Title: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by springman on 03/07/18 at 08:25:17

I just took a quick look at the extended weather forecast for Kerville on accuweather and in reality the month of may looks better. Take a look and see what you all think.

Middle of May does look good.

Yep, middle of May looks good. Versy, I think that you are the one that should indicate what dates work best for you as Oldfeller, Lancer and MM are all retired, Steve tends to have good freedom in choosing his vacation days and I am good for vacation then and I am only a 6 to 8 hour ride from the sisters.

Now if we can get our red-legged rider to consult his oracle.

RED Checking in here :

Both of our TX Rides have been Great ... for testing our RainSuits ... and Fun at the same time.  ;)

I like May better , I think OldFeller's "CRISTAL BALL"  works as good or better than mine .  ::)   Besides , if we get wet we can blame it on him .  ;D

............................................................

OldFeller , how does a leisurely ride to the Southern end of the Nathez trace on day one sound ... Yes , there is a free camp ground there .  ;)

Sounds good, when does it get warm enough at your house?

Versy, looks like we are all in agreement. Tell us when you want to meet up at Kerrville and we can set the date.

In May !    ;)   ???

By the last of May most folk are beginning to take their first cutting of Hay but I like to wait a couple of weeks for the ground to get hot and dry really good.   Also the last of May Fescue is in the "Dough" stage and the hay takes longer to dry.

If there is a dry spell in the middle of May wouldn't that be great ?   :)

Looking at accuweather looks like the week of may 14 is the most promising. Cool in the mornings and just a bit warm in the daytime. Looks like good riding weather.

::)

According to my Oracle :  I suspect Mr. Scarlet went to the playhouse in Kerrville TX and Spun tires next to the Guadalupe River on the 20th of May and stayed till the 26th of May , then did it again ! .

No Wait !!!  :-[  I may be on drugs and need to check my Calendar again ..

Does anybody know the way to "Dry Weather" ???

Okay, I split this off to plan.

If I remember correctly, I took snapshots of the weather calendar for awhile last time.  Will look to see what that tells us.

I cast my vote but I am fine with either week. I have not idea what lookie loo is!

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 03/08/18 at 09:27:03

When you put up a poll on a trip you provide a lookie loo vote spot for those who aren't going or else they vote for something just so they can see the poll results.   Get a couple three or four doing that and your poll is rendered useless.

Lookie Loo voting spots are useful, that way your lookie loos don't go mess up your poll results.    Plus it gives your perpetually undecided a chance to recognize what they really are ..... lookie loos.

You and Verslagen have voted, nobody else has done so as they are unsure if they are going to be going this way early into things.

Trying to prognosticate the weather two months out is a skill we have never ever accomplished here on the list.*   We do a lot better inside 2 weeks out and are fairly accurate inside a week out.

*Nobody but MM that is, and he always says "Go !!!!!"  unless he has a long track history of getting a consistent wet and cold drizzly mess on the trip in question.

Cool. I should be able to take off most any time in May. I will indicate that I intend to take a week of that month but that I just do not yet know which week.

It would be cool to meet Old.indian and if I recall correctly he has a souped up savage that he took his sweet time putting together specifically to his liking.

Anybody else? This is a really fun ride. There is ridiculously good food in the area and the cabin is relatively cheap. Other than possibly fording a stream when Neal takes us off the beaten path, the skill level required for this is not as great as for the tail of the Dragon. And come on ya'll, do you really want to hang around the tail end of a dragon when instead you could meet up with Three Twisted Sisters?!? ::)

We need to be praying for no daily rains that week.

I exchanged messages with Youzguyz on Facebook and told him when we are heading down there. He asked where everyone might want to go and I mentioned the 3 sisters and little Stonehenge. If interested in anything else please post it so Neal can be aware of it. I suspect he will try to spend at least a day with us and probably map out some routes for us.

Wild flowers might be pretty much done by the time you get here this year.

To compensate, there will be a Dirty Sister option offered for doing the Three Twisted Sisters.

Stonehenge II, Three Twisted Sisters, Alamo Springs Cafe..

I thought Austin was "up" from you, not down.  :-/

Saturday was nice.  Did a rare wander around south of town, got some wild flower pictures.  Stopped in at the PGR Meet n Greet.
Sunday got drippy and I was on Mad Hammish.  Rain gear in Thumper's saddle bags, so cut the ride short.

This is just a "heads up" for those that are going to ride the Texas Hill Country.

