Title: Very strange tyre deflation issue Post by eau de sauvage on 03/11/18 at 14:42:47 Suddenly discover the bike has a completely flat front tyre. Close examination reveals no damage. Pump it up to full pressure and cannot find any leaks. All I did find was that the nut that tightens the valve to the rim was a bit loose. Not so loose that the valve had moved out of position but it was able to be undone by hand. However unless the inner tube somehow got damaged I can't see how this nut not being at full tightness could cause the tyre to have no pressure. Now it's the next morning and the tyre has *not* lost any pressure at all! Can someone make any sense of this to me? |

What was the time interval between the last time you checked the pressure and the discovery of a flat? If it was more then 30-45 days that is certainly enough time for a tire to loose air. |

Title: Re: Very strange tyre deflation issue Post by eau de sauvage on 03/11/18 at 16:32:06 I usually check the pressure every couple of weeks but I have perhaps got a little slack seeing as it's rarely more than a pound down. But this has so little pressure that I couldn't get a reading. I rode it only three days before and it rode fine, but the gf took it yesterday morning and only got to the end of the road as it was handling like a pig. It is there to hold the stem in place when mounting a tire ,after that it should be loosened .If you have a flat, the tire and tube may shift on the rim if the nut is loose the valve stem may c0ck a bit ,but if it is tight it may be ripped from the tube causing sudden and complete deflation ,and the tire may even leave the rim. |

So the nut should just be finger tight then? I see that the valve is supposed to be between 3 and 5 inch lbs. I'm guessing that over tightening could damage the o ring. Not sure if I should try and hunt down a torque tightener. Everything seems to be OK now, but I'll keep a close eye on it. I don't think that Slime screwdriver core tool will be of much use on a bike, as I don't see that it will work on a motorcycle wheel that has limited room between the rim and hub. Title: Re: Very strange tyre deflation issue Post by batman on 03/12/18 at 05:23:38 EDS, finger tight or one or two turns less, the air pressure in the tube is what holds the valve stem in place when the tire is fully inflated ,not the nut. If the tire goes flat again I'd replace the tube , the stem may have been damaged when the wife road it if she applied the brake when the tire was soft. |

I then went to inflate the tire(On my truck). The ice stuck to valve stem in the slightly open position upon inflation and I could only close it by meltiing the ice with the cunning use of a blow dryer...first post...not even about bikes... |

Title: Re: Very strange tyre deflation issue Post by batman on 03/13/18 at 18:28:23 Serowbot and Hubert ,If the valve can be screwed out, you could first jack the tire up ,and heating a short piece of metal coat hanger(torch) and inserting it in the valve stem (bent at a right angle to stop it at a depth just slightly longer than the stem), melting either ice or slime ,allowing you to inflate the tire. |
