Title: rear tire 1 - me 0
Post by springman on 05/27/18 at 18:46:04

I hate to admit this but it looks like the rear tire beat me. I wanted to remove the old rear tire, patch the tube and put the old rear tire on again while I await my new tube for my new tire. I was able to break the bead but with the tire irons from Harbor Freight and no rim guards it looks like I was starting to damage the rim. I tried putting a leather glove in between as protection for the rim but it just got in the way. It was 100 degrees out there with around 100% humidity and I finally just gave up. I guess I will not be riding until that new tube gets in and I will pay to have it all properly installed. >:(

Did you use the new zip tie tire changing method?    Or did you just wrestle with it twice, once for each bead?

Sorry to read about that score, sounds like the Cleveland Browns.  I usually don't use the irons much when breaking the bead, I just try to squeeze down on the side wall and break it lose.  I don't use the irons (or spoons) until I've broken the bead. There are lots of ways to do it.  Some of the youtube videos are pretty good.  I did buy a couple rim protectors but mostly I just use some plastic cut from a laundry detergent bottle or something like that usually does the job.  Seems like heavy leather should also work, like from an old belt.
A hundred degrees and high humidity, that would drive me indoors for sure.  Get a cold one out of the fridge and watch a few of those guys on youtube changing tires.  You might change your mind and want to go at it again tomorrow.

Fairly recently I removed a tire. That was enough for me, I took it to a dealer to have it put back on and I am not likely to ever do my own tire changes again. It really is a lot of sweaty work. :'(

Try letting it sit in the sun for a while before you start, the rubber gets more compliant if it's warmed up.  Then there is old adage, 'if you love it, lube it'  This couldn't be more true when it comes to tires.  If you don't have tire lube use soapy water liberally sprayed on both sides between the tire and the rim and find a way to keep the beads pushed into the rim on the side opposite where you start with your irons.  I usually work on with the wheel flat on the floor and put my knees on the edge closest to me to keep the beads compressed and pry on the other side.

I am not sure the Zip Tie method works on a spoked rim - I watched the YouTube video on a tubeless sport bike rim, and it appeared to work well.  I suspect the center groove is deeper - I know for sure the wheel is wider and gives more room.

I have a couple pair of irons - the thin BikeBandit pair is my favorite:
https://www.bikebandit.com/manuals-tools/motorcycle-tools/motorcycle-tire-repair/bikebandit-com-steel-tire-iron/p/47302

The BikeMaster pair is too thick and bulky:
https://www.bikebandit.com/manuals-tools/motorcycle-tools/motorcycle-tire-repair/bikemaster-8-inch-tire-irons-2-pack/p/29987

I have 4 of these rim protectors and it is the minimum number you can get by with.  I have learned to dislike these as they often fall into the tire as you are mounting the last bead....boy is it hard (impossible) to get them back out without taking the bead off again.
https://www.bikebandit.com/manuals-tools/motorcycle-tools/motorcycle-tire-repair/bikemaster-2-piece-tire-mounting-wheel-rim-protector/p/26919

I have a pair of these, I need to get another pair and start using them as they are thinner and easy to keep in place.  (Want to buy my old white set with the strings?)
https://www.bikebandit.com/manuals-tools/motorcycle-tools/motorcycle-tire-repair/motion-pro-rim-shield-ii/p/43535?rrec=true

I also lube the tire with RU-GLYDE...works better than dish soap or WD40.
https://brocksperformance.com/ru-glyde-tire-mounting-lubricant-8-oz-bottle/

Even with all this stuff, sometimes they can be a pretty tough wrestling match.  Some tires are pliable - while some are incredibly stiff.  Even after doing a few of them every year....it is still a job that can be sweaty.

Dave, I personally use the zip tie method on the Savage spoke rims.   The zip tie video examples I originally posted came from dirt bike tires.

I am at the weak edge of being strong enough to bead wrestle any more, but by using the zip tie trick it allows me to keep on doing it a little bit longer.

Plus having two of these extra long curved "good leverage" Motion Pro tire irons  .....
http://https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/HXoAAOSwIedbA8PD/s-l225.jpg

.... and a couple of the long straight ones.
http://https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/2kkAAOSwlFJazs92/s-l225.jpg

Did I ever mention Dave is quite strong?   He is, really.   Proof is his preference for tiny short tire irons that require much muscle instead of the good leverage they don't have.

;)     Old fat guys like me need all the zip tie tricks and extra leverage that they can find to replace the muscle mass they no longer have ......

If I lived near I would come help. Its not just strength its technique that matters , something to work on helps too. I use a grease barrel with heater hose on the edge so spokes aren't scratched or damaged. Also use 2 sets  of rim protecters with 3 sets of levers ( different styles for different style rims/tires). No way to explain how cause it's different every time.

Don't forget about SOAP , it is super important to lube that tire .    The rear of the Guzzi was SO EASY using the Zip-Tie method … but it is Tubeless too .   ::)

Thanks for the pointers. I did try getting a zip tie through there but was not successful. I think the zip ties I have were just too thin. Breaking the bead was easy using a ratchet strap to attach it to the jack and just a few strokes and the bead broke. If I decide to try again I think I will need at least one more spoon. Two just does not seem to be enough. Oh well, Memorial day weekend is basically over and I did not get to ride. Cest la vie!

