hanging back & keeping mum and withholding their ideas and feedback, well, that sends a signal too.   Speak up guys, are you interested in a trip or not?

how's the weather July 21-26th ?

Title: Re: new style of tire
Post by Oldfeller on 06/14/19 at 03:32:30

Mixed, we are too far out for any accurate weather predictions.   And I am not getting any signal from folks saying where they want to go to check the weather for that weekend as where counts for as much as when.

So far bringing wives gets a down check for being too complicated.    Rolling up the Blue Ridge seems to have hit some "lack of interest" for the broader group.   This leaves a simple trip to a place where you can park a trailer.

Mike is proposing a time span week of July 21st - 26th which is back into the heart of HOT.   Weather will be HOT with occasional pop up mountain thunderstorms wherever we go during that week.

So see, weather prediction can be simple and easy, too.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 06/14/19 at 08:01:34

The schedules and erratic weather just don't seem to make the BlueRidge ride work for the coming months.

Today is nice here in KY....then thunderstorms are forecast for all of the next 10 days.  This year is looking to be a match for last year - which was the 4th wettest year since they started keeping records.

At this point I think the best we can hope for is some good weather in July, and with a nice forecast we can "bug out" for a few days of riding our favorite roads.  I am starting to believe that staying at the KSL and riding to north GA or other remote areas does not make any sense.  We should ride around in the area we are staying......then move for the night if we want to ride somewhere else the next day.  The weather difference between TN/NC/GA seems to be nearly identical as a weather front seems to hit them all similarly - the pop up storms are local and unpredictable.

I am ready to go riding for a few days in July.......hope it works out.

We can schedule a proposed date and hope for good weather - but I believe we need to be able to shift those dates a few days if the forecast is better.

KSL sounds like the most good for the most folks, I will pull a trailer up next to the bunkhouse and just move my stuff over onto my favorite bunk.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 06/15/19 at 18:17:14

KSL has cabins, and they have a bunkhouse on the near end of the bathhouse.  I believe there are 8 beds in the bunkhouse, and you just rent one bed and might have room mates you don't know.

I believe you need to rent a cabin if you want one - I think it is easier to get a bed in the bunkhouse without a reservation.

The bunkhouse provides a very short walk to the bathroom! ;)

MM - It is not good weather for cutting hay up here - we have rain forecast for the next 9 days straight!

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Oldfeller on 06/16/19 at 05:10:52

Sleeping with strangers, eh, as long as I can get a bottom bunk and sleep next to a fan in a window I am golden.   My fall back will be an air mattress and sleeping bag under the tail of my trailer.

Bunkhouse in July will be hot until about 9-10:00 at night, so I might have to sit up and be sociable for a bit.

Have a Dr's appointment the 24th concerning the same left leg & knee that made me drop the barcalounger last trip.   Has no strength occasionally and I have had rare issues where the first few steps taken after sitting up get faultery.   Think of it as your leg goes to sleep, except you get no tingling sensations to warn you.

It is neurological and is known as a diabetic progressive, but drugs exist and I want a prescription to try them well in advance of trip time.

What will happen on trip if I run out of gas is that I will split off and head back to KSL, stopping periodically for rest breaks where they will sell me a cheap $0.69 Sr. drink (Burger King, Hardees).   There should be no interruption of your 12 hour joy rides and I will see you back at camp.

This trip will be a learning thing as I have been riding the Savage around town with no issues since this spring.

So you won't get shocked, I have lost about 40-50 pounds due to new diabetic drugs and the associated lighter eating regimen.   This is simply a new treatment level that all diabetics have to deal with.

And yes, I look old as dirt now ...... duh, I am old for a diabetic, most lifer male diabetics don't last this long so I am not complaining.

It has been rain, rain, rain....and it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.  It started raining on Saturday and has been raining on/off ever since, and some of the rains have been intense and the low areas are getting flooded repeatedly.  For the next 9 days rain is forecast for every day except this coming Friday.

The news this morning reported that this is the 3rd wettest year for weather up to June 17th at 33 inches for the year - which is 12" above normal.