This ain't what you are used to.. unless you ride in crazy places like I do.
There are cattle guards.
There are tight curves.
There are cattle guards in tight curves.
There are hills.
There are curves on the hills.
There are cattle guards on the hills in the curves... and if it gets wet.. YOWZERS!!!  :o
Very few of the roads will be well paved.
And.. those poorly paved roads will have cattle guards, etc, etc.

You get the point.
Sooooo.. why tell you the obvious.

You want that front wheel to stay on the road as you go along these interesting road conditions.
Take this as a reminder to change your fork oil if you haven't in a while.   Front wheel rebound.. is not fun.

and we thank you for your suport!!  :D

Thanks Guys

I'm sure she'll be just fine .   Six months ago she found a small lump (10 x 14 mm ) and  we had it checked out.    Well , for the last six months she's been taking some kind of chemo to shrink the one we found and wipe-out any more that might be hiding anywhere else .    Now its down to less than half size and we are waiting for a surgery date .

The recovery period will only be 6 to 8 weeks , but at first it will be don't pick-up anything with the arm on that side (right)(right-handed).   I'll bet it won't be long till I'm finding Wife and Son playing on the playstation 4 ...  ;D .   and not even thinking about anything but blowing up monsters !  ;D ;D

Then I can slip off for a ride and not even be missed for a while , But I think I better leave them some meals in the freezer ready to "Heat-n-Eat"  ;)

MM, Steve will not make this ride. He is due to become a grandfather for the first time somewhere around that time so he is staying home.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 04/15/18 at 04:24:35

Honestly, I am not going to come.

I have several reasons, first being I have no fond childhood memories of Texas to come back to.   Texas was an enforced every other year trip so my Mother could go back home to see her relatives, all of whom were stuffy angry old Texan alcoholic women to me.    The trip was a ball buster, as my father didn't stop except for gas.   The trip was a hated every other year affair to all of us kids.

So, I have a long standing lingering mental "Texas block" from those childhood experiences.

Next, lingering health issues.   I am really just recovering from prostrate surgery and I have a lot of raw places and several partially destroyed male plumbing type items left over from all the somewhat drastic attempts to get my bleeding to stop.   They finally stopped the bleeding by totally cutting off the blood supply to my prostate which then died in place.   Issue to me is that cutting off the blood supply to an area isn't all that laser precise, and several other areas got reduced blood supply due to the "fixes" applied and I became limping wounded accordingly and have yet to recover completely.

Lastly,  Staph and Strep infections.   THE CLEAR #1 injunction I have right now is to STAY AWAY from hospitals, clinics and dentists offices as if I get the terrible S's it can kill me.   My heart valve site is the primary death concern, but with all the raw meat inside me there are lots of other places for staph and strep to take up root as well.

Lastly, since I began stirring around working on my house some I realize just how much weaker I have become in general.   Since any of you last saw me, my hair has gone totally white and I look very much like an sick old man.   Legs, back, general mobility has declined a good bit.    I am hoping that I can recover this lost mobility this summer.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by LANCER on 04/15/18 at 04:45:40

I feel for you Kelly, surgery itself causes all sorts issues that requires extensive recovery, and that not even counting the extra things that can be required especially if bleeding runs a mock.  And at our age it drastically saps strength.  I know, been there.
Will be praying for a good recovery for you dude.
Be at peace, GOD loves you and HE is holding you in HIS very gentle hand.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by youzguyz on 04/15/18 at 06:53:54

Oldfeller, I sure hope you recover and get your strength back.
When you do, I would like to show you a better side of Texas than "angry old Texas alcoholic women".  I promise to not take you to any honky-tonk bars... even though the big thing these days are wineries up on highway 290.  :)

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by springman on 04/15/18 at 19:45:22

Oldfeller. I am sorry to hear the you will not be riding with us in Texas. But I certainly do understand the health concerns. I hurt my shoulder this January . I went to the doctor, got an MRI. Diagnosis is partial tear of the infra and the supraspinatus. I avoided physical therapy for about 6 weeks because too much was going on at work but finally over the last few weeks started some PT and I think I have decided I will avoid surgery as my range of motion is improving and pain is declining. I hate the idea of my shoulder not being 100%. But I really do not want to undergo surgery.

I'm with Neal though. Instead of visiting the wicked aunties, you would get to visit the Twisted Sisters. Much more fun!

You'll be in my prayers Oldfeller.