I'll try a front tire, but the rear is just too much. I'm old, beat up, out of shape and I don't want a real wrestling match with anything that isn't, well,  you work it out...

I have to agree with you JOG, if you are going to wrestle, you may as well enjoy it.  ;D

Stringman my last tire change I was removing a Shinko 145/85/15 and installing a 135 R 15 car tire.  Removing the Shinko was a bear, it took 2 hours of sweat and considerable cussing. I was prepared for a real job on the car tire, but it was a piece of cake. It was on in ten minutes. I eventually took it to a used tire store that had a big air compressor to seat the car tire bead. It took 135 psi. Jeff

If you have a big c clamp, I would use it to squeeze the sides together.
Next I had to roll the end of the tie wrap to get it to get thru to the other side.  I think the point just gets caught in the well.  but even then it went under the rim strip.

Post by springman on 05/30/18 at 09:27:15

I did finally get the zip ties on it but still requires too much muscle to get off the rim. I will try to go by Cycle Gear and pick up some rim protectors and then I will not be afraid to muscle it. I tried making rim protectors from a laundry jug but even with two of those on on the same spot I just cut right through them with the spoons. I think this is just one supremely stubborn tire. I have not given up yet. ;D

IF you can't get the tires bead into the well, popping the bead over the rim is about impossible.

Title: Re: rear tire 1 - me 0
Post by springman on 05/30/18 at 11:18:46

I know it is doable. I just need to protect the rim before I can get that much force into it. I really think I am almost there. Probably won't be able to go to Cycle Gear until tomorrow though.

ok. Done. The tire leaks. I must have punctured the new tube. Will order new tube and never ever try this again on a tubed tire. The effort it took, even had I been successful is just not worth it. >:( >:(

If you ever come up to my house for a group ride - we can have a lesson on tire changes.  It is a bit of a hassle - but once you have done it a few times it isn't all that bad.  Once you get the first bead mounted and install the tube - you need to inflate the tube and then release the air before you mount the second bead.......this allows the tube to straighten out and helps to prevent any tube pinching.

Thanks Dave. That is exactly what I was thinking I should have done. Oh well, this will be the most expensive tire I ever have on the bike. By the time it is all done, after I have it mounted with a new tube this Saturday, it will have cost me an extra $70.00 roughly. Now I cannot say it was a total loss, I did learn a few things. The main thing that I learned though is that I really do not want to do this again!!!! (OK, if there is an easier way, then maybe.) ;D

WoW

All that work and fretting just for 10,000  miles worth of tire !   If the tire lasted 50,000 miles it might be worth it … ya think ???   ::)

................................

Do ya have any idea why its so hard to get over the rim edge ?   Its not a 14" tire going on a 15" rim is it ?

One item on any new bike I get ... Must be tubeless rims !   ;)

What kind of tire was that you got  ?

Yeah, that was pretty much my 1st experience too.
But $30 + $15 + whatever for a new tire twice every year changed my mind.
I spent $100 on a no mar tire changing bar.  That made it possible for me to get a tire on w/out pinching it.

And the front tire is much easier to do.  Next time start with that whatever method you choose.

On most front tires I can lube up the tire, and get the first bead on without any tools - just hold the tire and rim upright and start pushing.  (Sure wish the tube and second bead was that easy).

I seem to get about 2 years of riding out of a set of tires.  With 3 running bikes (6 tires), that means I am mounting 3 tires a year.  I am just too cheap to pay someone else to do it - and too impatient to get it done on their schedule.  I never am anxious to do it - but I do get anxious for a new tire when the old one starts handling weird or doesn't have any tread left.

Who knows. Maybe I'll try the front tire when it is time.

The tire is on the wheel now with a new tube. $20.00 for the mounting and $27.00 for the new tube since I just bout it at the shop and not online. The tube had one tiny hole in it close to the valve stem which implies I pinched it on one of the last bites to get the tire on. Yeah, I think I could probably mount one correctly now but it sure was a lot of work.

I have to admit, I only have one bike and paying $20 every 2 years for mounting and I guess $40 every 4th year is actually ok with me.

I just replaced my rear tire.  I tried the zip tie method for the first time and had mixed results.

I thought it worked great for mounting the tire with the tube in it.  I pinched the beads together making sure not to pinch the tube before mounting the tire.  Insterted the stem and popped the whole deal on without too much drama.  I'll probably always mount my tires like this.

Not sure I would use it for dismounting and the tube was pinched between the tire bead as I pulled the tire off and I snapped a few ties.  My tube was fine, but I could have broken down the tire and pulled the tube faster without the ties.

Oh by the way, once I actually got the wheel back on the bike and thought the belt was aligned I kept getting a slight rubbing of the back sprocket against the belt guard. I fiddled with that thing for about an hour and could not figure out the rubbing as the belt sure looked straight and the measurements I took were all good. Well I finally came up with an incredible, high tech idea. I gave the belt guard a good hard smack with my palm and voila, problem resolved, no more rubbing. 8-)