If this trend continues - it is likely to put a damper on any ride planning.

Yesterday, the main 5 ton AC unit died.   Wife is sweltering and all we have out of the AC guy is a quote for a new compressor unit and new style controls to mate up to it.   He has no unit, unit has to come from Charlotte.

Wife will get her new AC as soon as it arrives and I will be broke for the rest of the summer.

Later this week I'm going to Texas for the 4th time this year and still haven't got but one bike ride in for the season.
The bright side of that is Marcia has gone on several "Day" rides this year.

We should do at least one NC. or Arkansas trip before the summer is up !

So ya been to Arizonan in August ?    I'd like to visit the Black Hills in August but don't think its going to happen this August  .    :(

Arkansas might be nice in late August , I'll likely be trucking in and bring a date if I go anywhere much , we've made the guzzi comfortable with that CORBIN seat and it pulls good even ridding double.    If my Harley seat on the Savage wasn't so comfee  I'd put a Corbin on the Savage.   Getting spoiled I guess ?  ::)

The last discussion I had with Deb about the Ozarks.....was she wanted to do it in the fall - like September or October.

She wants to take a ride to Franklin, TN (near Nashville).....evidently there was a huge Civil War battle there and she wants to go see the area.  She was reading a book and it talked about the battle....evidently it was one of the biggest battles of the war.

I got over $500.00 worth of grass seed I have to water every day for the next couple weeks.
Bermuda Hybrid that get up to 30" tall .    Sounds like the perfect HAY FIELD .   $530.00 for a 50# bag of seed , but they are so tinny there must have been 10 billion of them in the 50# bag.  Once I get them little seedlings  up and going they take care of themselves and are REALLY HARDY to the point of being illegal to import into some states.   So they put out runners under-ground , on top of the ground , and put out seeds .   Also their roots run really deep and are drought hardy.

But , I've got to "Baby" my investment till it get established .    I can deliver 100 gallons between sundown and dark easily but I've got to be here to do it.

I hate it that I'm sort-of "Grounded" for a couple weeks of summer but this is prime time to plant this stuff .

Ha Dave ,  If nobody else (can/wants-to/is able to ) go to Robinsville then why not make your ride to Lynchburg --- we can "DAY-RIDE" all day and eat ribs and baked taters every night ?
There is a new Indian Motorcycle shop in Lynchburg you ain't see yet , next door to the Harley shop .   ::) (not much to see either)

Bermuda , thats when you have to plant it .   Well according to the gang that hangs out at  Co-op .

Versey , you know you got a place in Tn. to use as a "Staging point" , or as a "get-a-way" .    I've got one extra twin bed , four recliners , and in the rock house there's a couch.
I'm glad to see ya anytime you show up.!   :)

Only clench could be : if I'm headed to Arizona while your headed east ?   My house sitter could pass ya the extra key and you'd still have use of the house , but I wouldn't be here to cook for ya !  ::)

Did I ever take you fellers up on "Crystal Ridge" ?  or to the place where three states and two time zones meet ?  :-?   Yea , a brass base-ball size marker pin-points the exact spot .  8-)

I have been busy cutting firewood to keep me and the Mrs. warm next winter - I have been working on this in the early morning or late evening to avoid the 90+ heat............but I can postpone that work for a few days of fun!

Heart attack.

Post by Dave on 07/26/19 at 06:17:21

Euell died of “natural” causes!

The ride down was nice, it took 7 hours to ride 350 miles. The traffic was light and the weather was perfect. I rode on I75 to Mount Vernon and then got onto smaller roads that went past Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow.

Yesterday Mike took me to Sewanee TN and to the place where TN/AL/GA all meet. We found some nice roads - but when my Garmin tried to take me onto a gravel road named “Skidmore “ I did not comply!

I thought we agreed not to let MM have a GPS since he tries to always lead us into the woods and gravel pits?  His GPS stood for Goat-trail Positioning System   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 07/27/19 at 19:37:09

It was my GPS that tried to lead me astray, and on the way home today it tried to take me on a road listed as 119.....it was a dirt path and you could see the muddy creek crossing 100 feet from the intersection!

