We know we are getting older when we have to struggle to push .223 rounds into 30 round clips.   This little gizmo makes it easy peasey to do (and hurts my old arthritic fingers a whole lot less).

I'm getting a new computer for Christmas , no kicking at all .  ;)

But , I'm hoping for a whole terabyte !

What'cha buying?   The terabyte HD is easy since they don't built them any smaller than that any more.

I suspect it will be a Dell Inspiron , w/I-5 processor .   The old Acer I've been using is so crazy slow it reminds me of "Dial-up" Days !  :-[

I've been putting up  with the Acer (windows 10/Celeron) just fine but , Some times it frustrates Marcia to the point of bringing out the side of her , that's not so perty .  :-X
Normally we each have our own computer , but her old windows 7 won't do stuff sometimes so she gets my window 10.   It could be just the window 7 to 10 differences , but I'm a  computer illiterate most of the time , so I'm only guessing.

So , I've got three old computers I don't use anymore .
A Dell (7) with broken screen
A Toshiba Satellite w/17" screen (Vista) works but not supported on the net anymore.
And the Acer Aspire E 15 - I'm on now (10) , still works but slow.  After Christmas it may retire ?

Walmart has a lot of computers with 500GB and less still for sale and a lot of them are still the old Celeron processor too.  They want Big $$ for the terabytes.

Yea , Versey

I had an idea to use the Toshiba to plant an herb garden in but it won't hold much dirt ?

………………..

with so much personal information on them , there should be a safe way to get rid of them and reuse the screens and such.  ?

So , jcstokes  what's the "A" stand for  ?   as in SFA ?  I must not get around much ???  :-/

An external 1TB HDD will retail for €100 including the case and USB cable.

The difference in prioce between a PC with 500GB and 1TB HDD is €50.

So I am afraid that somwhere, retailers are overselling what really should cost peanuts.

From this point of view, Amazon is a tue Peacemaker -
If Wally sells something for $100 and Amazon will deliver the same,
in three days, at half the price, you know whom to turn to.

As for Win7 / Win.VISTA, IIRC MS should encourage you to upgrade for very little cost.
Else, LINUX is, inho, a better OS than Windows.

What you want to watch out for is the slowy-pokey Celeron microprocessors
who claim they're 64bit, but are actyally the equivalent to the old "SX" chips of 386/486 fame.
In other words, Celerons should always be fed a 32bit OS.
They simply don't have enough teeth to chew on 64bit OS.

HTH :)

I agree with Versy, you should expand your computer mind and save the money.

You can get a fully functional, relatively quick computer for free .......   Your Microsoft OS is sorry, not your old hardware.

Put Linux Mint Mate on it.    I bet your wife has used such at schools on occasion.

MM, since you have several computers, it would be worth your while to consider the Linux Mint option. It shouldn't cost more than US$6 to get a disc, you could then uninstall the Vista and let someone tell you how to "Burn and Scrape" the Vista, you would still have Windows on your other computer so you could make an effective comparison if you wish. I've been using Linux since about April this year. There is a learning curve which I've largely sorted. Still having fun and games uploading photos from my cell phone. I've had to partition Windows7 and Linux in my computer. As of now I don't want to dump Windows completely because of the photography issues. If you think you're computer illiterate, I'd leave you in the dust, if it came to an illiteracy championship. US$6 is a cheap pressie.

MM, come back to us with some indication of interest, or a lack of interest as the case may be.

I have burned you an installation DVD of Linux Mint Mate 19.1 and it is sitting next to my keyboard.   Make a positive indication and it can be there by New Years Day.    on the way now

Yes, Santa Claus is real when it comes to Linux Mint.

Full instructions about what to do with it are here .......   (stick it in your DVD drive and reboot the laptop, can't get much easier than that)

https://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php

Once it is running off the DVD, this will help get you past your "oh my goodness" confusion stage.    There is an icon on the DVD installation version's desktop to do a full installation with any full installation details you might could want in the link above if the built-into-the-software instructions and explanations aren't good enough.

Or, since you already use Firefox just click on the Firefox icon and get started to using it.

MM, we are serious ----- install Linux Mint on one of your "dead" laptops (one with a working DVD drive and a working screen, naturally) and see if it doesn't run better than your latest Win 10 unit.

Buy your wife what she wants and still have a internet searching and Savage posting laptop of your very own kept off to the side ......  one that is as fast or faster than hers, but costs you literally nothing.