Oh, I forgot, the whole schpiel about the shoulder was to say, do your PT or whatever the doctor is prescribing for you. Even though it can be painful and uncomfortable, it does pay off.

I don't even know if any of the eating establishments you know from the '70s are still in business!!!
New Braunfels is not one of my normal lunch stopping areas, so I don't know of any exceptional ones.
Do you remember specific places?  If so, I can see if they are still around... and try them out to see if they are any good still.

Hopefully we can actually do some of the roads this time that had to be missed last time due to high water, low gas and/or broken motorcycle bits and pieces!!

I got GPX files of that years routes that will probably be done again this year, but with some tweaks included.  Dirty Sister.. OH YEAH!!  Subject to my whim of the moment as I come up on a turn.   ::)

No, I don't have a GPS, but thought someone else might like them.
Let me know if you want them.   If you do, and I don't have your email address, I will ask for it on PM.

The might have been Oma's Haus.  Which is gone.

Freiheit Country Store is still there.  Good food.  Almost not in the country any more though..   You can almost see that beat up old building fighting off the modern construction and sub-divisions cropping up around it.   :'(

Mike,                                    scroll to the right and up with your browser scroll bar or with your mouse travel

Much much much prettier, but you still got scabbing that is coming off with your socks, leaving a few raw patches that are still active transmission sites.   I would guess that you got some other brown crusty patches on the other side that are still raw and active underneath.

But I would also bet you'd have some solid skin all around inside a month's time if you could just keep from pulling off the scabs when you pull your socks off.

Are you looking at the water droplets from the fresh washing  ?    Those pictures are to big for my screen to see them with out reducing my screen resolution about 10 fold from normal ... My computer only has a 17" screen !  :-?

.......................................................

Yea , the skin is thin and the top of even those short socks rubs raw places.
so
What the recipe for getting thicker skin ? .

..................................

 transmission sites.    :-?

There never were any Transmission sites ... the people I live with and cook for every day would have had a problem if there were any "Transmission Sites" .    ::)
That's kind of of like saying you might catch Cancer from somebody if you get with-in there Transmission radius ... Yea , There are all manner of illnesses out there for us to have  and  usually we're not in charge of which ones catch us.
I'm not one to kiss and tell , but , if Rubbing legs with my wife hasn't Transmissioned Cellulitis to her , then I don't think you have anything to worry about !  ;D

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 04/19/18 at 10:50:07

Mike, the active bacteria in Cellulitis is in the staph/strep family.    You never got your report from your doctor saying exactly what bacteria you had exactly, although you had requested that the testing done by him.

You are mostly over it now and obviously your wife and son never got it.   This does not mean you are not still active with it and if you have exposed raw meat you can potentially transmit it to someone else who is susceptible to it by surface contact (and this means 3rd party surfaces like toilets and shower stalls, chairs, picnic tables, etc).

Each player gets to make their own decisions based on what they have for known existing medical conditions.   And yes, I am paranoid about staph/strep infections because I have to be.

https://healthfully.com/long-staph-infection-contagious-5498100.html

Identification and Symptoms

Staph infections appear in a variety of forms and varying degrees of intensity, but the first signs usually appear in the skin as small skin punctures that look like open wounds or red, swollen sores. The drainage of pus is common, and present another risk for the spread of the infection, as the drainage can get on clothes and bed linens. The staph infection cellulitus is bright red and painful. Typical infection forms are boils, or furnacles, which are abscesses in the skin; pus-filled red blisters at the hair follicles, called folliculitis; and crusted lesions and blisters on the skin's surface, called impetigo.

Mike, if your new skin is pulling off with your socks, you are still active.   The remains of the little blisters still showing on the lower front area say you are still active.   The remnants of the little pits going down through the layers of the skin that show in both pics say you are still active.

If you go on the Texas trip, you need to keep your leg wrapped up with a sterile bandage and keep putting your anti-bacterial cremes on every morning and night.   Also, washing your clothes with other folks isn't a smart thing to be doing, either.

Mike, I understand you don't want to be contagious, and I understand that it sucks to have folks be a little afraid of you for having a "skin rash".   But, as you have seen twice now in your own lifetime it isn't just a minor skin rash, it can get nasty on you -- bad enough to put you on full disability and put a large hole in your calf the first time around that you got it.   Second time, you got off light with only 3 days in the hospital.

It also can do bad things to heart valves, even with healthy people.