The ride home today took me 10 hour to cover 409 miles (including the stops for fuel and lunch).  I avoided all interstate travel, and some of the roads through the Daniel Boone National Forest were only 1.5 lanes wide - but there was nice rural scenery.

I traveled 1,100 miles in the 4 days....my but was a bit weary when I got home today.  It was a nice trip - with good riding and perfect weather!

 Goat-trail Positioning System

So ,  :-?  If I was to get a Himalaya ya'll would still follow me wouldn't ya ?

....................................

Versey and Lancer went to the  Church at Swanee to see all the stained glass windows and their stories , so I thought Dave should see them too.

One day we went to Cannonboro in Murfreesboro Tn.   They have at least one "Steam powered Tractor" , I'm not sure what some of that other stuff even was ... but a few of the pieces of farm equipment were so old they were made of "Wood" ... One of them might have been a wooden "Hay" gathering tool ?  and Massively built .
We went over to Sloan's Cycles and got a throttle Cramp-Buster for my guzzi.

The first day the Savage got to go then day two was the Guzzi's turn.

We did find a inviting looking road that we didn't get to try.   It was about lunch time and we didn't want Dave getting hangry , but we did get some good advice on where to eat at from a local expert.
When we got to the Dairy Delight (home-padded hamburgers) our neighbors proved to be VERY FRIENDLY  not dangerously so but I barely got any words in at all on the first feller , then when the second feller started in I couldn't hear what the first guy was even saying ... after a while my eyes got tired of lip-reading and I had to leave.    Well , one of them followed us out to the parking lot just "grinning and Jawing" so friendly like I thought we'd never get to leave .   ::)

I'll post some perty "Grass" pictures next time !   :)

I will follow you until the pavement stops and the gravel/mud begins.  I hate riding a dirty motorcycle!  (I also don't like riding in the rain for the same reason......it requires a washing and cleanup afterwards).

Those two old fellows in the Dairy Delight were sumthin.......they certainly had a lot of stories to tell, and then wanted them all told consecutively!

At the Indian dealer in Lynchburg MM was trying out the Scout to see if Springman should buy one.  Low seat heat, plenty of power......they do offer it with different handlebars and pegs to ease the forward reach.  We saw two used ones at Sloan Cycle that were in the $6,000 range, and both of them looked pretty nice.  That big fat front tire seems a bit out of place to me......but that must be a fad as the new Honda Rebel models have the same thing going on - they look a bit like the Suzuki Van Van or the big tire bike from Yamaha.

Hay Springman

$6,K for a low mileage Scout is very comparable to my deal on the V-9 .

Do ya think the Scout is big bodied enough to put a passenger seat on , and maybe some luggage ?

That is a good question. Big bodied enough? I am not sure. I can tell you though that it has plenty of power? Space on the bike though, I really do not know.

I have to admit that even after test riding the scout and feeling giddy with all that power, I always seem to be glad to get back on the savage.  :-?

I can't go play Guzzi with you......the wife and I are going to Jasper, Arkansas and leaving on Saturday.  We are taking the car and hauling a bike down so we can do day rides.

Then Oct. 4-6th I will be riding down with a local friend to the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Days in Birmingham, Alabama.

Not sure if I can sneak in any other trips this year....but  I will if I can!

Unfortunately I am out. Right in the middle of a kitchen remodel and have to tear out cabinets and countertops this weekend, run some electrical and plumbing, and hang new sheetrock in preparation for new cabinets next week.

Why don't you Guzzi's head south and we can knock out the kitchen in a couple of hours  8-)

I will be going to Barber's on Saturday 5 October. Me, brother, and friend are riding up for a long, full Saturday and headed back home Saturday night.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019

I am not sure there are any TN/NC/GA rides left in 2019.....the weather has just made a turn for the worse here in KY.  Tuesday night my wife and I went for a ride in the 74 degree weather......on Wednesday it was 50 degrees!