Linux Mint Mate looks and works a whole lot like XP or Win 7.   Old familiar appearance and menu system.   Old home week stuff that simply runs faster and with less hassles.

Your DVD is in the mail winging your way.

As they have said for the last longest time, What'cha got to lose by looking at it?

Stick the DVD in and reboot the machine and take a look at it.

===================================================

General recommendations for first time Linux Mint users ......  you can do a dual boot installation if you feel queasy about going whole hog.   I did so, because I had no experience with Mint but soon I stopped dual booting and went whole hog on Mint and totally got rid of Windows.

Why?   The Windows half kept screwing up the whole machine with the nightly update crap and I had to reinstall the Mint DVD like 4 times over the next couple of years because of them sorry arsed broken window panes.

http://https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2014/09/broken-windows-100436401-primary.idge.jpeg

Good news is you can reinstall Mint on that machine or on any other machine literally HUNDREDS of times until the DVD gets too scratched up to read correctly.    Hey, and once I got Windows completely off the machine totally it hasn't screwed up since then, ever.

And like any good FOSS software, the cost per installation remains forever $0.00 with the same price being charged for all the additional software that you could ever want -- just go to the Software Manager item under the little bottom left Mint symbol and go get yourself whatever your heart desires.

Mint pre-loads all the best of the best for you, automatically anyway, but sometimes you need something else for whatever reason, and it takes just a click or two to go get it.

Once the software shows up on your software list, right click and drag an icon pointer back to the program over to the desktop this will drop you a movable desktop icon to make it easy to get to the program with a single double click.

Easy peasey all the way ......  that's Mint.

MM and OF, one issue I had early in the piece with Linux were Google crashes. I install every Linux update relating to "Google Stability" and the problem has dissappeared. Following OF's advice I turned off Windows updates before I went to Linux, I'm not saying MS doesn't invade my computer at night, but then I'm too illiterate to know. MM, if you do decide to try Linux, update through "packages" and don't worry about "local mirrors" even if they are supposedly faster. With multiple computers, you have nothing to lose.

MM gets the advantage of starting out totally current and caught up.   Mint Mate 19.1 is brand new and totally fresh as of 12/20/2018.

Right hand bottom of his screen is the little update shield that will show MM how many upgrades he is due to take, all he has to do is accept each one when the number count goes from a check mark to a number showing on the little shield.    He starts the update by clicking on the shield icon with the number in it.   Updates take less than 2 minutes to do, more if your internet connection is very slow as Mike's tends to be.

Other good advice, pick a very simple very short password.   Mint does not demand that you have a long complicated password, so don't have one.    Have a dirt easy to remember VERY SHORT and easy to type password.   I have used 2 digits before, but you can do a very short word if you like.   Make your life easy, not hard.

Google, if you want it, has to be installed from Google's web site -- it is the only way it comes any more.

Type this into the browser bar on the machine you plan to put it on and follow the instructions that show up on your screen.      You must do this from the new Mint machine as Google senses the machine and gets the right Linux Mint Mate stuff set up automatically.   There is no disk involved, it is all direct to the actual machine it is going on to.

https://www.google.com/chrome/

Firefox is already part of Linux Mint 19.1 and shows on the bar on the bottom of the page.   As always, you can right click on that icon and drag an icon to your desktop and put it where you want it.

Vocabulary : Reboot

Turn on and run the disk ?

………………………..

I'm thinking of getting all my old pictures off my old Vista 17" screen , unplugging the internet so the Vista won't freeze itself before the new program can even run.

Marcia has already got my new computer under the tree.

So ,
how hard is it learn the new Linux system ?
what kind of internet protection works on Linux

Money is not an issue , what the thing for me is ease of use.   I have gotten used to  Window 10 - but have never Liked it.
I guess I need to play with the new system for a while.

Title: Re: What neat stuff are you getting for Christmas
Post by Oldfeller on 12/20/18 at 20:59:28

If your wife bought you both a new computer, then by all means use it.  Don't be upsetting the wife who bought you something expensive and nice.

If you want to play with Mint, you can do that too (later on).

You can get help here on the list by simply telling us what you need and there are several Mint users on here all the time that can help you.

Copy the pictures over to a jump drive or to Dropbox or to the Google Drive account you got with your Android phone (yes, you have a 15 gig Google Drive account attached to your gmail.com email address that is all part of setting up any new Android phone).

