Title: Keyless chucks Post by justin_o_guy2 on 09/04/18 at 23:20:20 Sukk.. Anyone have a corded 3/8 drill that works? |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Armen on 09/05/18 at 02:41:05 You want a corded drill with a keyless chuck? I have one with a keyed chuck that I never use. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Serowbot on 09/05/18 at 06:22:13 Yup,.. I can never get them to hold the bit... I'm still using my Dad's old Craftsmen with keyed chuck from the 70's... |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Gary_in_NJ on 09/05/18 at 06:39:51 I have several corded keyed and several cordless keyless. I can't think of the last time I grabbed a corded drill. I thing the trick to getting a tight hold on the bit is to use high speed and a firm grip while locking the bit. Could it be that your keyless is broken/defective? |

No! Not even!! I don't like keyless.. I want a corded, 3/8, reversible, with a key. And I have done that WFO slam on the Chuck.. Phhht, I started off being nice, just cranking on it by hand, but they get loose in mere seconds, |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by GOF on 09/05/18 at 14:11:35 I have been using Ridgid cordless drills for a while now. Never have an issue. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by justin_o_guy2 on 09/05/18 at 15:04:08 My craftsman cordless is crap. I actually want a corded drill. Sometimes I run one for polishing and things |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by verslagen1 on 09/05/18 at 15:36:47 I've never had any trouble with mine. It's the keyed ones that give me trouble. maybe the gears are gummed up, spray some lube in there. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by raydawg on 09/05/18 at 17:29:29 I use Rigid as well, love them..... Jacob chucks were/are the best. |

Too late on the corded drill. SIL went to town with channel locks. I tried to get the set screw out to swap it for a keyed chuck, I guess I will try again.. And if I twist it off, meh, so what? Eh? |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Armen on 09/06/18 at 02:50:57 Screw holding the chuck on is a left hand thread. Chuck is a right hand thread. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by justin_o_guy2 on 09/06/18 at 03:20:03 Thanks Armen, it's been years since I had to mess with that. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Todd James on 09/06/18 at 06:17:52 I use Rigid as well. The keyless chuck grips as tightly as any keyed chuck I've ever used. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by Dave on 09/06/18 at 06:38:39 I believe that there are good and bad keyless chucks. I have several different drills - but only 2 with keyless chucks. One is my Bosch battery drill that is 15 years old - the other one is a Milwaukee 1/2" drill......these keyless chucks work very well. I did have a DeWalt drill with a keyless chuck that did not work well, and it was replaced under warranty.....but it never did work all that well. I may have one or two of those keyless chucks around.......if I do you are welcome to be the new owner of them. I bet if you bought this......it would be the last 3/8" drill you buy in your lifetime. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-3-8-in-2800-RPM-Magnum-Drill-0233-20/100032177?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CG%7CBase%7CD25T%7C25-9_PORTABLE+POWER%7CNA%7CPLA%7c71700000034127218%7c58700003933021540%7c92700031755124727&gclid=CjwKCAjwoMPcBRAWEiwAiAqZh5aQHv-TTHs_GqL-racXidymj5cw6WclS2tJgv9_47IopEQeDAJ84BoCAi0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CPq77tzKpt0CFWJuwQodFZEDkg |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by MMRanch on 09/06/18 at 07:26:40 MY wife bought me a Dewalt cordless, keyless 6 years ago . It's 1/2" , reversible , hammer drill , setting for screws (tork) It is powerful enough to "wrench" itself out of my hands or spin me on my butt if its on high tork setting. Anyway the keyless part works great and ya don't have to hold one ring while ya tighten the other ring. It was over $300.oo but its still works and it gets used at least once a week unless I'm on a ride somewhere. ;) I have several other cordless , keyless , 3/8" , lighter-weight drills (3) for running nuts and bolt , working on vehicles and running screws for hanging pictures and such . They are handy but they aren't real work-horses like the big Harbor Freight has a 12volt cordless/keyless with a triangle looking battery that tightens up good and ya don't have to hold one ring while ya tighten the other one. Extra batteries are only $20.oo . The one I have is Blueish/black . I have one from Wal-mart Tough something 18Volt , but ya have to hold one ring while tightening the other and its light weight but a good nut-runner. It hold the bit good. Perhaps the newer ones have "Fine" threads on the keyless and the older ones had "Course" threads on the keyless chucks. :-/ |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by verslagen1 on 09/06/18 at 07:30:54 BTW, the cheap drills don't have screws to retain the chucks... they're riveted. |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by batman on 09/06/18 at 10:17:44 I use a corded 3/8 Milwaukee hole shooter with a keyless chuck ,It's taken 30 years of abuse ,and never cried Uncle,I've even ground three flats on 1/2 inch drill bits at times and it drove them . I hate cordless , having batteries die in the middle of a project sucks. CRAFTSMEN doesn't make POWER tools they buy them from other makers and slap their name on , and they're junk! |

I I handed you my brushless, keyless, 18volt Ridgid drill I would have to fight you to get it back. It is a beast of a drill. The batteries last a long time. It has power to spare. It is not excessively heavy. The rare occasion I need something heavier I really need something heavier! |
Title: Re: Keyless chucks Post by batman on 09/06/18 at 20:11:23 When the batteries die ,how much do they cost to replace, 50 bucks a piece ? A 30amp 100ft heavy duty extension cord costs about the same and you only have to buy it once, but to each his own. |
