Title: After Harley Davidson muffler what do I need?
Post by kylejang on 11/16/18 at 17:05:55

Hi Everyone.
As part of my winter project I just replaced Harley muffler.
Do I need white spacer modification? I think part# is 65747-94
and I think it is Dyna muffler.
Please let me know what is next step.
Also I switched to raptor petcock.
I am still thinking whether I should check for tensioner.
I don't really hear rattling noise.

How many miles?
What year model?
How's it running?

It's 2008 with 15806 km(9821miles).
With Dyna muffler lots of backfire.

I have the same muffler with a stock air box.
I changed the 145 main jet to 150 and shaved the white spacer from original 2.8 mm to 2.2 mm thickness
Pilot needle is now open 2 turns.
Bike runs well at those settings  very little crackle and pop and smooth acceleration from idle position
Still gives a poof on shut down
Fuel consumption  4.7L/ 100 Km

Read about it in the Tech Section....... What you do with the white spacer mod,  is highly dependent on your elevation above sea level, which is why we often ask your location. Hiko suggests the use of a 150 main jet ,and I agree ,it's a rather a standard( good all around) jet to use with the Dyna muffler on a stock motor (I do).

Thank everyone.
I read but I couldn't find chart or how much I should remove white spacer. My elevation is between 170(560 ft) to 200m (660 ft).
I live in Toronto, Canada.
Any suggestions for white spacer mod? 1/3, 1/2 or no cut?

If you can find some small washers (stainless steel or brass) with the same inside and outside diameters as the spacer then you can experiment with different thicknesses by stacking the washers.

I'm at sea level and found that about 0.5 to 0.6 of the stock thickness works well. By memory that was about 3 - 4 SS washers.

I would start with about 0.6 and see how it runs for a while. Reducing the thickness makes the bike run richer. I kept reducing the number of washers until it felt like it was running a bit too rich (it started to feel a little sluggish). Then I added one washer back in.

I only get the occasional pop, from the exhaust, on deceleration or gear change , on a crisp spring morning. Apart from that it runs great.

Keep in mind that running richer will affect your mileage.

Find a good hardware store with steel #4 machine screw washers.  Remove the white spacer and put in 3 washers where the spacer used to be.  If you discover the bike still has a lean surge just off idle.....remove 1 washer.

(Brass washers have too large OD to fit into the recess in the slide).

I should have put my elevation in my previous post my elevation is sea level to around 800 ft  normally

I am at 500 - 825.  My bike ran great with a #150 main, #50 pilot, and my initial try of 3 washers had a slight lean surge at low throttle settings.  I removed 1 washer and tried 2......and it ran great (stock air cleaner and Dyna muffler).

Most bikes run fine with 3 washers....mine didn't.

Hi again.  I just cleaned up Carb and replaced white spacer with 3 washers. Also all the jet screws are stock. This mean I should replace jet screws?  And not tighten pilot jet will be benefit for backfire?

This link will have what you need to know:

Also refer to Batman's recommendations for main jet, and pilot jet sizes.

As for the air-mix screw, if you turn it all the way clockwise, then back it off 1.5 turns - that should give you a good starting point.

When I prepared to tune my carb, I ordered two jets smaller, and two jets larger, than the stock jets (pilot and main). They were only a few dollars each. Then I was able to use the method described in the link to experiment until I got it right - for me!

Thank you. I read the link above now I am totally understood how the carburetor actually works.
When next spring comes I am going to experiment jets.
Thank you, guys. You guys rock.

Hello. I really need help again. I installed raptor petcock, 3 washers, 150 main jet and fuel mixture screw 2 turn. Now I am having 2 problems, first engine dies when I downshift from 2nd gear to 1st gear when I shut off the the throttle . It dies very smoothly.
Second when I cold start with choke, bike dies too without choke it doesn't die
This is called lean surge? Should I remove 1 washer?  By the way I bought raptor petcock from Amazon is this could be petcock issue?  Please let me know what I need to fix. Thank you everyone.

May be too rich at idle.

If it dies with choke but runs without it, think about it this way: Choke cuts off the air to the carb making the mixture extra rich (less oxygen can get in) to help start and warm the bike.  So, if yours will not run when you pull the choke to RICHEN the mixture but runs well with no choke when the mixture is LEANER then that tells you something.

Is the raptor a genuine Yamaha or chinese knock-off. If it isn't genuine Yamaha then that is the start of your problem and that needs to be addressed before you chase the carb settings.

Make sure your idle is properly adjusted.  Needs to be around 1100 rpm if I recall and that WILL NOT sound like a Harley. (It's a much higher idle than a typical HD.)

Generally speaking, it's not the best practice to change several things at once.  It's a lot easier to diagnose issues when you only make one change at a time.

I just switch back to original suzuki petcock and engine dies same way so I think petcock is not a issue here and I will buy new raptor petcook from dealership. Once again when I am shifting 2nd to 1st gear when clutch is fully disengage and gas throttle is off(I didn't try at other gear) engine dies.  After switch back to original when cold start without choke bike dies and with choke stay alive Toronto is still cold so I think original petcock is ok. What will be my next step to ride bike this spring?

I had the same problem with the bike dying when I dropped the revs. My issue was that I had set the idle to low ... As Ohiomoto said "Make sure your idle is properly adjusted."