===================================================

Reboot = open the drive, put the DVD in, close the drive and then restart the machine by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts off, then punching the power button once to start up the boot sequence again.

Then the Mint software senses your hardware configuration and sets itself up completely off what it sees at that particular point in time --- so make sure you have your internet cable connection plugged in, you have your WiFi system on the laptop turned on, and you got any and all USB hub type gimcracks, ball mice, game pads and any and all other accessories that you ever plan to use all cabled to the machine when you first install the software.    Simpler that way .....  you can unplug it later and it will work when you plug it back in.

Remember to charge the battery up completely and have the charger plugged in before starting anything to do with your operating system, as an uncharged battery and low voltage can cause you to foul up the set up sensing on all sorts of things ......

Since already know your Win 10 is unreliably slow on the 17" machine, I'd tell Mint to take over the whole hard drive during set up.    Dual booting with Win 10 is a lose lose proposition as Win 10 will attempt to remove Mint as "unauthorized software" periodically during Win 10 updates and this will totally break your machine each time Win 10 tries to take over everything.

Plus, sharing resources on a system that can't even hold Win 10 by itself is pretty much built to fail.    Mint by itself is about 1/5 the size of Win 10 and you will find it really moves well when Mint is installed alone by itself on that same hardware and memory that could not quite handle Win 10 by itself.

I jacked my own thread, I often do that because I can.

Nor do I care if the thread wanders around some.

Noteable quote of the day about Linux Mint versions ----- this comes from the Mint maintainers themselves, so it is trustworthy enough I guess.

"Linux Mint is also involved in the development of MATE, a classic desktop environment which is the continuation of GNOME 2, Linux Mint’s default desktop between 2006 and 2011. Although it misses a few features and its development is slower than Cinnamon’s, MATE runs faster, uses less resources and is more stable than Cinnamon."

To this recommendation I will add "Of all the distros Mint Mate most closely resembles Windows XP and Windows 7 --- and Mint Mate has maintained the quick keystroke command combinations that were made famous by those older Windows versions.   The structure of Mint Mate continues the classical Windows traditions and of the entire lot it looks and feels most like XP and Win 7."

These are actually some pretty strong recommendations for us older computer users.

So , What about internet protection ?    I've been running the paid for version of Avast with good results.    What does the Mint do for Virus Protection … or … will Avast and Mint "Co-exist"  ?

Title: Re: What neat stuff are you getting for Christmas
Post by Oldfeller on 12/21/18 at 11:20:12

Oh do pay close attention while I grab on to your brain and twist your world around some .......

Linux Mint (and all the Linux browser softwares when properly installed and kept current by installing their little green shield updates promptly) have very few handles for windows malwares to even try to attack and grab on to.   Those little green shield updates cover the OS and all the free software you get from the Software Manager -- it is one cohesive update system.

And It Isn't Windows so none of the things you used Avast for will even work on Linux Mint.   It is naturally immune to them.

As a matter of fact, ALL COMMERCIAL LINUX ANTI-VIRUS products exist simply to protect the windows machines on your network that you may eventually interact with from getting a windows virus transmitted through a Linux machine somehow.

The Linux Kernel and the Mint distro itself has all the active Linux virus protections built into it and these are kept current by Linus and the maintainer boys --- skilled and dedicated folks who have a firm habit of completely eradicating any virus like stuff within mere days of it being discovered.   Something is found that can hurt a Linux machine, they immediately change the Linux kernel so that exploit simply cannot work any more ....... ever.

So, you don't need to do Avast or anything else on Linux Mint.

You don't need to scan for malware every few months.   I had installed Clam AV on my machine (FOSS software from the Software Manager) just to protect other users running windows machines, but I really don't need an antivirus on my Mint machine at all.   Clam AV didn't require me to do scans or anything else, it just dropped a mini window a few times to say what it had just killed and they were all Windows Natural illnesses that could not have hurt me on Linux Mint anyway.

You don't need to defragment or compress or "clean up your hard drive" again, ever.   Your hard drive's formatting will be changed during the "take over the entire hard drive" installation to a Linux hard drive format that does not get clogged up or slow down, ever.   It is a self-correcting format and it never needs attention paid to it ever again.

Your Linux operating system does not get old or slow down over time, it does not degrade at all during the period of time between major upgrades.