::)

MM, I understand Oldfeller's concern. Your legs are looking much better though (I don't believe I have ever said anything like that about a man before! ;D).

I just received the sissy bar bag I ordered from Jafrum. It is actually bigger than I thought. I'll fill it up and give it a try soon. At least my wife won't say I look like a homeless man on a motorcycle this time. And hopefully the bag will actually stay put and I won't have to adjust it at every fuel stop.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by springman on 04/19/18 at 17:12:29

MM, I spoke with the doctor about your condition again and he asked if you have toe fungus. Apparently if you do the recurrence of cellulitis is much more probable. You may want to ask you doctor to treat that to lessen the possibility of a recurrence.

So , I'm back to where I was 14 years ago.   I hope I've not been   "Contagious" all this time !    :-?    If any of you fellers are worried then I'll sit out going on any of these adventures for a while.

My only concern is your health.  If you say you are good to go, I'll be glad to see ya again!

I also understand OFs concerns.  Battled that stuff my self.  Wife had an even worse case.

You should remain diligent with keeping the leg out of harms way, putting on your creme until it's gone (can't hurt), stuff like that.

(Note to self.. pack extra medical gloves, masks, bleach, lysol, decon suits, isolation suits) (just kidding.. but I do carry gloves in case medical care needs to be given)

The Doc give me just a prescription for three gigant tubes of Neosporin a month and I'm still working one the second tube of A&D Ointment that Versey suggested (they both feel about the same).   I've got another ointment called "Silver" , its a clear water based ointment that's an anti-botic stuff , kinda burns when it hits the skint-spots .  The Silver is one of those "Natural Healling" products ... that my neighbor recommeded.

The concept with silver and fungus is that the silver nanoparticles (maybe around 20 nanometers small) come in contact with the bacteria wall and cause it to break open thus killing the bacteria. Silver is also used in the same manner when it is embedded in the yarns of antibacterial clothing. It is also used in some newly developed technology for water filtration in third world countries.

In my day job, I sell and work with the microscopy equipment that is used to observe and measure these nanoparticles on and in yarns, cells, tissue, polymers, liquids, etc. I see a lot of cool things associated with up and coming research and technologies that our systems users are developing.

We use a "silver" ointment on the dogs/cats when they get a hot spot on their skin.  Not sure what they are or why they are called "hot spots" - but it works on the places where their fur falls out and they get flaky skin.

We get it at health food stores.

I'm getting stuff together already !   Our CMAUSA group attended a biker funeral Saturday that  turned into a 300 mile day with about 300 bikes and a Sheriff's dept escort for the last  10 miles .   I found the Guzzi is not as "Comfee" as the Savage.
In all fairness : the Savage does have some "Comfee" accessories .
Harley Wide glide seat.
Harley floorboards
Harley Sportster wide 31" handle bars
Tall gearing (front pulley)
Memphis Shield (17"wide) shield (eyeball height)
Taller/Stronger rear shocks

500 miles a day (400 of it in a 50mph zone) might make for a long , but easy day ?  ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing all you fellers and ridding the Texas Hill country again !

Would any of you be interested in attending a mission with the Patriot Guard Riders while you are here?

I understand it is not eveyone's "cup of tea", but it is something that I do when I can bust loose from work.
I don't HAVE to attend the missions, I just do so when I can.

So, if you (or some of you) want to go, I would be honored to take you.
If not all of you want to go, the rest of you can go out and get lost on your own.  :P

Most of our missions are for deceased veterans and first responders. Flag line at the funeral home and/or church, escort to the grave site, flag line for the internment ceremony.

We also do flag lines for Homes for Our Troops (and similar organizations) for ground breaking and key presentation ceremonies.

And we do flag lines and escorts for Honor Flight!
Did a "Meet and Greet" for one of those last month, and a flag line for their return home is scheduled for tomorrow.
Those older vets are really great people.  The stories they tell.. just amazing.

So this Life360 code thingy.......is anyone technical enough to make a space on this forum where we can watch you guys travel and converge - then ride around?

It might also work for other group rides, and help stragglers to find out where to find the group.

Somebody want to start a "How To" Life 360 thread? :-?

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by verslagen1 on 05/07/18 at 08:16:02

Nope, participants will be pm'd a code to plug into your phone.
IF you share that with your wife, that's your problem.
So it's by invitation only.