Last year when Stewmilles, his brother Bailey and I scheduled a weekend ride the weather forecast was for temps in the 50's....it turned out to be in the 30's for Saturday.....and we woke up to 23 degrees on Sunday!

It is possible we could get a nice weekend yet - but the trip would have to be a spur of the moment thing with very little advance notice.  Getting a room at the Two Wheel Inn would not require an advance reservation.

I will watch the weather and let you know if I believe the conditions warrant a trip!

Let me know what pops up...I have learned to bundle up by now, and if Dave brings his battery heated vest I am going to drain his batteries while he is sleeping so we are all on an even playing field  8-)

two weeks ago the weather was fairly nice and I suspect 2 weeks from now it will be Fair also.

So we are flying by the seat of our pants looking for a warm spell .   I can wait a bit.  ;)

Marcia may want to sit this one out being cool nights and the bath house not being in the tent .    ::)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019

For these very late in the year and cold at night events......tent camping is out for me - the Two Wheel in has heat, bathroom/shower in the room, and a nice garage to park the bike.

It costs a bit more than tent camping - but it is worth it to have a warm place to sleep at night.

Deb may come as well........we just have to wait and see if the weather cooperates.  Last year the advanced weather forecast was soooooo wrong, and the promised 50 degrees turned out to be 20-30 degrees colder!

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by stewmills on 10/18/19 at 06:55:39

Agreed on the non-tent trip. It isn't worth the headache when the weather isn't guaranteed nice and breezy warm. Not sure if the wife will go, but I can ask and if she says no (probably will) I can bring my brother.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 10/20/19 at 16:58:15

We can watch the weather for the next two weeks and see if either one of them works out.   I can leave on Wednesday night and ride Thursday through Saturday and come home on Sunday either weekend (Stewmills and Bailey can arrive late Friday night and only ride on Sat/Sun).  The cold morning temps may not be to Deb's liking....she likely won't want to come if the temps are cold and I will come alone.

So lets watch Oct 24 through 27 (currently showing rain on Friday and Sunday).

And watch Oct 31 through Nov 3 (currently showing cloudy and dry).

We don't need to ride all 4 days - I am just letting you know that I can ride any of those days if the weather makes it possible....maybe we only ride Saturday/Sunday and I come home on Monday.  This time of year I think we have to let the weather choose the dates.

By the end of Tuesday we need to make a decision if we want to ride on Thursday......so I can get packed up and ready to leave on Wednesday.  If we ride later in the week.....hopefully everybody can react and make a commitment with a 2 day notice.

Looks like this weekend is a bust.......so the wife and I are going to go on a long local ride on Thursday.

MM is suggesting we try for the Nov 8-10th weekend and he will be bringing Marcia, and I will likely be bringing Deb.  We will watch the weather and see how it goes......Accuweather shows daytime highs in the 50's and night time temps in the middle 30's for that time of year - my wife may not be real keen on riding in those temps but I am OK with it.  (This year I will be using my heated vest, new winter jacket and insulated pants......and the bike has heated grips).  Maybe the women will go adventure in the car during the chilly morning hours, then ride with us in the afternoon when it is warmer.

Sounds good...I don't know of any hard commitments after this weekend other than Thanksgiving.  If is is cold, we'll bundle up and make the best of it. Whether or not Paula comes is a toss up...she seems to think she won't have fun up there because it is just motorcycles, hard women, liquor and cigarettes all weekend.  I have no idea where she gets that Idea. She has met Dave and likes him, so I guess that means MM is the one with all the bad things she's worried about  ;D ;D

If it is cold, I am going to get me some of those race tire warmers we saw at Barber's and wrap them around my legs 8-)

50 deg. is about my lower limit for fun .     I have suffered lower temps but they require "bundling - up" time and "Long-Johns"  ;)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 10/26/19 at 05:13:52

I agree.....50 degrees and above is a range that provides for fun riding.  When it is colder it ends up being more of a "survival challenge" for me.

