Title: When someone nutshells it..
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/11/18 at 22:41:35

I missed 4 to 1
5 is spot on

Economist Thomas Sowell talks to reporters prior to his appearence on the NBC Television show "Meet the Press" Sunday in Washington, September 20, 1981. (AP Photo/Taylor)

Thomas Sowell is a prolific author and brilliant economist and he is about as good at distilling conservative wisdom into pithy quotes as anyone you will ever read. If you think there’s not enough extraordinary brilliance left in the world, let me introduce you to Thomas Sowell, one of the greatest minds of our generation….

30. “The problem isn’t that Johnny can’t read. The problem isn’t even that Johnny can’t think. The problem is that Johnny doesn’t know what thinking is; he confuses it with feeling.”

29. “One of the consequences of such notions as ‘entitlements’ is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”

28. “Each new generation born is in effect an invasion of civilization by little barbarians, who must be civilized before it is too late.”

27. "Virtually no idea is too ridiculous to be accepted, even by very intelligent and highly educated people, if it provides a way for them to feel special and important. Some confuse that feeling with idealism."

26. "I wonder what radical feminists make of the fact that it was men who created the rule of 'women and children first' when it came to rescuing people from life-threatening emergencies.”

25. “The word ‘racism’ is like ketchup. It can be put on practically anything — and demanding evidence makes you a ‘racist.’”

24. “To believe in personal responsibility would be to destroy the whole special role of the anointed, whose vision casts them in the role of rescuers of people treated unfairly by ‘society.’”

23. “What sense would it make to classify a man as handicapped because he is in a wheelchair today, if he is expected to be walking again in a month and competing in track meets before the year is out? Yet Americans are given ‘class’ labels on the basis of their transient location in the income stream. If most Americans do not stay in the same broad income bracket for even a decade, their repeatedly changing ‘class’ makes class itself a nebulous concept.”

SPONSORED

22. "There is much discussion of the haves and the have-nots, but very little discussion of the doers and the do-nots, those who contribute and those who merely take."

21. "It would be hard to think of a more ridiculous way to make decisions than to transfer those decisions to third parties who pay no price for being wrong. Yet that is what at least half of the bright ideas of the political left amount to."

20. "When you want to help people, you tell them the truth. When you want to help yourself, you tell them what they want to hear. People with careers as ethnic leaders usually tell their followers what they want to hear."

19. "'We are a nation of immigrants,' we are constantly reminded. We are also a nation of people with ten fingers and ten toes. Does that mean that anyone who has ten fingers and ten toes should be welcomed and given American citizenship?"

18. “It is amazing how many people think that the government's role is to give them what they want by overriding what other people want.”

17. “Those who cry out that the government should 'do something' never even ask for data on what has actually happened when the government did something, compared to what actually happened when the government did nothing.”

16. “Four things have almost invariably followed the imposition of controls to keep prices below the level they would reach under supply and demand in a free market: (1) increased use of the product or service whose price is controlled, (2) Reduced supply of the same product or service, (3) quality deterioration, (4) black markets.”

15. “Much of the social history of the Western world, over the past three decades, has been a history of replacing what worked with what sounded good.”

14. “Weighing benefits against costs is the way most people make decisions – and the way most businesses make decisions, if they want to stay in business. Only in government is any benefit, however small, considered to be worth any cost, however large.”

13. “Considering how often throughout history even intelligent people have been proved to be wrong, it is amazing that there are still people who are convinced that the only reason anyone could possibly say something different from what they believe is stupidity or dishonesty.”

12. "Since this is an era when many people are concerned about 'fairness' and 'social justice,' what is your 'fair share' of what someone else has worked for?"

11. "For the anointed, traditions are likely to be seen as the dead hand of the past, relics of a less enlightened age, and not as the distilled experience of millions who faced similar human vicissitudes before."

10. "It is amazing how many of the intelligentsia call it 'greed' to want to keep what you have earned, but not greed to want to take away what somebody else has earned, and let politicians use it to buy votes."

9. “If you cannot achieve equality of performance among people born to the same parents and raised under the same roof, how realistic is it to expect to achieve it across broader and deeper social divisions?”

8. "It is amazing how many people think that they can answer an argument by attributing bad motives to those who disagree with them. Using this kind of reasoning, you can believe or not believe anything about anything, without having to bother to deal with facts or logic."

7. “Experience trumps brilliance.”

6. “There is usually only a limited amount of damage that can be done by dull or stupid people. For creating a truly monumental disaster, you need people with high IQs.”

5. "There are few modest talents so richly rewarded — especially in politics and the media — as the ability to portray parasites as victims, and portray demands for preferential treatment as struggles for equal rights."

What a  Excellent List.  I have copied it, saved it, and will use a appropriate quote, (giving credit), when writing letters communicating with those that I PAY.

One I will use right Now, which is SO germane, to a couple of posters:
“The word ‘racism’ is like ketchup. It can be put on practically anything”

So the next time a person says one is ‘raciest’, because they are proud of this country,
One can just say: ‘Ketchup”

;D   ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D

I don't see anyone using a logical argument against any of these.

 What is there to argue?

DEpends on whether one is an idiot or not.

By your definition or clinically diagnosed?

Well, isn't general motors a refutation of #7, where the experienced GM staff kept churning out future overpriced collectables -really pieces of donkie shiiite in the 70's until some bright people from Japan made better and more reliable cars and almost put GM out of business?