Other than that, it's pretty simple, download the app, create the code and send it to your friends.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 05/07/18 at 09:11:00

Versy is saying he prefers not to share the code as it may slow up his cell phone response (and  eat data plan minutes and other stuff up a lot) if there were say 50-100 people watching the trip all the time.

Plus, how many of this rowdy crew would be turning on the MPH alert nanny system just to see how often we goes a wee bit too fast (thus creating a public record of our uncivilized behavior).

He is doing what I would do, just pm the code to those involved.    They need some sort of motivation to attend the group trips if they want to experience the fun.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by springman on 05/07/18 at 10:08:32

Thanks for the explanation oldfeller. I guess I will download the app and pm the code to the trip participants probably on Saturday. Actually, I guess I better send the code by Friday as MM will be starting his trip on Saturday. I won't be taking off until Sunday morning. Google maps indicates 4-1/2 hours so it'll probably take me a good 6 to 7 hours at a leisurely pace. I will not be in a rush but definitely want to get there before dark.

It has a 7 day validity so I'm waiting to capture the weekend+

Versy, the code only opens up a 7 day check in window, once the players have joined they will stay linked up until they leave the group or the originator kills the group.

Same difference as what you are thinking, actually.   Give'm a code ahead of time and half of them will be on the trip with you and will be asking for a new code because they were all too slack about using it.  Makes no never mind, you can pop up a new code that links them up to the same group.

Springman, that password nonsense is just one of the reasons I don't use an Apple phone.   I have the best part of a thousand additional reasons on top of that  ( them little things called dollars .....   ;)  )

Another reason you don't give me a spare code is I jest might hunt the group up just to buzz through it a time or two.

I think its a Large .   The top is about worn out from flapping in the wind .   I'm using one I got from Cycle gear now and have move the Froggs model to the truck gear.

Why do you ask ?  :-    Should I bring it with me to Kerriville ?   The pants (med.) are still pretty good !  :)

I'm thumping ready for vaca.
Big push at work to get some reports ready for 2 different customers and then a major review of both when I come back.
Meanwhile the backup bike has a new tire.  No threads yet, but no tread either.  No good for rain.  So like having an umbrella at the ready...

And it looks like beast is ready too.  The replacement rectifier will get the wiring cleaned up, tape is so ratty.  The muff looks good and taking on a nice gold color.  I did drop in a new jet so I know it won't be lean.  Still looking for a 6-k needle.

I'm home. I stopped in San Antonio for a bit to say hello to my son and left there at about 10:50 am. I got home at 1:25 pm. Yep, I went a little faster than I wanted to but those 18 wheelers force you to go faster.

Rear tire is pretty much worn out and has a screw in it. Thank God I did not get a flat. The rear is a Shinko Tourmaster and if I recall correctly the Shinko 712 gave me more miles. I will probably order a 712.

We all had a great time and as always, Youzguyz was a great guide and host. We did have a bit of bad luck with one of the guys taking a bit of a spill, but I will let him tell the story.

Thanks to Neal, Michael, Michael, Michael and Charlie for making this a great week. 8-)

That was Springman on the Dirty Sister (my wife told me not to do that kind of stuff  ;D )

I did have some ruff road adventure , about 100 miles from Nathez I hit the Texas State line  ... the speed limit went to 75 mph and the road surface went to  RUFF (tar and chip) .

Very good to hear that you are feeling better.  :D

At the site, I was trying to see if anything fell off your bike.  I found a lot of pieces.. but they belonged to other bikes.  Obviously a favorite place to stop and contemplate the meaning of traction.

Asked many times if someone should go get the truck and haul you and the bike back to go camp.  "Nah.. I'm OK"  You got a funny idea of what "OK" means!!!  :o

Just so you people know, this guy finished the Three Twisted Sisters loop, then rode all the way back to camp.  About 150 miles total.
I will say that he declined to ride the Dirty Sister.. a wise decision.

I sure hope you come by again.  Had a great time and would enjoy showing you some more of my stomping grounds!!

Fractured ribs... The "pain" is caused by muscle spasms.    The doc here gave me a muscle relaxer that worked much better than the pain pills the ER in Texas gave me....       Evidently I aggravated an old shoulder injury too.   Next time I ride the sisters with youzguyz remind me to wrap myself in bubble wrap...

Sorry I threw a wet blanket on the ride for the rest of you.

