He was essentially fired. "At your request...." is a polite way of acknowledging a firing.

I suspect Trump didn't want an election day issue so he waited. Now the new AG will be in a position to counter any issues from the Mueller report which is probably coming soon. Sessions recused himself not only from anything Russia, but also anything Clinton. That was a problem. Trump wants an AG who's able to navigate the Mueller report since Hilary is the one who started the whole BS rolling to begin with.

No, that's just utter bullshit you just pulled out of your arse, he recused himself from investigations into the Trump campaign because he was part of it and lied to the FBI about his interactions with the Russians. Nothing at all to do with Clinton.

Yes, there will be links to Russians in Trump's taxes. I'm sure that's why he's not releasing them. They could very well be totally innocent links or at least links to actions not traitorous. However, seeing the lengths of lying the Democrats on the judicial committee went over Kavanaugh with the media's assistance, any Russian activity on his taxes will be spun to such a degree that gang rapes organized by a high school jr over an entire summer will pale in comparison. It took me a while to figger out what you were saying because it looked like you were disagreeing and then agreeing.

But I see now you are separating the Russian interference from the collusion aspect, but in essence they are separate but they are also intertwined. But the collusion is the more serious issue here and if there was collusion that's treason, and needs to be investigated and there's so much smoke there's gotta be a fire somewhere.

Remember, there's no such a law as being charged with 'collusion', it's all the aspects of what was done. Then there's the obstruction of justice, and the justice depart is supposed to be non political, hands off especially from the president. Trump's complains about all the people he hires.

Department heads are appointed by, and serve at the pleasure of the President. They can likewise be fired at the pleasure of the President, at any time and for any reason.

It's one of the prerequisites of being the President, any President.

The interim AG, Matthew Whittaker, is apparently not a big fan of either Mueller, or Clinton, and is, at least for the time being, Rod Rosenstein's boss.

Just the beginning of some interesting stuff that's going to happen between now and January.