Linux upgrades do not cause problems nor do they require "more resources" -- the opposite is true as Linux speed improvements over time are the rule of thumb, not the windows like long term performance decay you are used to seeing.

==================================================

I actually felt plumb LAZY when I first went to Linux Mint because I didn't have to spend time doing routine "proper machine maintenance" all the time like I had to do on Windows.

And I can vouch that Linux Mint machines really don't slow down or get crapped up over the years like a Windows machine.

And no, you won't really believe it either, until about 5 years or so have gone by ......

Here are a couple of websites that list all the Linux viruses "found in the wild".  Please note the end date on many of them as that is when the kernel was fixed so they simply cannot be any more.   Also note that some are internet based viruses that exist on the web or on Windows machines and can be re-transmitted endlessly, but do not really affect Linux machines any longer since kernel fixes were put in place.

You want to repair your windows boot menu / boot sequence.

What flavor of Windows are you running?

Are you dual booting with Linux or are you "old windows natural"?

Title: Re: What neat stuff are you getting for Christmas

If I recall correctly that particular machine was and XP machine. I just want to get into the computer to retrieve some data and from there leave it as a Linux machine.

Post by Oldfeller on 12/21/18 at 13:01:41

Go get a Linux CD or DVD, pop it in the drive and let the machine boot off of the optical drive.

Now you can use Linux to poke around inside the hard drive and you can make copies of what you need to get off the machine.

Then, once you have got your stuff off the machine, let the Linux DVD fully install the software and tell it to "take the entire hard drive".

or, go download an XP based boot sector repair tool off the web and fix your old boot sector and boot sequence, then use XP to copy all the files you want preserved.

If you still have your original XP disks, they can "repair your boot sector on your hard drive" as a menu option on the installation disk.

Optical drives on the XP box --- CD or DVD?

Modern linux distros come on DVDs due to size now-a-days and some XP machines lacked both DVD drives and USB ports (they weren't invented yet).

To start a Linux Mint Mate 19.1 version DVD ISO image to downloading, go here ---- pick one of the USA based mirrors and it should start the DVD ISO to downloading and it will take about 10 minutes to complete (less if your connection is better than average).

If CD only, that is a bit of an issue.

You are now old enough (going back far enough) you need to know if you have a 64 bit processor or not --- XP is old enough that some Intel processors were still 32 bit only.

Heck, XP did not even become a real 64 bit OS until Service Pack 2 came out ......

When you have your processor identified, go here and order an appropriate DVD disk.   WARNING:  Mint 19.1 doesn't come on CDs any more, it is too big since it carries all the software you would generally ever want with it.

If you have a USB port on your machine you can also get the stuff on a bootable 16 GB USB 2.0 drive.    They say old USB 1.0 drives can still read this 16 gig USB 2.0 drive from these folks, but it will just do it a lot slower .....  but that is something to think about a bit since this jump drive system costs relatively more money .....

https://www.shoplinuxonline.com/linux-usb.html

XP has a whole set of various obsolescent things clustered all around it .....

Here is an XP class expansion slot USB 2.0 port card for $18 bucks .....   It should come with a drivers disk that also allows the use of bootable USB devices, if not you can get a driver off the web somewhere.    Early XP predates both DVDs and bootable USB drives, so don't count on them being driver supported on a  very old XP machine unless you put the drivers on there yourself.

Zipidachimp,

I go through the same song and dance routine every time folks get ready to waste their money "upgrading" their Windows machines by blowing $500-$600  on yet another "new and improved" Wintel machine.

I used to have to try to convince them to use the right oil in their Savage and to get rid of their vacuum actuated petcocks and go get a Raptor petcock too.

Acceptance comes ........   slowly but surely.

I feel that old men take about 20 repetitions before they start to learn something radically new .......   but if it is couched in self-interest terms they can start to get a handle on it then they get curious and want to try it out.

Then you help them do that as much as you can.

It helps when the converted will chime in and tell them to believe it ......  they don't you know, believe it.

Mainly because Mickey has very carefully created this "total dependency" mildset and they really think they can't live without Mickey's little weekly updated disaster running on their machines.

They cannot imagine not having to do clean ups, defrags and re-compressions as a routine rote kind of maintenance thing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFoY7pxWJa4        It is a YouTube, just watch it.

Watch this just to get caught up with what might be coming out in a few weeks at CES 2019.    This guy is excited, can you tell he's excited ???