So after the Texas trip , I put a new "Bigger , Beefer" spring on my kick-stand to end that stuff of the motor missing a few beats with every bump I hit.    Well , its a lot stronger that the factory spring that is 13 years old this year.
So  I pulled up into the car port and flung the side-stand with my toe  and in the same motion let the bike land on the side stand ... or ... so was the plan ... what actually happened was the side stand hit the end of its travel space and bounced back up to the ridding position .    Yea ... so to the observer it must have looked like I just pulled-up and fell over when I stopped !!!   :(  .    I normally have those palm gloves for that first contact in a fall but I'd just been to the mail box so I didn't bother with them this time   ::).   The rip in the skin is almost healed .  ;)

We all have our moments !  :-[

Guys, speaking from what happened to me on the last trip with MM and Dave I have to open up a subject that none of us likes very much -- at all.

We can't do what we used to do at the PACE we used to do it at.

I, for example, need to schedule shorter trip segments and plan for more rest at each stopover.   Last summer I was sitting at Mo's tables talking with the old white haired rider crew of 70-80 year old white headed ones and they were right blunt about it --- they connect the dots at no more than 200-300 miles per full riding day and their recovery layovers have grown to 2 days at each stop for some of them.

It is all their bodies can do.

This would be totally useless to a younger 50 something group of riders.   It offends me too, but if it is all the body will take you trying to do a bunch more is a recipe for disaster.

In the past few years I have out-ridden my body (rode to exhaustion), fell over/crashed due to shoes slipping on pavement (as the sole of a shoe came off) and I have had my left leg simply not able to support the weight of the bike due to simple fatigue.   It just didn't work right when I stopped on it and I fell over.

The issue is me, my age and my creaky leg conditions.

Can I ride with a younger rider group -- no, not really.   They all like to zip fast and run full out for longer periods than I can stand and I need more leg rest breaks than they want to take.

Painkillers are not always your friend up in the mountains.   Killing the pain with effective painkilling drugs leads you to outstripping your body even worse than before and riding far too too long before stopping.

Wife was after me to get rid of the bikes for the last few weeks now, but she has modified her position since to insist I take shorter trip segments and LAY OVER for a day to recover at each segment.   She has read up on it and guess what happens to us when we stop riding completely and sell out bikes ---- RIP in 3 years is a possibility she does not like that action much at all.

PACE yourselves better, plan shorter trip segments, do not ride with young kids or crazy older riders who can still go at it full speed for 300+ mile days.

GROUP TRIPS

The trip leader needs to BE AWARE of his riders and their conditions.

Our injury rate on trips due to fatigue and various body factors is on the rise as we all get older.

Pride and self-image is a force making aging riders attempt to do too too much.  I am certainly guilty of this one, big time.

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by MMRanch on 06/19/18 at 22:49:17

OK OK OK

I'll admit it !    :-X     how embarrassing

It took me 4 days of "do almost nothing" to recover from Texas this  year …

But !   It sure was fun !

…………………………………………………………

I'm thinking Cody and them Black Hills are a long way away … Three days to get there and three days back …. with 4 days ridding 300 mile days there could be easily a  4,000 mile trip …  and its bound to rain at least one of those days .   maybe taking the truck might be a good thing.

.............................

There just ain't as many Wild Hogs as there used to be ! ;D

Before a group ride event - I think it is necessary to prepare yourself for the ride and get your body ready.  I don't think it is possible to go on 200/300/500 mile rides if you haven't been working up to it.  In the same way you would prepare your body before you go on a long hike or bicycle ride or participate in any sport - you need to get your body ready.  In addition to doing frequent rides - you need to do some long rides so you can get acclimated to sitting in the seat for long periods.  It is just not possible to go from "not" riding to "endurance" riding if you don't get your body ready for it.

Saturday mornings I try and get a 2-4 hour ride in - both for mental therapy and to get my bottom used to sitting on a motorcycle for extended periods.  On one outing I rode 160 miles on the little Ninja Cafe' with the tiny seat.  I also have started to ride the little Ninja for doing errands that can be done without the need to haul big items - it gets 70 mpg and is cheaper to operate than my car......even in the 90+ temperatures last weekend I was riding the Ninja on errands.

It is also very important that you do physical exercise to keep your body, heart and muscles as young and strong as possible - staying strong is very important as you age.  If you are going to grow old - you might as well do it as gracefully as possible.  MMRanch and I are both very active on the our farms and that helps considerably - I heat my house with wood and cutting/splitting my wood supply is a good workout.