The Milwaukee heated vest I bought has been a very good investment for me, it works really well and on the low setting a single battery keeps me warm for about 6 hours.  I have used it on the motorcycle in temps down in the 30's, when skiing in temps below zero, and even when I get to the office and the heat has not come on and got the room warm yet.

I have bought a good cold weather riding coat and pants, and that helps a lot......last year I used my ski pants and they worked fine.

Having a bike with an windshield also helps - especially if it is wide enough to deflect the wind off your hands.

MM, if you get one of these let me know how it works.  It was hard for me to tell if it comes with the battery (edit: it says mobile power not included), and if you ride with it connected to the USB.  It says in two separate places: "When heating, you need to connect the mobile power supply all the time." and "Do not use for a long time, please do not connect to mobile power."

So, do I or do I not? Hmmm.

I have the battery tender USB adapter as well as my standard USB pulling from the headlight bucket. I suspect using the battery tender would be preferred over the headlight tapped USB due to the amount of draw these things have?

HAHAH.  I am just glad to see that I can connect my charge treasure to it. Hard to find a treasure compatible jacket.

However, I really need the advertised " Vitality restoration: It provides deeper adjustment of physiological functions to avoid sub-health state and restore the vitality"

I agree and am thinking no on tethering the vest to the bike, but ok to tether the battery pack to recharge it.

900,000mAh is a pretty dang hefty battery. The vest will run 6+ hours at 10,000mAh, so that should work for about 4-5 days  8-)

Only downside is the jacket has to come on the slow boat from China....

::)

I'l bet its a typo ... or they claim its a typo ?   I'm thinking 9,000mAH is what will show up.   I already have two simular packs  that are 10k...

Its a $20, gamble , sometimes the China stuff works out great and sometimes not  ???  :-?

Why didn't they save themselves some ink?

900,000 mAh = 900 Ah

10,000 mAh = 10 Ah

Divide the Ah by the current draw and you get hours.

MM:

I was out on a group ride with 3 others today - temps in the high 50's, and it may be the warmest we get for a while.

This 1980 Goldwing was there and it is for sale.....the owner is in his 70's and downsizing and he has another one of these that he will be riding (can't ride 2).  The bike looks good and he is only asking $2,500....you and Marcia would be very comfortable on this bike.

I'm glad I come to mind once in a while .  8-)

That bike looks a lot like the V-7 with the Corbin seat ,the 40L bags and the 40L top box.
But somehow I suspect its not as nimble .   I've also drag raced a 1100 Wing with the V-7 and the V-7 is just a little bit quicker.   Also the same 1100 wing vs the Savage the Wing is just a little bit quicker , not much but a little especially after 75/80 mph.   The Harley 883 and the 1100 GWing were a Really close match.
...........................
A buddy of mine has a 83 1100 GoldWing.  He went through a 888 rear tire in 6,000 miles and needed a new one. Sloans Cycle put it on 2 years ago.  So , he went to Sloans Cycles  to have another tire installed .   They run him off --- with the story of old bikes having rusty bolts that break-off on disassembly.   They wouldn't touch it.
He don't have  paypal account either .
So , he ask me what to do ?
First thing I told him was "Lets get you a tire that don't need replacing no more than necessary".    You can guess what tire that is.  So I ordered him one.
Then we spent about 3 hours on my carport putting it on the bike.   You don't ever want to have to put a tire on an old GWing !   :-[
I'd rather do the Guzzi twice than the Wing once again !   It took two jacks - one for the bike and one for the swing-arm/shaft thing getting "JUST RIGHT".   It seems the axle only comes out when its in the perfect position.

I have rode his old GoldWing and its easy to like till ya get to a corner , then its like a low/wide/monster.

Accuweather forecast for the period Nov 3 - 11 still looks picture perfect.  Weather is dry, partly sunny/cloudy, night time temps in the 30's and daytime highs in the mid 50's to mid 60's.  As the next week unfolds we need to start picking days to arrive/depart....we know Stewmills and his gang would be arriving late Friday night and riding Sat/Sun (8th,9th).  I can adjust my arrival a few days before or after if anyone wants to ride on a weekday and the weather warrants it.