My definition has been working for a long time.

Which would you care to dissect?
Does earning a blue ribbon and being forced to share it bother you?

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by MnSpring on 07/14/18 at 10:17:54

If one, does their best, it is expected, to get a ribbon.

Competition, 1,2,3,4  place is to be awarded, ALL, the participates, ‘did their best’,
Normally, 4 of them are in the color, and only one of them, did, ‘Better’, than the rest.

Yet under the, “Fairy Dust Sprinklers’ rules. (Someone said I could not use the word, ’snowflake’)
They ALL, get a ribbon, because they, ALL, did their best.

No problem, if one needs a Heart Transplant.
No need to find the best, anyone with a ribbon will do.

Surgeons don't compete for board certification.

I don't feel that everyone should get a trophy for actual competitions, like sports or project design.

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/14/18 at 15:52:39

Not the point
AGAIN
The POINT is
Under communism
YOU are expected to share the Fruits of YOUR LABOR
With everyone,
Win the race
Divide the trophy

Is it that complicated?

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by Eegore on 07/14/18 at 17:46:17

I understand the point, which is why I originally asked what was supposed to be argued against to begin with.

But to compare a competition driven activities with skill driven activities is futile.  You don't compete for the ability to learn chess, you compete at chess.

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/14/18 at 19:53:20

Really?
Your mind is so rigid you can't see the analogy between
Working to produce and having to share the Fruits of your labor
And
Winning the prize
And having to share the prize ?
Something wrong with you.

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by Eegore on 07/14/18 at 21:20:56

I see the analogy, I am giving examples of why I think its not exactly correct in the way its presented.  Saying you work hard to go to med school and everyone gets a doctorate is not accurate.

No they don’t compete, they just, 'pass'.
They are just like, Lawyers, Teachers, (and many etc’s)
They must ‘pass’ a base score to test their knowledge of the subject..
Some pass that, ’test’ with flying colors, and some pass by the skin of their teeth.

Their are, Surgeons who are so skilled,  one would think everything they did, was a miracle.
And others, that don’t know how to fix a ‘hangnail’.

Their are, Lawyers that are absolutely stellar in their work.
And their are some, that can only move a piece of paper back and forth on a desk.

Their are teachers, (and I personally Know some), that have the ability to being out the absolute best in any student.
And their are some, that can’t find their Azz with both hands.

But Hey, they ALL, got, Participation Trophies/Ribbons/Board Certification.

Just thinking, if putting a cast on a broken arm, the, ’Score’ of the “board Certification’, makes no difference.
Yet if one were to have Heart Surgery, thinking one would look to someone that had a higher score.
(Even Bernie Sanders, and his Supporters would)

Just thinking, If you need Defense, for a Major Crime, Ya pick the Paper Pusher, or the Star ?

Which Teacher, YOU, wanting to teach, YOUR, kid ?

And to a degree, we ALL do that, Ask, find out, look to experience/results, Many different ways of selecting.
A painter moves into the neighborhood, they get some business.  If they get more business, or less business, it all depends on their Skill at painting.

Yet to say: ‘Well that … is Board Certified, or has a Degree, so they know what they are doing’.
Is  WRONG. !  It is NOT, JUST, because.
The ultra-Liberals, just pass out, ‘Participation trophies/ribbons’,  because everyone is the Same !
And for some, that level of skill/qualification, is DIFFERENT, because of, …, …, …, …, …,  etc.

And nobody has been able to demonstrate why it's
Natural
Or
Reasonable
To expend efforts, mental and physical, to achieve ones best, I in order that others who are not so skilled or diligent in the pursuit of excellence can reap the rewards of your labors.

Title: Re: When someone nutshells it..
Post by Eegore on 07/15/18 at 11:38:16

Correct.  There are people who play chess well, and those that don't.

They don't compete to learn chess, they compete at chess.  So yes it is logical that if you were picking someone to play chess on your team you would choose the one that wins most.  If you want to win at chess you would play the one that wins least.

"To expend efforts, mental and physical, to achieve ones best, I in order that others who are not so skilled or diligent in the pursuit of excellence can reap the rewards of your labors. "

We do something similar in other ways, like city infrastructure, welfare, and the VA.

For the people that don’t possess your superior skill of stating the Oblivious.

Teach, Indoctrinate, at a young age, No NEED to Strive for something,
cause it’s, ‘Trophies for Everyone’.
No need to do the very best you can,
cause it’s, ‘Trophies for Everyone’.
No need to try the hardest you can for 1st place,
cause it’s, ‘Trophies for Everyone’.

But I suppose that goes with the mindset of, ‘believing’ in, ’not believing’.

Where those that Believe, in something, (other than nothing), know, that everyday, they strive to be perfect, Knowing full well they will never achieve that goal.
Yet they keep on striving for it.

Would you like to state, the, 'Context' in which that was said ?
Their may be a few, that don’t, realize.

Like when JOG said: “…It is surreal to see such a patently ignorant and willfully stupid fool…”

And YOU said: “…That’s the best thing you’ve said about Trump to date …”
Knowing full well that was a LIE,  by also saying:
“…Oh, you meant someone else *snigger*…”
Which you put in the smallest font, and the lightest  color.

I agree with this, however I do not agree that it applies to real world circumstances.  People can believe all they want, but those ribbons for all participants still won't get everyone a medical degree.