We also need to eat less food as we age and our metabolism slows down - we should not be eating like we did when we were 18. ;)

That is Dave, being graceful and not telling the world I am fat and out of shape.   But yes, it is true I am fat and out of shape.

Spending six months on a worn track between the bed and the toilet will flat do that to you.   So will having offending organs killed in place (blood supply cut off so they will wither and die).   But that was a good bit better than peeing blood for two months .....

But these are excuses.   This morning I chopped roots (pine trees vs driveway slabs cracking)  yesterday I tussled with the lawnmower as it had tossed its belts again.

Sad thing is I don't think I will ever rip the roads like I used to.    When I am totally fresh I can do OK, but that does not last for very long.

::)

Hey Old.feller. I agree that we are all getting older and suffering the consequences. Yes, we all need to pace ourselves and be careful, but I'll tell you this, even though I may be a bit younger and maybe in a bit better shape, I don't believe I will ever be able to ride as well as you do now, let alone when you were at your peak.

Enjoy life. Enjoy riding at your pace and thank God for every minute of life that he gives us.

Oldfeller:

I wasn't singling you out - we all need to establish a healthy exercise and eating routine for our senior years (It hit me hard when I just typed that, as it is hard to admit I have become a "senior citizen").

With retirement and a less active lifestyle - we are not as physically active and likely to lose strength and conditioning if we don't do something to keep our bodies fit.  A less active lifestyle and decreased metabolism also doesn't allow seniors to eat as much food as we used to.....I suppose that is why restaurants have senior portions and why senior couples often share a single order).

You have also had major surgeries and then pushed yourself too hard - too soon and tried to go on long rides before your body was ready.  The trip to Franklin, NC after your heart valve replacement was too much/too soon.....and the recent ride to Suches likely was also more than you were ready for.

All of our members need to prepare their bikes and bodies before they embark on a week long ride event.  There is a big difference between making 30 minute rides around town - and going on a 7 day ride event with 200 - 300 mile daily rides.  I have friends that ride bicycles, and before they go on the "100 mile ride events" they work up to it and do several weeks of training rides - the same thing happens for folks running 5k, 10K running events.  We have to prepare ourselves for rides that require us to ride the motorcycle 10 hours a day!

Title: Re: Twisted Sisters May 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 06/21/18 at 05:07:52

Yeah, we really don't like this subject, none of us,  but I am having to own it more and more.

Riding my riding lawnmower to cut my yard is now done in two sections, a day apart.  I wilt in the summer heat and cannot "balance the mower" on the very tilted sections very well as the legs aren't strong enough to counter-balance the mower with my body at the end of mowing once fatigue sets in.   I run the mower in motion position 3 and 4 rather than 6 and 7 like I used to.  Mowing takes a lot longer than it used to.   I am getting old.

Same issues as the motorcycle, just another venue.

I went looking in Google for a medical condition to meet the symptoms, found several interesting ones but #3 on the list was an old friend, diabetes.   I had forgotten about the neurological symptoms called "diabetic neuropathy" and had firmly put from my mind all that ugly trimming poor circulation stuff that some declining diabetics have to go through.

This forces me to reality check the whole thing.  First of all, I am already on borrowed years as my heart would have quit 2 years ago (yep, they told me surgery or you got 1-2 years left) if I hadn't had the valve replacement.   Next, I just had two major urological surgeries -- the last one that had "limiting the blood supply has potential spread implications" that went past what the doctors intended to do.   Where was that again?  Prostrate/Bladder area, and yes the spread effects area was into the crotch and groin and hips areas.

Should I be surprised my legs are weak?   Nope, should be grateful I still got what I have and ride accordingly.    Will I get better, mebbe, I hope so.

More likely answer is no, it slowly declines from here over time.

All the rest of you older folks, Please remember your body really can't do what it used to do.   You get tired and fatigued and "shite happens" when you are out riding.

Guys ,

My CMAUSA group has a median age a lot less than ours's and they ride a lot pokier than we do .

I'm talking about 30 to 50 miles between stops and no aggressive driving at all …
There are a couple of them who want the kind of adventures we do and if its OK I'll invite the lot of them to ride over to the Dragon some time.   It would be a wonder if any of them really went !  ::)

Fact is , I've talked-up the "Field of the Woods" a couple of times and a trip is being planed now , they might invite me to go with-em !  ;D

Then its only a short hop over to the real "Fun" area's !   ;D ;D ;D

I'm thinking "Start with the Sky-Way" …