Is this more to your liking?  I had a friend who owned one of these and said it was the best bike he ever owned......smooth as silk!

Right now I am tied up at home this weekend putting in hardwoord floors in the kitchen (finally got the base cabinets resolved and finished yesterday).  Considering I am close to losing my mind, I can aim to have the floors done this weekend so I can break away next weekend if that looks viable?

Wife can't go - so this is a solo trip for me.

I can drive down as early as Wednesday, and I can also stay beyond Sunday.  If I were to stay and ride all Sunday, I could come home on Monday.

The weather forecast has changed to allow more wetness toward the weekend.  Rain and drizzle is possible on Wednesday, Thur/Fri are mostly sunny, Saturday and Sunday are showing a couple of showers possible.  I really don't like riding in the rain - I like it even less when it is cold rain.

We still have a week for the weather to make more changes - so we will just have to watch and see what happens.  Last year the advance forecast showed temps in the 50's - but it ended up being 20 degrees colder by the time we arrived! (It was 23 degrees when we got up on Sunday morning).

Fri/Sat/Sun of this week is clear and cold.....but no rain!

We are burying my sister on the 3rd.

So Dave ,
Would Deb be more interested if we went to Helen instead of Robbinsville ?

Marcia told me she is ready for a Helen trip.  That would be ride in the middle of the day and walk/shop till the day warms-up .

Dave , I'm not sure you understand what a wonderful bike the V-7 is .   Its big enough to go anywhere and be fun doing it.  But not so big as to be trouble waiting to happen .   It also is very easy to drive , and comfortable for a all day ride.   I don't like the 17" rear tire , but I can live with it as a "WE" bike.   :)

Deb would like to go - but can't go.  She committed to singing at two events over the weekend and also attending some kind of event at church.

It is a bit of an irritation to me......she is committing to so many things that we seldom have an opportunity to ride together - and she does not have the ability to do anything without planning months ahead of time.

So....I am coming alone, by myself, without a wife.

Yea Dave I can sort of understand that .   That's how it is with Marcia working .   But even if she goes  , then its the truck for the trip and the bike for the Day-rides.

Things are a changing !

With my son being in Korea for a year , I hope to check some  places off my bucket list this next year.

Lets look at the weather forcast again.  The 13th of Nov. is the only thing I've got locked in for Nov. so far , those night/early morning temp make me shiver just thinking about them ...  :-[

I might want to warm more than my hands ?   You know like my feet too ?  ;D   I don't know if pillows come big enough for size 12 feet.  ::)

Last spring in Suches was about as cold as I can do.  Some times I think my bod don't work as good as it used to ?

The weather for 8,9,10 Nov.  looked promising on the local news tonight.
We would bring the truck/Bike , stay in budget motel , and day ride after a late breakfast if it works out .   Maybe stay in Helen and day trip to robbinsville ?  :-?    Call it a Fall Color Cruise ?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 11/01/19 at 03:23:17

I don't remember Suches being particularly cool last year.......is my memory fading?  I do admit that it gets harder with each trip to remember that event specifically....details of the trip tend to blend together with other trips I have taken.  I can remember stopping for gas and it being really hot.....and enjoying the air conditioning inside the little rustic store.

All of us will be hauling the bikes to Robbinsville this year.......I believe I will be coming very early on Thursday morning during the cool hours, and I should be arriving around noon and take an afternoon ride.

At this point Friday weather looks a little bit iffy for rain - we will just have to wait and see what develops.  Monday is forecast for showers - so staying on an extra day would not make any sense.

Dave , so your referring to 7 Nov. in Robbinsville ..(I believe I will be coming very early on Thursday morning during the cool hours) .    So , you , Stew and Stew's Pillows are sharing a room and me and Marcia are sharing another one ?   :-?

