The Clymer manual says to raise the front wheel off the ground ... then "spin the front wheel and activate the front brake lever as many times as it takes to refill the cylinder in the caliper and correctly locate the pads."

Is it necessary to raise the front wheel off the ground? I don't yet have the equipment to do this ... and the brake pad replacement instructions on this website makes no reference to raising the front wheel off the ground.

Hoping to avoid this and yet still finish the job. Open to your thoughts.

Not necessary. Just roll / push the bike and pull the brake until it bites. Ride slow and grab it a few good times to seat the pads and you are good. Just be careful not to lock it up and skid.

The advantage to raising the wheel off the ground is you can free spin the wheel after the breaks are bled to ensure that you don't have any binding. The wheel should make at least three full revolutions before stopping.
