Title: Options for replacement carb Post by Gyrobob on 10/04/18 at 15:28:35 Let's say you have been trying to sort out some carb issues on a RYCA bike (not mine). You are sick of fiddling with it, and you don't have the time and/or advanced skills and/or equipment to sort it out. Funding is not a large issue. So,... "To h*ll with it!!" You decide to just get a brand new carb. What are the options? -- Buy a replacement carb from Suzuki? --- Are they available? Order it or Dealer stock? I'll bet they COST!!! --- How much are they? --- They'd have to be modded as per typical RYCA builds. -- Buy a newer technology carb that might have better performance or be easier to tune? --- What "improved" carbs are available? --- How much are they? --- What sources are there for these carbs? --- Modding these carbs for a RYCA bike might take some experimentaton. -- A rebuilt stock Suzuki LS650 carb? --- What "rebuilt" carbs are available? --- How much are they? --- What sources are there for these carbs? --- Does anyone here rebuild carbs for a reasonable fee? Title: Re: Options for replacement carb Post by Dave on 10/21/18 at 04:00:17 I really don't think you want to try and afford a new stock carb....they are extremely expensive and good used one are pretty easy to find. The Savage engine is in a very mild state of tune, and a good clean stock carb is a proven performer. A #50 or #52.5 pilot, #150 main and 3 washers to replace the white spacer and you should be good to go. I don't think the RYCA filter throws the recommended jetting too far out of wack (however the RYCA filter does appear to be a lot more restrictive at higher engine speeds and it may affect jetting and HP). If the carb you are working on is clean....it should work just as well as the carb on your RYCA. The carb kit Lancer sells is a very reliable Mikuni Round slide. It jets pretty easy and mine ran right out of the box - however I did change jet combinations a few times before I was satisfied with the performance. I have a big foam air cleaner and a megaphone exhaust with baffles that I built (your choice of filter and muffler can affect jetting). This carb does not have a TEV valve, so you need to teach your throttle hand how to control the rumble on deceleration....there is no TEV valve to do that for you. When decelerating or between shifts you need to learn not to let the throttle snap completely closed - you just need to roll it off a bit and hold it open just enough to keep the popping and cracking at a minimum. You also need to learn to "roll" the throttle open when accelerating and not just instantly crack it open from low rpm.....you have no CV slide to control the engine intake vacuum and you will get better performance if you don't put the engine into a situation where the vacuum is suddenly lowered and the carb has trouble pulling fuel out of the float bowl and through the jets. The round slide carb provides a bit more of a "direct" connection between the throttle and the engine - things happen a bit faster and response is slightly quicker. But as I stated earlier - there is no TEV or CV slide to help you.....you need to learn better throttle control to keep the engine happy and avoid excessive exhaust noise. |

If your using the exhaust system from Ryca, and a pod filter directly on the carb, that may be the problem, rather than the stock carb, and changing carbs might not help . |

Now it is hard to start, and just doesn't run very well. The carb has been apart a few times. RYCA air filter mounted directly on the carb. RYCA exhaust. Otherwise the motor is stock. We did the cam chain tensioner mod a thousand miles ago. I don't necessarily want him to change the carb, but he is fed up and is of the mindset that if this carb is dumped, the mystery problems will go away when starting from scratch. |