I haven't got the wife's blessing on all this yet.  But once I get my story straight then it should fly under the Fall-Color-Cruise flag .  ;)   I'll try for Thursday - Saturday nights (3) then come home Sunday morning.

Partnerships can be a balancing act sometimes going both ways !  ;)
Sometimes we agree just to have Stories to share when we get back home !  ;D

Dave , you got the name of that motel ?

We are staying at the Two Wheel Inn.  Biker friendly folks, good people who have owned the place a bit more than a year - they need our business.  The place comes with a garage to put the bike in!

You might be able to find a bit cheaper place at one of the hotels in or near Robbinsville.

First.....I am sorry your sister passed.  I find it really hard to express my feelings for that event - what does someone 300 miles away say that makes anything easier for you and your family?  I hope that like your family, she went knowing that she had been a good and faithful servant and she was called home.

The weather forecast keeps changing, and that is no surprise a week out.  A couple days ago Wednesday was forecast to be the wettest day - now it is supposed to be sunny and the warmest day of the week!  All of the mornings are going to be down around freezing, and the afternoons are supposed to be 53 - 60.

I can bring Deb's heated vest for Marcia - she has never worn it on a long trip so I don't know if it will last all day....but if it only lasts a few hours it could help to get her through the first part of the ride until things warm up in the afternoon. Deb also has some warm motorcycle pants that I can bring along in case Marcia wants to try them.  (I believe that on a bike with a windshield, the passenger gets more wind and it is a bit harder to stay warm).

I will call the Two Wheel Inn today and let them know of our plans - I don't expect we will have to make any reservations, as last year only about 20% of the rooms were occupied.

Thanks for the kind words Dave.  Its not a sad thing that she passed away.

Now the weather forecast looks like next Sunday - Wednesday would be the time to visit the area. ???
So Marcia tells me she don't care about going if all we are going to do is ride all day .   Well , by time the days warms up  to 50 deg. there won't be no all day day-ride !  ::)

Maybe we should go ride the Natchez Trace to South Mississippi instead ?  Or somewhere warm ?

We might be better off just to take a local fall color cruise some time next week.

If the weather there acts like the weather here today - it was 28 when we got up this morning and the sun had warmed things up to 45 by noon......and we will top out at 50 by 2PM, - it will stay there until 6PM.

I expect that the routine will be getting up and going up to Huddle House for breakfast with the ride starting around 10AM.  We ride here and there, get a light lunch somewhere, and then start a path toward home so we can arrive just about the time dark and cold set in.  The ride will not be too aggressive with cold tires and leaves scattered all over the road - the riding is really good however as there are almost no campers, motor homes or tourists clogging them up. There will be a few "leaf lookers".......that tight section of 28 heading into the Highlands was great last year - we sailed through without the normal parade of slow tourists blocking the road.

We will just have to watch the weather and plan on the arrival and departure dates.  Stewmills and his brother can be there Sat/Sun so I will be there to ride with them on those days unless the weather turns really foul - riding Thur/Fri or Mon/Tues makes no difference to me as long as the weather is good.

I have only ridden the Natchez Trace in the area south of Franklin around Leapers Fork, and it is not very exciting or scenic in that area.  It is a 45mph strip of asphalt with mowed grass along the edge....then trees beyond that - the view in almost any direction doesn't go beyond the tree line.

I can understand what you guys are talking about, it was down into the 70's here in Florida! I ALMOST wore a long sleeve jersey for my bike ride this morning. A light jacket felt good on the M/C going to the range this afternoon, still wore shorts thou. If you want to ride after the frost has invaded the great white north, head south,,,WAYYYY SOUTH.

The weather forecast is changing rapidly.....now it appears Mon/Tue/Wed are excellent - too bad I have to work!

Thur/Fri are now looking like they could be wet, Sat/Sun are dry and sunny, and Mon (11th) is potentially drizzly.

So....we just need to wait and see how the forecast is going to change as the week progresses.  I am still planning on leaving Thursday morning and staying until Sunday if the weather allows.  If only Sat/Sun remain as the dry days......I am not opposed to coming down Friday afternoon/evening and riding Sat/Sun.