There will be new stuff coming out from AMD that buries Intel and NVIDIA completely.    Stuff that buries Intel's roadmap they just released going out past Intel's promised 5 years out into the future.    OVERCOME BY EVENTS ......  passe' ...... obsoleted    <flooosh>

TSMC says they have plenty of 7nm EUV burn capacity to support this roll out because NVIDIA isn't ordering anything new right now because they had grossly over produced their old graphics cards (for data mining uses) but are now insisting on wanting to sell the old stuff out first before making anything else new.

Dump all your old trash, NVIDIA --- dump it now.   If you don't, AMD will simply replace you in the market place with better products at half the cost and you NVIDIA will still be holding all your last years obsoleted video cards.

Intel will have to REACT at ONCE to this next year, getting out of their rut finally ...... hopefully anyway.     or not, as the case may be

Or at the end of CES this year the Fat Lady may quietly walk up to the mike and sing softly in memory of Intel, finally at last.

Tiny Christmas tree.
Only 6 ornaments.
White bear rug.
A single large box with the bottom half of a woman sticking out.
Hmmmm.
Either she is diving for a diamond ring in the bottom of the box, or he faked her out, wracked her on the back of her head and is doing away with her.

Interesting.   [ch128527]

Seems like there should be a good bit more female torso in that particular box, so either the box has no bottom and the blond fur rug is raised up in the air a foot or so to make up that illusion ---- or else you only got about half a woman there .........

Merry Christmas, huh ????

Got a couple "gifts" this year. Found a 1915 Kar 98 Mauser small ring rifle while wandering around a flea market a month ago. It had the stock cut down and was re barreled to .243 Winchester. Took it home for $80.00 and it's cleaning up nicely considering it's over 100 years old and is a Frankenmauser made out of mixed parts.
The lot next door sold and when they were cleaning out the storage shed a 17 foot fiberglass canoe ended up in my possession. It's going to be my crabbing boat for the Halifax River and estuaries in the area. Setting it up as a solo mid seated canoe with a kayak paddle. Hope I don't tip it over too many times and the crabbing is good.
My bigger is getting rid of my 2003 Tahoe which had 186K miles on it and trading it in for a 2017 four door Silverado short bed pickup. Picking up the new truck tomorrow from the dealer and will be putting a cap on it  asap. I hate to get rid of the Tahoe, it still runs fine but it's time to move on before something major breaks.
The best gift this year was another year of good health and my left shoulder which had a torn muscle has finally gotten better after 8 months.
Merry Christmas All ;)

I've never seen it. Never even been in a canoe, so, don't laugh, but would using pieces of pipe insulation on the gunwales help?

Might do some outriggers if needed. I used to canoe about 40 years ago and hope I've still got it. The canoe has a 35 inch beam which is a wide glide so shouldn't be too tippy. A quick dip when it's in the upper 90's could  be refreshing.

Nope.....I am at work right now!

I am supposed to be working only 20 hours a week - but I seem to be here about 35 hours a week.  That will change in 2019, as I will have less catching up to do.

It's 150 sq.m. (~1500 sq.ft.) on 2 floors (most unusual and luxurious in Italy)
has wooden floors (parquet) and my very own den !

Where are your pictures currently located?   What device?

If it is computer to computer, use the SD card or jump drive method then once they are COPIED OVER TO THE JUMP DRIVE/SD CARD, THEN COPIED FROM THE JUMP DRIVE/SD CARD TO YOUR NEW MACHINE your JUMP DRIVE/SD CARD then acts as your emergency backup in case of some really bad issue taking place with your new machine and your old machine, with both of them packing it in at the same time.

Don't laugh, Microsoft can foul them both up with nightly updates that go very very wrong all at the same time.    You could be very happy to have the pics on a jump drive right about then.

I agree with Oldfeller, have those files backed up on an SD drive, you never know what can happen.

After 10 days, it should be there.   I know the mail gets messed up by the Christmas rush, the Christmas days off and then the New Year's holiday, but 10 days should be enough time for it to trickle on through the post office.

Let me know if it is lost, I can start a new disk headed your way ......

===================================================

New shipment was sent Jan 1    If the old shipment in the clear case is damaged or is something stupid is wrong with it like postage due just refuse it knowing the new one is on the way.

Get all the old data you want off the 17" laptop machine, pictures, etc. and COPY the data files on a jump drive so they can be copied to wherever you want them and also be preserved afterwards using the jump drive as a data safe.

