Title: Will electric welding damage delicate electronics?
Post by Big John on 05/25/18 at 21:57:42

Hi all.  I want to do some welding on my frame, but would prefer not to have to remove ignition and other electronic stuff first.  I have not been able to find anything on this topic.  Does anyone know if it is safe to use a wire feed welder with the electronic stuff still in place?  I would not like to have to replace the electronics because I damaged them by welding on the frame.   My bike is a custom 03 Savage.
All advice appreciated. :question

If you don't want to replace it, why not remove it?

electronics are in the decomp controller too... little black box above the carb.

It is pretty easy to disconnect the harness connectors when the tank is off......and you likely should have the fuel tank off when you are welding.

The electronic stuff is not grounded to the frame....so disconnecting the wire connector takes it out of the system.

Thanks guys.  I didn't know it was that quick and easy to isolate the electronics. Better safe than sorry.

I'd think about the battery too .

If it's a lead acid battery and you get sparks near the vent tube, it Can sound like a .22 went off and you can spend HOURS cleaning up.

Ask me how I know.

Removing fuel tank and disconnecting battery should do it , but I would unplug ignition and decomp modules. Then weld.