OK......8 hours later and now the forecast is all dried up and not a single day calls for rain!

The bad news is the temperature drops almost 20 degrees between Thursday and Friday.....the high on Friday will only be 45.  The overnight temperature will be 23 degrees when we get up Saturday morning.....almost a carbon copy of the cold Sunday we had last year - except there is supposed to be sun and highs up near 60......it is just the morning warmup that is brutal  (Last year I don't think it got up above freezing on Sunday when we were on the Cherohala Skyway..

Let's hope for a warmup - but at the moment it isn't scaring me away.........Thursday will be great, Friday looks to be a bit chilly all day....and the mornings on Sat/Sun will be chilly.

The following weekend has similar daytime temps - and the overnight temps are expected to be in the middle 30's.  If this coming weekend is just too cold - can anybody do the following weekend?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by MMRanch on 11/03/19 at 19:34:45

The color in the trees are about at their peak in my area now.   But my spare room is occupied by a young man just getting on his feet , so I don't have anywhere to put a body (or two) up at the moment.   :-[

We might have to go all the way to see Bad Wolf before nice weather gets into the picture , how twisty roads fit into the picture , I don't know.  :-/

can anybody do the following weekend?

45 at night and 70 in the day ?   I day ride all winter long on sunny afternoons for short trips of a couple of hours.   I've found that below 50 deg. it ain't fun no more.   Every day is Saturday .  except Sunday ...  :)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 11/04/19 at 02:05:48

Things are looking pretty gruesome for this weekend.

It seems a low pressure is headed across the area, and things are going to be pretty cold over the weekend.  The overnight temperatures are going to be 22 on Friday and 20 on Saturday.....the highs will only be at 40/41.

There are no 60 temperatures left anywhere in the monthly forecast - it seems that any warms days in November are going to be a "fluke" .

It may well be the riding season is over. :(

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2019
Post by Dave on 11/11/19 at 03:20:46

I looked at the weather that just past on the planned dates.....it was not so horrible as the prediction - but it still wasn't ideal.

We would have been warmer than last year - still the morning rides would have been a bit cold and the afternoon warmth most likely only lasted 4-5 hours.
Thursday was 33 in the morning and it warmed up to 57.
Friday was 39 in the morning and it warmed up to 55.
Saturday was 28 in the morning and it warmed up to 55.
Sunday was 24 in the morning and it warmed up to 65!

The weather over the weekend was very similar here, and it was in the 20's  in the morning and Friday/Saturday I worked in the garage in the morning and then in the afternoon I cut firewood and burned brush piles.  Yesterday morning we were in the 40's and it quickly got up into the 60's by afternoon - I washed a bike and went for a ride to dry it out.....it is very likely that it was the "farewell riding event" for this year.  We are supposed to get snow this evening and temperatures will be down to 14 by Tuesday night.  I believe it is still just a bit too warm for the snow to stick - but if the road departments get overly zealous and spray "brine" or spread salt on the roads......there will be no more riding until the spring rains in March/April wash the salt away.

We could trailer to go see Bad Wolf ?  Yea , Sandy beaches instead of Salty Roads !   ;D

Marcia and I got a ride before the cold/wet front got here today 50+ miles.

I had some bad news :   Technically this is a 2019 event , being a event that happened this year.

So at the gas station(about a week ago)  , I started the engine on the V-9  ... well it hit about 5 licks and died !  ???
After about 3 minutes it clicked under the fuel tank somewhere and I was able to start it again.
But
The Check Engine light has been on ever since .
Now for the good news :
I have found out I have a bumper to bumper fix anything guarantee till January 2021 .   :)
So , I'm taking it to my local dealer Wednesday  and Guzzi is getting the bill !  ;D
After 2021 ??? ,  The guys on the Guzzi site tell me its not that hard to hook the computer up to the bike and do all sorts of things ...

Anybody recognize this plug ?

Two USA options at the bottom (roamer and bobber), then dive into the diagrams and see if you can find it.
