Title: favorite shock replacement
Post by dustystranger on 12/06/18 at 19:13:40

Hey Dave, so glad to read your opinion on what makes a "better" shock upgrade.  I read all the posts on how great the 412 was.  So I tried them and yeah, not so great.  Something designed for a 550 lb bike is gonna have too much damping for the savage.  Any better than stock?  Well they are taller.  I had a pair of PS 14s laying around from the 650 days.  With 90/140 springs they were ok, but a little weak on the damping.  The stock shocks have proper springs and damping but just not enough travel.  Mind you, I do what you call "normal" riding.  I tried a set of gz250 shocks.  I like em a lot.  For under $50 delivered they are the best deal I have found.  It will be interesting to see the feedback we get from people using the gz250 shocks.

The GZ250 shocks are the same low-spec shocks found on the LS650 - just a different length and spring rate. They provide poor compression and rebound damping. As a general rule, if you are looking to improve the suspension, avoid twin-tube design shocks.

If you are looking for a plush ride and consistent performance, a gas filled or reservoir shock would be a significant upgrade from a twin-tube design.