Remember to charge your old laptop up all the way and hook up whatever mouse or USB hub or whatever else you like to use before cold booting the machine with the DVD in the drive.   Make sure the 17" laptop's WiFi is light lit and your router is on so the machine will go ahead and set that portion up as well too.

You can unhook things and turn things off after it is running, and they will remain set up & working properly for whenever you want to use them by plugging the stuff back in.

During installation routine, pick a VERY SHORT dirt simple easy to type password and remember to tell Mint to "take the whole hard drive" and you will get a brand new Linux HD format and a complete Linux hard drive file system installed, a completely modern system that doesn't require maintenance, file defrag nor re-compression nor any form of virus scanning.

Servers use this sort of hard drive system for a reason, you know  ......  a server needs to run 24/7 for like 10 years without needing attention so that is what the Linux guys built.

;)

Getting into the DVD cardboard package ---- look for the dotted side edge on the cardboard square and use a pair of scissors to trim off the last 1/8" of that edge to free the disk without damaging it.   Take care not to clip the edge of the disk.   Sticking a knife in there to slice it open isn't a good idea because you could scratch up or gouge the DVD read surface.

Once you have trimmed most of the dotted edge you can rip open the remaining cardboard if need be, as it will be very weak and easy to tear along the dotted line.   Once again, take care not to clip the edge of the disk

MM, I do that too, mislay something and then have to ask the wife where I left it.

Sending Anders off has got to be hard, and is likely to get more hard as it sinks in.

Sending Anders to the Airforce is good and can form a good base to his life going forward.

NO   , I never knew of it , whoever checks the mail "knows" , everybody else is in the dark !  ::)

We got Anders off to Texas (Good Fellow AFB) and now things around the house can slow down a little.   He took the new Dell Windows (8.1) with him and a new phone w/unlimited everything to use as a "Hot-Spot".   He also has my Netflix password and it connects to his PS4 , so he should be a lot happier in his Private 2 bed room , kitchen , common room apartment.  He is so lucky !  ;)

Yep, I would say Anders is as far ahead of the game starting out as I was when I was pushing 35 --- of course that was back when some of this stuff got invented .....

  ;D

Post when you get the 17" laptop charged up and are ready to give it a Linux Mint Mate 19.1 install attempt.

You are going for a total cold boot on a laptop, so you will put the DVD in, shut the drive then turn the machine OFF, pull the charger to laptop connector, then pull the battery and give the laptop a few minutes to completely drain whatever capacitors etc. are charged up, then put the battery back in and turn it back on.    You want all of Windows to be dead, power drained away and totally turned off when the Mint Install boot cycle starts.

Mint Install should find the DVD drive and start up a SOMEWHAT SLOW DETECTION CYCLE, carefully determining what hardware you have and teeing up the bits and pieces of 19.1 Mint OS software to match your machine exactly.   This partially occurs both before and during the full install as the machine has to be recognized pretty well to get the desktop going.

The machine will boot into the stock Mint Mate desktop and it will have an Install Linux Mint icon on the home screen.   Click that to start up the Mint Install software.   Stand by to answer questions as the machine gets to the various stages.

If you get asked specific questions or asked for special permissions during this detection portion, POST THEM as they assume you know more about the Linux Mint OS than you currently know.

You can look the questions up on the Linux Mint internet forums to go get some instant help.   Go to the Mint forums and post what shows up on the screen and you will get a selection of answers for older version that may be helpful.

You may see some of the responses come from the Ubuntu Forums, this is OK because Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS versions.

And don't worry, if you go ahead and try something and it doesn't work out, no biggie, just start over from a battery out of the machine total cold boot with the DVD sitting in the drive with the door closed again ......

When you start seeing time zone choices and dual boot choices, go slow, pick the right time zone and TELL MINT TO TAKE OVER THE WHOLE HARD DRIVE 100% FOR A FULL COMPLETE LINUX MINT INSTALLATION.   Remember, no dual boot.   0% Mickey ....

The thing that screws up most newbies is leaving any form of MS dual boot set up and good 'ol MS still visits the machine at night intentionally messing things up over time ......   This represents 85% of all newbie issues, BTW.

Mickey likes to reserve over half your hard drive and 75% of your systems resources for Windows to use -- even it it isn't supposed to be running.

So, to make things simple, get Mickey off the machine, totally.

