Title: What year torque limiter  (serial number)
Post by Matchless G11 on 03/23/18 at 16:39:20

I am looking at a bike that is a 1996. I know this is about the time for the torque limiter starting to show up. Does any one know what date, month, serial number. That this begins?  It is hard to convince some one you are buying a bike from, "Hey can I pull the generator cover, dump a bunch of oil out so I can see the starter gears?" ::)

As far as I know, all '96 and later have it.

The 5speed trans came in 95 ,the torque limiter came in 96, If you feel, the need to check ,  should be able to remove the starter and reach in to feel the gear with your finger or a bent coat hanger, rather than remove the side case.

Thanks again Batman. (I never seem to get tired of saying that, too bad Adam West is gone).

The torque limiter gear is not the one that the starter shaft engages......it is the next one forward.  I doubt if your finger or a coat hanger is going to be able to reach that far forward to feel the difference.

Dave you better look again ,the starter gear engaged by the starter shaft sits well below the torque limiter gear, exposing the top half and bring it within about 1 inch of the opening for the starter. Your finger tip (or bent wire)should be able to detect a straight cut gear from one with three sets of teeth with gaps between them.

Hi Dave

You brought up a valid point, can the gear be checked from the starter hole?
Last night I pulled my starter and found you could see with difficulty the gears.
I am glad I did, I had never pulled a starter on a savage, It is just a little more difficult than my old 1975 Moto Guzzi 850T

One can just barely see one tooth of the non torque limited (pre 96) gear.

Thanks!

Batman thanks again I was not belittling you (and others) contributions.

I was thanking Dave for he got me off my lazy bottom to go and pull the starter to find out the truth.

In the same way I will thank those who told me, "It can't be done", And I said. "Oh yea!"

I am also thankful for my enemies, for without which I would not know who were really are my friends.   ; 8-)