Things that might well cause MS to destroy your installation disk or your machine's file system are not going to be a problem for a Linux only machine --- you might get a kernel panic and a detailed message telling you what the error was, not some blue screen of death with no usable information about what just took place and a machine that will not boot.

MS just loves to invalidate your installation media then Mickey tells you to go buy a new one from the Microsoft Store --- you are obviously a software pirate after all ....

My bet is that all proceeds normally .... and you get your first Linux Mint Mate install with no problems.

P.S.   The Mint Online manuals are here if you want them ......           https://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php

MM, a couple of things I've noticed since mainly using Linux. I'm dual booted and not ready to go whole hog Linux.
1/ Your AT key becomes your INVERTED COMMA key and vice versa, you may have to get used to this when sending emails.
2/ You may experience Google crashes, however you will get frequent Google stability updates, install these and the crashes will stop. It probably does no great harm to install all Linux updates, even if a lot of them are in wierd languge.  You will see the little update shield turn blue when updates are available.
3/ Printing. Linux will ask you to set up your printer when you wish to use this. Click on ADMINSTRATION in the menu and printers should appear on the other side of the menu screen, click on this and do what it tells you. Ensure there are NO JOBS in the printer during set up.
4/ Scanning. Click on GRAPHICS in the menu and SIMPLE SCAN should appear on the other side. If you are scanning documents a trap is PNG files which are large and won't appear on sites where there is a 2MB limit on files. Simple scan only has a cropping tool and doesn't have some of the Windows enhancment features. There could be other scanning programmes in Linux.
5/ Fonts. If you use the LIBRE OFFICE programme, the font names are weird to say the least. There are a number in the programme and you can click on ACCESSORIES in the menu for more. FONT VIEWER  should appear on the other side  and you can scroll through a number. How you get them into the LIBRE OFFICE programme is a mystery to me.
6/ Photographs. On OF's suggestion I'm using GOOGLE DRIVE to get these out of a Samsung Android cell phone into Linux. This has been a steep learning curve, for an illiterate like me but I'm getting better at it. I'm not prepared to try and tell you how to go about it.
Hope this is of use, but if you are going 100% Linux it may not be necessary.

For those who asked ---- hijacking a thread that I started pretty much isn't possible .....  I tell the folks that I am helping with Linux Mint to drop into what ever thread that I have started with their question as they need an answer and I hijack my own posts worse than anybody else can anyway.

At one point a year or so ago I was asked to not start so many new threads, so I now use generic titles and cover more stuff with appended posts so I generally only have a few new threads a week.   Since my threads are generic and old guys meander anyway, it all works out.

Somebody else's thread, be polite as always and don't hijack other people's threads -- go hijack one of mine.

You will also get other people chiming in to be helping you, and that is great too.

This is for MM and the other folks who are on the edge of actually DOING IT.

I remember being there and basically hanging fire for a while because I doubted.

I doubted me, my ability to read the screens and to make a good decision.

I doubted basically if I could live without Mickeysoft, as everything I knew was mickey this and mickey that ......  which is why I suggest Mint Mate to people because it obeys most of the precepts that all the old mickey users are well used to.

So, for encouragement of the newpersons,  I got permission to quote the last person who made the trip down the rabbit hole, he wrote me back using Mint Mate 19.1 and the Chrome Browser that he got only last week .....

Just a quick note OF to tell you, this new OS works great. I'm able to do just about everything with it. This older computer was practically unusable, but I was able to download chrome, and that runs good on it. Music and videos also play good, saving pictures and making files. The 32  bit version I had before didn't work well , but this one does . The only drawback is that I don't think you can do HR Block online to file your taxes, because they might only be compatible with windows and Apple. That's not a problem tho.    Well thanks again .....

So, in short --- yes you can do it.    You gotta charge it up good and just go do it.

H&R Block is an expensive beastie of a tax software that you pay for every year.   If you are running Linux Mint Mate and using Chrome Browser you can use TaxHawk software on line and only pay $10-$15 to do your taxes, complete with on line filing.   And you can do it safely, protected by Chrome's deeply secure Sandboxing and Linux's  invulnerability to Windows style net-jackings.

Heck, you can do your banking on line too, protected in the same ways.

Remember, you are still using Chrome browser --- if it will do H&R Block on a Windows machine it should work exactly the same way on your Linux box, just a lot more securely.
